I might be down for a maybe.... providing my family and I are still living here. If they leave and it is just my lonesome I would most likely go. If they are still here and we are free that weekend then yes... its complicated
Put me down for this one please!

Just watch out if he shows up with a chainsaw!!!!! ;)

Looks like enough interest is there..let's do this.
What: Bradshaw Trail Xcursion - approx. 75 mile overland trip with one night camping in primitive wilderness. Easy to moderate terrain. Run this west to east, start just east of Indio, terminus somewhere near Blythe.
When: Saturday, February 28th and Sunday, March 1st, 2015.
Why: because it's there and it's cool.
Comms: CB radio , CH 17 and ham radio simplex 146.535
No FRS...sorry kids.
From what I have read, easily done with a stock 4x4.
Scenic, camping, family friendly, fun, etc. Very relaxed run, simple off-roading.
More specific trail information available in this book:

I've done a little preliminary research, and it appears there are no permits needed for groups >25...so, barring a record turn out (think Rattlesnake Canyon 2011), we should be good.
Weather will be cold in the evening, we will plan firewood accordingly. Daytime temps should be desert nice (60's), with just enough sun to pink up the winter skins...pack sunscreen for sure.
This trip seems similar to the annual Mojave Road run, just less in mileage and days camped. My thought is make this a simple one nighter for folks, and go from there. There are several videos on YouTube that show sections of the trail (mostly graded fire road, with a few wash runs, wash outs, and minimal rocks, stock friendly) so hit up the internets for your own visual confirmation of rig capability.
And yes Virginia, there are geocaches on the trail, so I will pick a couple for those of us who play the game, nothing too patientce trying for those of you who haven't cached in the past.
Family friendly trip for sure, so if it coincides with a Presidents Holiday or early Spring Break, bring the kid-o's.
put me and the family down as going sir!! i am your huckleberry

I bought a Garmin 60csx a few years ago with the intention of geocaching. Never went geocaching.

On a separate note, is anyone planning on getting out in that area Friday and camping? I've already got that Friday off.

Hey, I've been to that gas station by the Patton Museum before! I'd like to take a look at the museum. It wasn't open the last time I was there.
I didn't for some reason realize exactly where we were going. People coming from the 10 could spend Friday/Friday night in Joshua Tree if so desired. Enter through the back door (lol)((10 freeway side)) and camp somewhere. Coyote Flats I think is the first campsite from the 10 side.
We were thinking about ABDSP...but JTNP actually makes more sense Steve. We stayed at Black Rock Canyon off of the 62...nice facilities.
Found the Cottonwood campground, which is about 6 miles north of the South Entrance of Joshua Tree, very close to I-10 and Chiriaco Summit. First come/first served, and $10 a night: JTNP Campground Details (http://www.nationalparked.com/US/Joshua_Tree/Campgrounds.php)
I did that exact same route a few months ago. There was an abandoned green Honda Passport right off Bradshaw. Wondering if it's still sitting out there... :-\
So do I bring my Camp Chef stove or not, John?
I might even be able to bring a Mojoe Griddle (http://www.mojoegriddle.com/). If there's interest of course.
did you have anything particular in mind?
The oven is big enough to feed about 8 people maybe a bit more depending on appetites. I usually have a loaf or two of bread with butter along the side. Thanks for the generous offer on Sunday. We will bring a bunch of sausage to help out for that breakfast.
That way Christiaan can get his beauty sleep... ;D
I have so much beauty sleep saved up I get Victoria's Secret models begging me for some.... ;)
I'll be bringing beef stew with Dumplings . I can make Xtra feed about 8, I will have xtra Breakfast burritos in the morning also
Looking forward to this Run
Cheers Jay
No offense Celt but if your doing dinner no need for breakfast too. If everyone brings one item each we will still have way too much :)
I'll bring the bacon...
Put me down for secondary breakfast meat ;)

Yeah, I know!Make sure they will do 10 lbs without charging 20 lbs minimum.
There's a Uhaul place down the road a piece that will fill it for me. That's where I get my 20lb tanks filled.
Thinking about this 10lb tank (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KOLF1IQ/ref=gno_cart_title_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) from Amazon.
It appears to be the same one AT Trailers sells for $90 (http://store.adventuretrailers.com/products/10-lb.-Propane-Cylinder..html)

Pretty sure if John wanted this posted there he would have done so himself already
I wasn't sure if you wanted this to be like the fabled runs of old. I wasn't around here for those.
It was just a though. No need to be a negative Nancy. (I pictured you saying that with a scowl... if not, don't mind me!)
Sounds good, John. I wasn't sure if you wanted this to be like the fabled runs of old. I wasn't around here for those.
Hey Steve, Christiaan can comeoff as a humorless ass on line sometimes,
But face to face in person he's a warm, funny and caring ass.
So don't be such a sensitive Sally ass.
I love saying ass.

I'm in for 2X X2 - that's a quantity of two shirts at a size of XXL
I guess I could have just said "I'll take the steve c" ;D
Yeah, if it's $9 each, I'll get three Mediums.
put me down for 3 L shirts.
Thanks for checking Steve. I can buy 2 or 3 shirts if that helps get close to 36.
3 shirts: S, M, and L
If there around $9 I'll take 2 large 1 Small

I am thinking about staying in Joshua Tree on Friday night as well. Does anyone know how late they will let people into the park? I don't feel like making the 118 mile trek from my house early Saturday morning and I might not be able to leave until after I get out of work at 5:00PM. ;D

The south entrance does not have an attendant so you could just come in whenever.
When the event get's closer, we'll try to nail down a camp site spot at Cottonwood. (did we decide on that as the spot, John)
The only trouble is there aren't reservations for that campsite so first come first serve.
That is the thought Steve...arrive and camp at the southern campground of JTNP on Friday, Jan 27th.
Steve is also correct with the fact that all of the sites there are FCFS...so the earlier a few of us can arrive, and stagger some spots, the bettah.
This is the only potential snag for Friday arrivals wishing to camp together...if it is a busy campground, we might be SOL. Keeping the Karmic Camping Fingers crossed. :) :) :)
Thanks for the info Steve and John. When I camped there last time I just remember the ranger collecting money at the gate and then another fee when you camped by having you put money in an envelope and writing your camping spot # on it and placing the envelope in a collect box on the edge of the campground.
I did some research last night and came across this: http://www.nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/upload/overflow.pdf (http://www.nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/upload/overflow.pdf). So, like knightrider pointed out, there is overflow camping in BLM land right across the street from the south entrance. So, if the site is full up, at least we have a close alternative and it's free.
In JTree proper or the BLM land for camping is fine with me.
The BLM land may be good for folks trying to save a few bucks. No restroom facilities or water would be the only drawback.
True...it's only one night. Let's PIBE.
Payment for the shirts has been sent. Thanks Ghost!
Well...guiding 20+ trucks through anything related to doom sounds like a "treat."[/color]
And James and Erik, your rigs turn a trail rating from "doom" to "unicorns & rainbows..."
Based upon timing, there are a plethora of side trails/slot canyons to explore on The Bradshaw Trail.
Let's see how the group does moving on Saturday, and discuss over full stomachs and a campfire.

I would like a medium and a large if possible.
Thanks John, money sent. Terry will grab my shirts.
XXX nailed it on every account.
Thanks for all your effort, and Name tags are Gay. And Steve C is gay for liking the idea. The mere fact that you wrote 'McLovin' on your tag confirms it's function would be for humor and making fun of the people who actually put their real name on it. But mainly it's because I prefer anonymity, and I don't want folks to know what and ass I am, until they meet me and really get to know me.
Yours Truly, Jim Beam

I believe that most would write down another alias of the funny variety instead of their actual names. I find it hilarious, so as long as you don't mind the counter productivity it will create, I'm game. I'll even offer to buy the name tags, unless someone already has a bunch laying around. ;D
Sign me up for home made potato salad - feeds 10
Hey Ghost - I need to know what to bring for the potluck. My wife makes a super delicious pasta salad that everyone always raves about at gatherings, but I'm not sure it will jive with the types of food being served. Let me know what you think.
On that note, it looks like my wife won't be attending, but my younger brother will be coming along with me instead. He's really excited and I wanted to order him a shirt to enhance the fun. Any chance I can add one shirt to my order - size XL. Let me know and I'll shoot you over the payment. Just didn't want to confuse the situation too much with my previous order and now a new one.
Ladies and gents my friend and I would like to attend currently as of now we wouldn't be able to leave SoCal until 2pm . As time gets closer if there is a meet up point Saturday evening where we can meet the excursion. I put in for a request at work to get the whole day off and will find out soon , but if not wanted to get a feeler if there is a spot to meet the camp for sat night .

If I'm free on the Saturday (which will most likely be the case), I'd be able to join you guys for a day tripper. It's the dad's birthday on the 1st so I won't be staying the night.
Cool I've ran the exact same route around Thanksgiving last year so I shouldn't have any problem. I see the Passport is still there. It was originally sitting on a 50cal ammo can and some cinder blocks. We tried to salvage the ammo can but it was busted and bent up pretty bad so we shot it up on BLM land near our campground (no worries, I packed that home and trashed it) Plus at the time it had a spare tire... That site you guys stopped at for lunch looks similar to our campground. I'll check out your pin in the OP to see if it's close to where we camped.
I'll plan on tagging along for a day tripper since I haven't been on a run with you guys yet. :)
Thx Rich...GTK the Passport has been there a while. There was a blanket covering "something" in the back seat...we backed away slowly.
GPS coordinates updated and posted in blue in the OP.
Glad you stayed off Wiley's Well Road

Are we going to need jerry cans for this?
I used about a half tank of gas...we drove "at an accelerated rate" for the day, so YMMV. If you need to, carry an extra can of gas, but we had plenty of gas to get back to Chiriaco Summit once off the trail.

The drive from Chiriaco Summit to this junction took us, in one Titan Swapped swift moving vehicle. about 75 minutes. So, with the group leaving CS at 10:30am, we should make this spot about lunch time.
With "ample" parking and lots to check out here, this will work nicely.

John, can I make this incredibly complicated for you? Last minute, literally hours before the shirt order goes in?
I have shrunk... I would like to change my order from two XXL shirts, to two XL shirts.
Now here's where it get's complicated. The prices for XXL shirts are a little more than XL shirts. I have paypal'd you $21.00 so far for my old order of two XXL shirts.
My new total should be $18 for the two XL shirts.
MORE COMPLICATED! I'm going to add one size medium shirt to my order please. I will paypal you the difference.
Steve C.
Size: 2 XL
Qty: 2
Size: M
Qty: 1
Payment: $21.00 - PAID
Additional Payment: $6.00 Pending paypal transaction to Ghost
Is this ok?
Totally okay today...and I expect nothing less.
However, if this was tomorrow, you would be receiving more than the obligatory arm punch. ;)
:D That works for me.
Did the payment go through? Paypal is pretty handy.
Yes...you sent $60.00...thanks for the extra shirts.
^^^^^^^^^^THIS, is why I never do anything nice for the group ;)

Man that's one heck of a two burner stove there!
We'll see how it works! It was a Christmas present from my bro and sis.
Info can be found on the Camp Chef (http://www.campchef.com/explorer-two-burner-stove.html) site.
If for some reason you're interested in buying one, use Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Camp-Chef-Explorer-EX-60LW-2-Burner/dp/B0006VORDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423715070&sr=8-1&keywords=explorer+2+burner+stove). Much cheaper!
P.S. - the CB meme wasn't directed at you Steve...your photo just inspired me to poke fun at myself...because as you know, I hate FRS, and often push new peeps to the group to hard wire a CB before runs...but secretly really wishing they would step up to hams. :D :D :D

What is this "CB" everyone keeps talking about? Is this some sort of new mod to a vehicle that I should be made aware of?
Randy I can bring my Australian Shepard to herd you back into line . My view at harrahs right now

It stands for Children's Band, not to be confused with Boy Bands or Hair Bands, although also popular in the 70s. You can recognize a CBer by phrases like 'breaker, breaker good buddy' and 'beware of sombitch bears on Hwy 99'. They usually hang out at truck stops and have their names on their belts just in case...Does this mean my sons Ninja Turtles Walkie Talkies are not going to work for this trip
In short, it's a radio for amateurs, where as 'Amateur Ham Radios' are for professionals :-*

What kinda licensing did he have to get for those? I don't want the FCC crackin down on us, although I think if it did all fingers would somehow get pointed at the fearless leader/organizer of this trip.
Check it...

For those heading out early...
I'll be arriving at the Cottonwood Campsite sometime around 11ish (leaving San Clemente around 9)
It's first come, first serve, so I am going to do a little scouting to see if there is a clump of sites together for those camping the night before....
How many of you plan on doing that? Anyone familiar with the campsite? Any good multiple plot sites?
A head count would be a good idea to determine if we need to bogart many sites. They are big enough to hold three to four tents a piece, the limiting factor being two cars per site (from what I remember)
Anyone coming from San Diego or North County -- which drive are you taking to the trailhead? I've gotten out there every way imaginable, just curious!
FYI...for those of you that have Costco membership, a great fill up spot pre-desert for gas cans is just off of Monterey Ave/I-10 in Palm Desert.
Looks like maybe 4 sites should be adequate for Friday Steve...maybe you and Christiaan (early arrivers, thanks) could stagger/scatter some camp gear between sites until others (myself/Daphne, Jordan, Xterra Alex) arrive?
Anyone else considering a Friday arrival?
From San Diego we will be taking the 215/60/10 route. You can cut over and route the 79/371/74/10 route, but catching traffic through the twisties is always the risk there...plus catching traffic through the Palm Desert area.

Another good spot for cheap gas in the Love's Truck stop on Dillon Rd. It's the start of the incline to Chiriaco Summit. That's where I usually fill up on my way to Blythe.
I'm not on the list John. I'll be a day tripper.
I am planning on making it out Friday night as well, but won't be out there until 8PM-ish.
Celt's Wife + our monkey who is famous for raiding you camp for food will be with us.

Counting 46 for dinner...might need some more pasta...and a bigger pot. Lol... :D :D :D
Any word on getting in any range time while out there on the BLM land?
I think I'll need to bump up the sandwich count for Saturday, counting about 50. ;D Do we think we'll need anything for Friday night at Cottonwoood?

I'm thinking Friday night will be every man/woman/child for themselves. We have enough coordinating to do w/ Saturday night and we don't have a true count of who's camping Fri and when they're going to show up, so I think it's better to just fend for ourselves...
Well, I'm always hesitant on posting anything specific to an open invitation Xcursion when it comes to firearms...safety and liability etc.
This has definitely been a pro-2nd amendment group as far as I can see.
If a group of like minded individuals chooses to take a walk...

I would probably leave the lantern separate so its not tied to the cooking area or get with the modern age and buy an led lantern :)
. . . Camping is ALL about funny gas smells!
Could I please request that someone bring three loaves of nice sourdough bread, from the bakery section of your local supermarket?
Wow...good stuff up there ^^^^
Getting this pointed back to food for the trip...

These will go nicely with both spaghetti, stew, or ???
Thanks!!
Roger that.............

On this note everyone...let's practice plink n' pickup.
Please police your brass "ejectables" as a well as any targeted debris post fun.
Thank you gents.
John/GhostX
I wasn't worried about what it does to the terrain. I agree in that sense - rain = fun! I was thinking about how it impacts campfires and potlucks (you guys should know by now that I'm ALWAYS thinking about food!) :)
I'd like to reiterate this. Otherwise I'm going to be picking up your brass for reloading, no matter the caliber. Except you pea-shooters, you can keep your brass. :D
But seriously, it pains me to see discarded "targets" left on BLM land or any land for that matter. Thanks John for mentioning this.
On the nom front, is there cause for me to bring my propane BBQ? Will anyone be bringing animal protein or want to grill veggies?
Steve, I'll be bringing my sandwiches pre-made in a cooler, but if you bring the stove, that would be great: I can warm the sandwiches up and have them fresh. I can bring my own pan.
Hey look what I found. Does this look like a good map?? If so, I like it.

John I will bring a my camp table. And two bundles of wood and the camera. ;)
I can bring a table also.
I'll make sure I bring my camp table as well, it is about a 5 x 3 foot table. I will also load up as much extra room as i can with firewood...Celt, if possible, maybe I can make a trip out to your dad's place thursday during the day to grab a bundle of the wood we cut up a couple months ago...any thoughts?
I will be bringing my aluminum camp table it's about 4x3

As far as what I need for the Dutch oven, I would like a semi level piece of real estate and about three medium sized rocks, that's it. Total cooking time I need might be about 40+ minutes once I get the coals hot. If we get a big open camp spot maybe a circle the wagons routine might work well with this large of a group. Set up tents or whatever inside the circle by their truck and the fire in the center. That makes it easy for folks to find their camp spots in case they wander off to go get rid of some rented beer in the night. Easy to help keep an eye on the children and animals as well.
Steve...once our tents are set up, lets focus on the Camp Chef set up and get the pasta pot boiling and sauce simmering. My plan is to pre-cook and freeze packets of spaghetti sauce in 1G Ziploc bags, then defrost Fri/Sat and just simmer down when ready.
Whatever works, John. I'm getting pretty good at setting the Camp Chef up (4 legs and a propane connection and it's ready to go)
Point at a spot on the ground and I will get it set up.
Perfect. Seasoning the Camp Chef griddle today.
John, how many dirt miles will we be doing per day? (roughly)
I know you mentioned it previously, by my bloviating (https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=bloviating) has swelled this thread to many pages.
For the record, I'll be one firewood bringin mofo.....I'm gonna drop a few bucks on some for Friday night, and still contribute at least 2 bundles for Saturday night....
I keep looking up the weather and I think we might be in the clear for the most part....rain by 2 on Sunday
I'll be on site at Cottonwood around noon on Friday, holding down as many sites as I can.....Steve already has my number, as does John and Jordan....if anyone else is coming out and needs to get a hold of me shoot me a DM and I'll reply w/ my number so we can coordinate...
Getting pumped!!!
For Friday Cottonwood arrival, do we have a particular area of the campsite we'd like to aim for?
Otherwise, whoever get's there first, find the largest area of non-occupied sites and stake your claim!
Thanks Jay! :)
Thanks Clint! :)
Great info. Erik...we can expand the existing fire ring with a special "Dutch Oven" section.
Might be a challenge to get 20+ rigs into a circle, let's assess upon arrival.
How does this sound...arrive, rigs situated, tents/bedding set up, prolly 30-45 minutes. Delegate a fire starter during that time to get some early coal prep for everyone that needs to get ovens cooking.

Hopefully we can have dinner about set to serve with table set ups, side dish display etc. in around 90 minutes?
Alex...I know a couple folks will be bringing stoves, so a BLT warm up/pre prep won't be an issue for you. We can cover this Friday night at Cottonwood. :)
Could I please ask those that are bringing side dishes, to also pack serving utensils? Large plastic/wood serving spoons, tongs, etc.? Thank you! :)
That's a great idea but don't you need to factor in the mandatory SCCX Union beer breaks? I mean, work these guys too hard and you may very well have a mutiny on your hand and then what would happen? Dry spaghetti noodles being dipped in frozen spaghetti sauce like a popsicle.

Hope you back feels better Randy, it won't be the same with out your witty banter.
Glad we all got home safe, it was a close one for some...

Did the weather hold up for you guys overnight? It didn't rain north of Blythe until Sunday.
