Title: Mojave Rd 04/19th & 20th, 2014
Post by: Toro on March 19, 2014, 08:54:27 PM
I will attempt to recreate as much as I can here for the upcoming Xcusion. I'm not looking forward to it but I'll work on it. I think John is doing a good job of putting it back together,  but he asked me to do this.

Head to Laughlin on Friday the 18th. Stay at hotel/camp. Hit the road early Sat the 19th. Camp Sat night along the road. Finish road on Sunday the 20th. No real wheeling, just a desert trip and camping through a historical, 120 mile, desert road.
We would be starting in Laughlin, at the AVI Casino, on the morning of the 19th and head west towards I-15. Camp at Hole in the wall, Camp Mojave or Beal Mt on Saturday night. We can take a vote but I think I'd like to end it at Afton Canyon and avoid the "Mojave River".
This is stock (running boards and mud flaps style) and family friendly.

If I don't have your cell, please PM it to me

Due to permits for large groups, this run is capped at 20 vehicles and 40 people.

If we fill up, I will start a standby list. Last year we had no cancelations and took 15 trucks through the trail. The Year before that we had about 6+ last min cancelations. We will not run a second smaller group to circumvent the permit. I'm on the hook and held responsible with the Mojave National Preserve and don't want to poke a bear.

Standby List

The AVI Casino is located at

I would like to roll out at 0830 at the latest.  Please be gassed up and ready to roll around 0800. It will take time to get a group this big going. Then we have to account for the buried phone.

Comm's
Please remember to pick up a CB. I will not be doing FRS this year. We will communicating 100% by CB. Ham radio will only be used to talk isht about those with out Ham radio's . With a group this size, Ham will be used to have solid Comm's btwn lead and tail....and god forbid, in case of emergency. There are many reasonable options available.

Opinions on CB's are like belly buttons. Everyone's got one.

points of interest

This trip destroys in cabin filters. The fine sand of the Mojave gets into everything.  Please consider changing your filter before and after the trip.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D566IG/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_gMMktb1SK8DPA
These have less pleats than the OE filter so it won't last as long...but at these prices, that's okay.

We will be hauling out ALL trash. If you have a tire carrier you might want to consider a Trasharoo.
http://trasharoo.3dcartstores.com/
These guys keep the trash out of your rig. Keeps the smell out and frees up precious cargo space.

If your running an oiled cone filter, consider running a dry pre-filter. The fine sand will get stuck to the filter and and start sucking down the MPG's even further.
 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001034E6W/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_EZMktb18JKRHK
This particular one is for 9" base and 7" top diameters. This will only alow the finest of sand to get through. Find what works for yours and give it shot. It will pay for itself on this one trip.

3lbs of Carne Asada. The good stuff (because it's $6/lbs) , Ranchera Preparada (marinated skirt steak). Please don't freeze it. The marinade destroys the meat

Harrah's Laughlin Welcomes SCCX!

Alright guys, everything is setup for the group!  Here's our custom link:

http://www.totalrewards.com/hotel-reservations?propCode=LAU&groupCode=L04SCC4

All you have to do is select April 18 for check in, number of guests(group rate is good up to 2 people, if you've got kids, pack them in a suitcase or just dont bring them to check in desk to save yourself the $10-20).  upgraded rooms are available, but be aware, the group rate is for a deluxe room which is already an upgrade from the north tower classic rooms.

For guests that prefer to phone in their reservations, they may call our Reservation Center at 877-881-5955 to secure a reservation on your group block.  Callers must use your group code to identify the group, L04SCC4.

Please note that you and your guests may make reservations in the block at group rate until 3/19/2014.  After that time, the group rate will be offered based on hotel availability only.

I would like to roll out of Grandma's as close to 0700 as possible. If all goes well, I plan on being there shortly after 0600.
If this time line is a stretch, I'm open to pushing everything back by 1hr.

It's hard to tell. Depends on how the group moves. We are covering a lot of desert miles.
If we get on the road by 10am...I'm guessing 4pm to cover the entire trip. There will be two spots where we can duck out onto highway if time gets thin.

We started at the Avi, and went to slashX 180 miles. Started at 1100 ended at 1730. We averaged about 32 mph for the trip. So round up it takes about 6 hours if you do all dirt. Quickest, one of my friend did it in 4.

The larger the group the longer it takes due to dust. We had 7 in the fast run. And we did have to back track as we lost one in the wash.

If you don't have a Ham radio, make sure you have GPS of each check point where your group decides to stop.

I will be going digital on this trip. I will be using BackCountry Navigator with maps I made on Google earth.
I have created a .KMZ (Google Earth) file in three parts of the Friday morning run.
1. 29 Palms to Goffs
2. Goffs to the 95
3. 95 to needles

I then converted them to .GPX and loaded them, individually,  into Backcountry Navigator. The app combined the trips into one trip and overlaid it onto the built in topo maps
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/04/05/je7u2ehu.jpg)
This is an over view shot but can be zoomed into amazing detail.

You can then download that area of the map to your device and navigate with in it on an off grid trip. This will only work with devices that have a true built in gps receiver. (Sorry iPhone users).
If anyone is interested in the .gpx or .kmz files I created, let me know and I wil l send them to you.
There are several files available online for the actual Mojave Road that can easily be download from the web.

The app is $10. It I s kind of pricey but I drop $10 on Harrison maps several times a year. If anyone else is using this app, I can send you the file of my setup and your system will display it. There will be no need to do anything else.

since when have iphones not had gps? ive never had an iphone but always assumed they had the same A-GPS style receivers almost all smartphones have today.  A-GPS is assisted gps, meaning it uses the internet to download the gps satellite locations for a faster gps fix, without internet they can still get a fix, but its a cold fix that can take up to 10 mins to aquire.

there is also a trial version for backcountry navigator if people are interested in trying it out, its good for 21 days so this trip is perfect for trying it out if you dont know if its worth the $10.  i use it alot for the topo maps out in borrego.

id be interested in your gpx, danny.

but its a cold fix that can take up to 10 mins to aquire.
that's kinda what I meant by a true GPS. You can't really navigate with A-GPS.

Would one need a GPS app, as apposed to using google maps with the files downloaded?
Google Maps is dependant on the Internet to work. You can Cache map images and use them while off line, but it doesn't do that as well is other apps.

Any how....here's a link to .gpx files.

I also like the topo maps you navigate with.
There are a million ways to do this, including Google Maps.
You can also load .GPX files directly into a GPS and navigate with that. I've always had troubles doing this with my Garmin but I know it's possible.
I've been using BC Nav for a bit and I like it. I'll be using it for this trip to truly stretch it's legs.
I'll also be using the GPS on a 10" Galaxy Pro.
Just sharing what I'll be using.

I will be going digital on this trip. I will be using BackCountry Navigator with maps I made on Google earth.

So did you buy an add-on from BackCountry Navigator?  I have Pro and it does not seem to want to interface to Google maps   ???

I'm getting cold feet for the Friday time warp.

But, from what it looks like there will be some opportunities to slab it if I can't handle the heat

Terry...
Fire up the App.
at the top, find the icon that looks like a few sheets of paper. Click it.
2. On the next screen, select "more map sources"
3.on that screen, the second item down will say "US : Topo Maps and Charts"....Select it.
4. The first one on the next list will be
"Cal Topo US 24k Topo Maps (recomended)....Select it.

You should now have topo maps displaying.

There will be two places you can separate and hit the highway.
The 15fwy @ Goffs and trail crosses hwy 95  between the 2nd and 3rd leg of the trip.

Look guys, I've ran Mojave several times. And you don't really need GPS, just a good Compass that can point to North.  Going in a caravan only requires the leader and tailgunner to have GPS.  Everyone else just follows and enjoys the trip.

By the way.  I just drove back from Vegas this past Friday and the weather ir a perfect 80 deg. out there.  You may also want to check out the Ivampah solar project just WEST of the 15 Fwy before the Nevada border.  3 impressive solar panel fields that heat up water pipes to 5000 deg  to produce steam.  A few birds get cooked every now and then.

A few thoughts occurred to me last night that I wanted to share:

We have enough food.  Seriously.  There is no way we're going to be able to eat all the food people are making.  The fat kid in me is exhilarated, but last year we didn't even finish all the food people made....

Breakfast Sunday morning:  Do we have dedicated peeps for this?  Are we on our own?  COFFEE.  I AM GOING TO NEED TO MOOCH COFFEE OFF SOMEONE.  WILLING TO TRADE ALMOST ANYTHING.   YES, EVEN THAT.  COFFEE IS A MUST.  Terry hooked me up last year...
Thanks again Terry! :)

Anyway....getting PUMPED!!!!!

Not really.  Just the idea of being able to prop my feet up and chill for an extended time before devoting a lot of wheel time sounds unbeatable.  Considering the amount of time we'll be driving Sat and Sun a few hours of pool time sounds great.

The AVI Casino is located at

10000 Aha Macau Pkwy,
Laughlin, NV 89029

We will meet in the parking to get together and meet and great. There is a gas station and a convenience store in the parking lot of the AVI. Ice, gas, snacks and beer will be available.
I would like to roll out at 0830 at the latest.  Please be gassed up and ready to roll around 0800. It will take time to get a group this big going. Then we have to account for the buried phone.

We are camping on Friday night at Balancing Rocks Camp (N 35 06" 07' W 114 46' 26"). This is about 12 miles after the start of Mojave Road. We plan on meeting up with the group there ready to roll. Cheers, Travis

What GhostX said.  Really great time.  Apparently the Mitchel Caverns are may be opening up this fall.  I'm thinking there needs to be a strike mission back out there for them. :)

Now... to research replacement rims and tires... :P

I also would to chime in:

Thank you Toro for all the work you did to organize this and make it again an epic event.

Some observations:
.  Price of 4 new tires and two rims?   $$$
   .  THE WHOPS?                                 PAINFULL   >:(  :'(
.  Dinner and drinks with a bunch of your friends around the campfire?   PRICELESS

Thanks again Danny.

P.S.    Mitchell Caverns?   Even a camping trip this Fall?     ;D

Another great run in the books. We had a great time. Thanks everyone for an awesome trip. A great big fire, families, kiddo's and a great group make all the difference.
2014 is in the books. We might have to make 2015 a 3 day trip.

Epic Epic Epic

I must repeat what others have already said...

There are truly great people on this board. Helpful, generous, courteous, and friendly. Everything I'm not. Hahah. Just kidding. Self-deprecation over.

Thanks to Toro for rallying the troops, herding the cats, and being the trail boss.

Can't wait for next year!

Thanks Toro for the preparation that went into getting a bunch of great folks to the trail head! Thank to all for the help in getting everyone to the end of one of the most memorable trips my family and I have ever had with the Xterra. Initially, we were a bit nervous since we didn't seem to know anybody; however we feel like we made some great friends in the short two days! Until the next Xcursion!!

Hey Guys,
I appreciate all the kind words, but it was everyone on this trip that made it so awesome.
This all started a few years ago with me wanting to do this trail,  but didn't want to do it alone. 4 rigs hooked up with me and ran the trail. Today, it's the same thing....but with only more rigs. Everyone on this trip made it what it was. Its not very often that this many strangers can camp together and still be Buds afterwards.
This year was the best year yet because all the right people joined.
