Big Bear fire restrictions hot off the press
« on: July 01, 2016, 12:48:09 PM »
Ok, so I just got the word from Greg that fire restrictions are now in place. When I get the documents I can post them in here if anyone really wants but the jist of the matter is as follows:

No fires in any yellow post any shape or form. No fires in any campgrounds unless it has an active camp host and permitted. Some campgrounds with a host are also under this restriction, so if a fire is of importance to you call beforehand would be my advice. No open fires anywhere at all other than the aforementioned permitted areas. No smoking outside of a vehicle anywhere in the forest other than the approved campsites for fires (I didn't realize this until I read the memo). No shooting anywhere other than legal hunters and/or on approved shooting sites like on our trail. These are in effect until further notice. As much as it stinks, I would please ask each one of you to please follow them and take extra care up there in the approved fire areas. It's a great area that affords many of us lots of varied off roading and great times with family and friends. I'd hate to be "That Guy" who bends the rules and has a very unfortunate mishap.

Edit: You can use lanterns/lamps/jellied fuel source lighting anywhere you are camped as they are contained flame sources. Camping stoves are fine to use as well in the forest.

FYI...Camp Chef makes a nice propane fire pit that works great for s'mores etc.

Thanks for the heads up Erik!

Huge bummer for everyone who is headed up there this weekend, especially if they checked the restrictions page more than 24 hours ago (I could swear I checked it this morning and it was still showing the message from last November. It's got the official update on it now)... Obviously it makes sense - all those ignition sources (can we say tons of idiots over 4th of July weekend?!?) combined with the hot dry weather we've experienced over the past few weeks = the right time to shut it down. But I'll bet there will be tons of folks surprised this weekend and the rangers will probably spend more time making people aware of the restrictions than actually busting people who don't care about them. It's pretty short notice for the holiday weekend crowd.

Here's the official announcement- says they were effective yesterday: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/sbnf/alerts-notices/?cid=fsbdev7_007776
