John, great idea setting up a Bradshaw Trail run.  The club did the Bradshaw in March of 2007, but there aren't any pics here on the current site that go back that far.  It was great trip, with the meet spot at Chiriaco Summit, then traveling south on Red Canyon to meet up with the Bradshaw, then east.  We turned north on Gas Line Road to find a camping spot below a mining area off of Red Cloud Mine Road.  The spot was great for the large group that we had. The next morning it was back down to the Bradshaw and continuing east.  I can show you this on a map some time if you'd like.

We had a huge group in 2007, I think it was 20 or 21 Xterras and 1 FJ Cruiser.

On Gas Line Road.  That picture doesn't even show everyone, I didn't have a wide enough lens.  It seemed like everybody and their dog was there.

We even got in a night run on the Goat Path of Doom.

Looks like enough interest is there..let's do this.

What:  Bradshaw Trail Xcursion - approx. 75 mile overland trip with one night camping in primitive wilderness.  Easy to moderate terrain.  Run this west to east, start just east of Indio, terminus somewhere near Blythe.

When:  Saturday, February 28th and Sunday, March 1st, 2015.

Why:  because it's there and it's cool.

Comms:  CB radio , CH 17 and ham radio simplex 146.535

No FRS...sorry kids.

From what I have read, easily done with a stock 4x4.

Scenic, camping, family friendly, fun, etc.  Very relaxed run, simple off-roading.

More specific trail information available in this book:

California Trails - South Coast Region - Peter Massey/Jeanne Wilson/Angela Titus  pp 217-225, Trail #45 South Coast Region

Update 11/16:

Go To List:

1.  0317
2.  knightrider
3.  Celt
4.  JFanaselle +1
5.  Toro
6.  xxSVxx
7.  glamisdude72000
8.  Steve C.
9.  Pyrofox79
10. FBinSD
11.  SoCalXTerry
12.  Jayrat
13. Mastagrog
14.  Motorpig77

I've done a little preliminary research, and it appears there are no permits needed for groups >25...so, barring a record turn out (think Rattlesnake Canyon 2011), we should be good.

Weather will be cold in the evening, we will plan firewood accordingly.  Daytime temps should be desert nice (60's), with just enough sun to pink up the winter skins...pack sunscreen for sure.

This trip seems similar to the annual Mojave Road run, just less in mileage and days camped.  My thought is make this a simple one nighter for folks, and go from there.  There are several videos on YouTube that show sections of the trail (mostly graded fire road, with a few wash runs, wash outs, and minimal rocks, stock friendly) so hit up the internets for your own visual confirmation of rig capability.

And yes Virginia, there are geocaches on the trail, so I will pick a couple for those of us who play the game, nothing too patientce trying for those of you who haven't cached in the past.

Family friendly trip for sure, so if it coincides with a Presidents Holiday or early Spring Break, bring the kid-o's.

GhostX... If there is room Celt's Dad wants to go now as well. He drives a Jeep so we can have lot's of fun poking fun of him. Well maybe not too much fun because he's the one directly responsible for supplying firewood.

Added Erik.

This is a no rig limit run, and all makes are welcome.

Just make sure he has a tuned CB installed so he can keep up with all the fun chatter.

Please thank him from all of us for the firewood contribution. :)

Okay folks...a little personal update on The Bradshaw Trail trip scheduled for late Feb-Mar first.

If you are interested in a little treasure hunting...that could formulate into a life long addiction passion...check out this quick vid that explains a little about the game:

VIDEO LINKY>>>What is geocaching? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YTqitVK-Ts)

Geocaching:  pronounced "geo-cashing"

Geocaching wiki:  Wiki - Geocaching (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocaching)

If you have kids...great!  They will love this excellent excuse to get outside and use multimillion dollar technology to find Tupperware in the desert!
(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Anza%20Borrego%20Cache%20Nov%202014/IMG_5398.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Anza%20Borrego%20Cache%20Nov%202014/IMG_5398.jpg.html)

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Anza%20Borrego%20Cache%20Nov%202014/IMG_5396.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Anza%20Borrego%20Cache%20Nov%202014/IMG_5396.jpg.html)

Or...like me...if you are a kid at heart and enjoy the journey to previously undiscovered places, with a little ammo can stuffed with a log book and some fun swag...plus possess a competitive spirit (yes, there is a culture of # of finds...)...then geocaching might be for you.
(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Anza%20Borrego%20Cache%20Nov%202014/IMG_5368.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Anza%20Borrego%20Cache%20Nov%202014/IMG_5368.jpg.html)

It also dovetails well with the off road spirit of getting out to desolate places and seeing cool stuff.
(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Anza%20Borrego%20Geocache%20Trip%20May%202014/IMG_4155.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Anza%20Borrego%20Geocache%20Trip%20May%202014/IMG_4155.jpg.html)

LMK if you have any questions, and as previously stated, we will cache a little on the trip so as to not upset any muggles (non-cachers) with the excitement of finding a box full of dollar store stuff in the desert.  :)
(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Anza%20Borrego%20Cache%20Nov%202014/IMG_5431.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Anza%20Borrego%20Cache%20Nov%202014/IMG_5431.jpg.html)

I bought a Garmin 60csx a few years ago with the intention of geocaching.  Never went geocaching.

I'd love to be taught by experts!

On a separate note, is anyone planning on getting out in that area Friday and camping?  I've already got that Friday off.
John, are there any places to camp near the start of the trail?

Hey, I've been to that gas station by the Patton Museum before!  I'd like to take a look at the museum.  It wasn't open the last time I was there.

I didn't for some reason realize exactly where we were going.  People coming from the 10 could spend Friday/Friday night in Joshua Tree if so desired.  Enter through the back door (lol)((10 freeway side)) and camp somewhere.  Coyote Flats I think is the first campsite from the 10 side.

We were thinking about ABDSP...but JTNP actually makes more sense Steve.  We stayed at Black Rock Canyon off of the 62...nice facilities.

Found the Cottonwood campground, which is about 6 miles north of the South Entrance of Joshua Tree, very close to I-10 and Chiriaco Summit.  First come/first served, and $10 a night:  JTNP Campground Details (http://www.nationalparked.com/US/Joshua_Tree/Campgrounds.php)

From the Twentynine palms side (top) to the bottom side (10 fwy) is FAR.  The road takes a long time because it kind of meanders along with a speed limit of probably 35mph.

My suggestion, if we wanted to stay in JTNP, would be to exit the Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway at the Cottonwood Springs exit, then enter JTNP through it's backdoor. (no ranger station at this entrance)  There are campsites pretty close to the south entrance to the park.

Cottonwood Springs Road is the exit right before Chiriaco Road if you're heading east.

I think this is going to be my plan.  Our timing doesn't appear to conflict with any major holidays and is still a bit before most spring breaks.  H

The pointy finger is the meet spot for Saturday morning.

I can bring my Camp Chef 2 burner stove. I haven't had a chance to use it yet.  My brother and sister got it for me for my "adventures" as they put it.

It's way overkill for just me and a buddy, but I don't mind bringing it for the group.  Kind of like Christiaan and his oven.

Post by: Ghost65 on January 17, 2015, 08:08:25 AM
Looking at the OP sign up list, we have at least two dozen folks attending the run.

Large, easily prepared and consumed meals are where we should probably head.

Erik, your beef stew is a great idea, how many do you thing one Dutch Oven will feed?  6?  8?

Daphne and I will bring pasta and a turkey meat sauce for a nice spaghetti feed.

If a couple more people contribute some pot luck items, we should be set.

Please bring your Camp Chef stove Steve...we rec'd a Camp Chef griddle as a wedding present, and could use the stove for food prep on Saturday night along with the flat griddle on Sunday morning.

Cool?

Think easily prepared group meals...for two dozen peeps.

Looks like we have:

Spaghetti for 10/GhostX

Beef Stew for possible 6-8/Celt

Peanut Butter Pancakes for all on Sunday/GhostX...maybe someone could bring sausage or bacon for the group breakfast...syrup, butter?

We have always ended up with mucho food, so hopefully we can pare it down a bit, as storage/travel the following day of the extra prepared food became an issue.

The oven is big enough to feed about 8 people maybe a bit more depending on appetites. I usually have a loaf or two of bread with butter along the side. Thanks for the generous offer on Sunday. We will bring a bunch of sausage to help out for that breakfast.

Cool, thanks Erik.

My plan for Sunday morning is to rise about 7-ish...make coffee, fire up Steve's stove around 7:30, and start cooking/feeding breakfast through about 8:30-ish.  Pancakes and sausage are easy/filling eats for the trail.

My goal would be to have camp broken and trail ready departure by 10am.

That way Christiaan can get his beauty sleep... ;D

John, I have no problem bringing the stove.

I do need to buy a propane tank for it.  I have the monster ones that you use on your home BBQ, but I'm thinking a 5 or 10 lb tank would be better for traveling.

I have $100 in Amazon gift cards just sitting there.. Anyone have a recommendation on propane tanks?  They seem to be pretty pricey!

Thinking about this  10lb tank (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KOLF1IQ/ref=gno_cart_title_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER) from Amazon.

It appears to be the same one AT Trailers sells for $90 (http://store.adventuretrailers.com/products/10-lb.-Propane-Cylinder..html)

I have a basket just for firewood, John!  I'll bring some extra for JTree the night before.

And an update on my propane tank and propane filling saga, my local Uhaul will fill a 10lb tank so I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the one from Amazon.  I should probably buy a splitter and reducer to run my Coleman lantern, too.  I really hate buying those 1lb green deals.

I'm sure Christiaan was just stating a one dimensional emotionless forum fact...which just happens to be true.

Looking at the early numbers (roughly 18 trucks), that is more than enough to play Moses with.

Anything much bigger, and serious radio relays as well as campsite sizes start to become issues.

Hey...if you've attended the last two Mojave Road trips...consider yourself "fabled."  ;)

Title: SCCX T-Shirt Order - PayPal Payment
Post by: Ghost65 on January 23, 2015, 09:42:30 AM
Okay folks...this post is ****ONLY for those attending the SCCX Bradshaw Trail Run****

I am working on SCCX logo'ed t-shirts for attendees of this run (optional, and handing to you saves us all shipping)

The cost of the shirts is looking like between $10-$12 a shirt, but I will have this finalized in the next 24-48 hours.

Style will be SCCX ball logo on the back and front left chest.

I repeat...only folks attending this run prepaying with a PayPal account will be able to grab a shirt.

***You will not receive a shirt without a confirmed prepayment via PayPal***

Once we have the 36 shirt minimum, I will put the order together.

PayPal is very easy to setup and send money, please use the "send as gift/family option" so no additional fees are charged.  If you have questions on PayPal, use Google, text a friend...just figure it out.

Remember...a cool SCCX shirt is in your future.

I will need your t-shirt size for the Hanes Beefy T short sleeve pre shrunk 100% cotton variety.  S through 2XL.

Reply in this thread with a size and quantity of shirts.

The color of the shirts will be fatigue green...please don't ask for another color...this is it.

Turn time is 2 weeks, so final order date with a few days cushion is 2/10/2015

If this message is too curt for some...well it's just business, and I prepaid for $110 in pizza at a mod day that only netted me $22 in return...let's just say SCCX is not my charity.  :) :)

Soooo, if you want a shirt, follow the directions above and heavenly cotton nirvana will be yours to shout to the world in the SCCX logo'ed language of love.

Can I buy two, John?

Will they be general round logo or will they include Bradshaw Trail on them somewhere?

Steve...you may order as many tees/sizes as possible.  ;D ;D ;D

These will be the standard SCCX logo, no Bradshaw denotation.

I might have some Bradshaw stickers made...not sure if I'll have time...but I hope to.

Well...not really...at that price.  Having done a fair amount of research whilst organizing goneMOAB, this vendor was very reliable and the quality of the shirts was great.

The price includes art set up, screening, and shipping.  Cost of each shirt is $8, plus $1 for shipping costs.

With that new minimum we can get the shirts for $9 and still cover shipping to my casa.

They do offer "no minimum" quantity shirts, but they're pretty spendy.

Black

I thought maybe the 5 colors was the problem, but even nixing the black print on a black shirt and white print on a white shirt, they're still expensive

9 x 36 = $324, shipped to my door.  The t-shirt service to everyone at the Bradshaw Trail is free.

If someone would like to find another vendor, email artwork, and handle all of the legwork involved...please PM me and let me know.

Otherwise, I will be moving forward with Kaask designs.

Erik...and for anyone else looking for 2XL, 3XL, and 4XL...the additional cost is approx. $1.50 per shirt in those sizes.  Thanks for the support!

Still a good deal @ $10.50.  The price increase is due to the extra material in the blanks.  If this changes anyone's order, please let me know ASAP.

SCCX T-Shirt Order for 2/10/2015 - Pick Up @ Bradshaw Trail Xcursion

If you want to grab one or a few SCCX t-shirt(s) on this order and you can't attend the actual Bradshaw Trail Xcursion in person, simply PM/forum post a "shout out" to one of your buds that is attending, and have them grab your shirts.

Just let me know who to give the shirts to in a PM/forum post so I can connect the dots in the desert.

Alright guys...after a series of PM"s, and a good dose of deeply introspective social sparkler thought...

To clarify:

This is not a follow up of the previous t-shirt orders, this is new.  I know there have been a few threads dedicated to shirts that faded (pun intended) for various reasons...so apologies to those who made dead end connections.

The shirts we are ordering are not proprietary to the Bradshaw Trail Xcursion, just basic SCCX logo'ed t-shirts.

Since SCCX is not a "club" per say, one of the only requirements for getting a "sticker" in the past was simply attending an Xcursion.

This was where I was headed with the t-shirts.

Attend an Xcursion...grab a shirt.

Now I realize (social sparkler in hand, and PM memory fresh) that we have an opportunity to get some shirts out to people that have patiently waited to be, as they say, "one of the cool kids."

The original post will be modified to reflect the language that, if you wish to grab one or a few SCCX t-shirt(s) on this order and you can't attend the actual Bradshaw Trail Xcursion in person, simply PM/forum post a "shout out" to one of your buds that is attending, and have them grab your shirts.

Just let me know who to give the shirts to in a PM/forum post so I can connect the dots in the desert.

If you don't know someone who is attending, or are new to SCCX...well there are plans for a few extra shirts that will be available at other Xcursions in the future too.

Simple.

I am thinking about staying in Joshua Tree on Friday night as well. Does anyone know how late they will let people into the park? I don't feel like making the 118 mile trek from my house early Saturday morning and I might not be able to leave until after I get out of work at 5:00PM. ;D

The south entrance does not have an attendant so you could just come in whenever.

When the event get's closer, we'll try to nail down a camp site spot at Cottonwood. (did we decide on that as the spot, John)
The only trouble is there aren't reservations for that campsite so first come first serve.

I've been waiting a year for the t-shirt thread to get re-actived.  How did it this thread get hi-jacked?

Put me down for 3 shirts, 1-XXL, 2-Large.  Unfortunately I wont be at Bradshaw to pick them up.

Got your payment Tim...thanks a lot.

The t-shrit order is really coming together...thanks for all the gracious support guys.

That is the thought Steve...arrive and camp at the southern campground of JTNP on Friday, Jan 27th.

Steve is also correct with the fact that all of the sites there are FCFS...so the earlier a few of us can arrive, and stagger some spots, the bettah.

This is the only potential snag for Friday arrivals wishing to camp together...if it is a busy campground, we might be SOL.  Keeping the Karmic Camping Fingers crossed.  :) :) :)

If the campground is full, you can camp south of the 10 freeway on the same exit as jay tree, I may be able to get to the campground early to see how full it is.

Thanks for the info Steve and John. When I camped there last time I just remember the ranger collecting money at the gate and then another fee when you camped by having you put money in an envelope and writing your camping spot # on it and placing the envelope in a collect box on the edge of the campground.

I did some research last night and came across this: http://www.nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/upload/overflow.pdf (http://www.nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/upload/overflow.pdf). So, like knightrider pointed out, there is overflow camping in BLM land right across the street from the south entrance. So, if the site is full up, at least we have a close alternative and it's free.

In JTree proper or the BLM land for camping is fine with me.

The BLM land may be good for folks trying to save a few bucks.  No restroom facilities or water would be the only drawback.

Well...guiding 20+ trucks through anything related to doom sounds like a "treat."

And James and Erik, your rigs turn a trail rating from "doom" to "unicorns & rainbows..."

Based upon timing, there are a plethora of side trails/slot canyons to explore on The Bradshaw Trail.

Let's see how the group does moving on Saturday, and discuss over full stomachs and a campfire.

Okay...t-shirt update:

I spoke with my vendor via email today, and he is working on a proof of the shirts with logo's, front/back.  Hopefully have something later this week.

I put together a spread sheet to send to him with quantities/sizes, and right now we are at about 50 shirts, with a few extra I am ordering "just in case."

Thanks to everyone for their speedy payments, this has been a very smooth process so far.

As stated, the plan is to submit the order on Tuesday, February 10th, and take delivery of the shirts around the 25th before the Bradshaw trip.  I will then deliver to the meet spot of the Bradshaw Trail Xcrusion on the morning of the 28th.  I will have each order banded and labeled for pick up.

Thanks again, PM me if you have questions.

John/GhostX

How do you folks feel about name tags for this run, as we all know each other by screen names or meeting on past runs?

Would this be helpful, or "office party lame?"

John,

Thank you for undertaking all of this! From planning the "Xcursion", to the potluck list and handling the shirts, it is a lot of hard work.

I like the name tag idea, but from the vibe I am getting from this forum so far, I believe that most would write down another alias of the funny variety instead of their actual names. I find it hilarious, so as long as you don't mind the counter productivity it will create, I'm game. I'll even offer to buy the name tags, unless someone already has a bunch laying around.  ;D

XXX nailed it on every account.
Thanks for all your effort, and Name tags are Gay.  And Steve C is gay for liking the idea.  The mere fact that you wrote 'McLovin' on your tag confirms it's function would be for humor and making fun of the people who actually put their real name on it.  But mainly it's because I prefer anonymity, and I don't want folks to know what and ass I am, until they meet me and really get to know me.

Hey Ghost - I need to know what to bring for the potluck. My wife makes a super delicious pasta salad that everyone always raves about at gatherings, but I'm not sure it will jive with the types of food being served. Let me know what you think.

On that note, it looks like my wife won't be attending, but my younger brother will be coming along with me instead. He's really excited and I wanted to order him a shirt to enhance the fun. Any chance I can add one shirt to my order - size XL. Let me know and I'll shoot you over the payment. Just didn't want to confuse the situation too much with my previous order and now a new one.

No problem on the shirt Joe...order goes in next Tuesday.  One XL will be added to your order, just shoot me the PayPal when you have a chance.

Pasta salad is fine...this is a potluck after all, so no worries.

Glad to hear your brother can make it, he will have fun for sure.

Okay...Daphne and I completed a little recon of The Bradshaw Trail yesterday.

Beautiful weather, with a little breeze, highs in the high seventies.

The main goal was to find a camp spot for Saturday night, as well as get the lay of the land.   Happy to say, Mission Accomplished on both fronts.

First things first, as the trip from Chiriaco Summit through Red Canyon is the route we will take to the intersection of The Bradshaw Trail.  The road surface is mostly undulating fire road, but it also has a few surprises in store for everyone.  Not Gold Mountain first obstacle surprises, more like Sevenmile Rim in Moab surprises...a few off camber climbs, rocky climbs, and ridgeline traverses to get the blood flowing.

Definitely 4HI stock capable stuff...scenic and fun.
Airing down will be critical to your ride quality and traction loving fun.

The junction of Red Canyon trail and The Bradshaw Trail yielded some fun Eagle Mountain Rail shots...you're welcome Jay

The drive from Chiriaco Summit to this junction took us, in one Titan Swapped swift moving vehicle. about 75 minutes.  So, with the group leaving CS at 10:30am, we should make this spot about lunch time.

With "ample" parking and lots to check out here, this will work nicely.

From this point on, The Bradshaw Trail is a pretty level fire road traverse.  There are still some cool sights, and we did see several jets and smoke from ordnance being dropped south of the trail.

Old Eagle Mountain crossing...this is the last we see of the railroad, as from here it travels north of Interstate 10 to the actual Eagle Mine
(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/xterraatrailcrossing.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/xterraatrailcrossing.jpg.html)

We did come across this:
(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawpassport3.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawpassport3.jpg.html)

Looked like a fairly recent deposit, as it still had the engine and lights installed.  The plates and tags were still there, and valid through March of 2015.  We shall see if it's still there in three weeks.

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawpassport1.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawpassport1.jpg.html)

The next turn took us north, up Gas Line Road to look for campsites as suggested by Frank B.  Thanks Frank, I think we found a nice one.

Just before the campsite turn off, we spotted this cool eagle's nest:

Here is the Saturday campsite, fire ring included.

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawcampview2firering.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawcampview2firering.jpg.html)

We stopped here for lunch, it was quiet, a nice breeze, some small trees for shade, light bugs, plenty of space for 20 vehicles and flat ground for tents.

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawcampview1.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawcampview1.jpg.html)

We pounded the stakes for the ARB awning in with relative ease, so tents should be no problem.

The ground is rocky, so prepare accordingly with sleeping pads and ground cover tarps/tent footprints to protect your investments, both spinal and nylon-rip-stop related.
 ;D

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawcampview3.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/Bradshaw%20Trail%202015/bradshawcampview3.jpg.html)

I pinned this spot with my GPS, and will post coordinates in the OP so you can track if you like.

The trek up the Gas Line Road is pretty sandy, but very passable in 4HI with a stock vehicle.

The campsite is east about .25 of a mile, and nicely situated.

We watched several jets while eating lunch here, which was very cool to see our tax dollars at work.
;)

Not going to spoil the whole trail and post more pictures...well just one:

Never did see this guy, or any evidence of a "Steel Curtain," but hey, you never know.

The total mileage on the trail for the day was 73.6, and we exited The Bradshaw early, at Wiley's Well.  There was another cool item along this road, but you had to be there. #orangeisthenewblack

I used about a half tank of gas...we drove "at an accelerated rate" for the day, so YMMV.  If you need to, carry an extra can of gas, but we had plenty of gas to get back to Chiriaco Summit once off the trail.

PM me or post up your questions, looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

John/GhostX

Cool I've ran the exact same route around Thanksgiving last year so I shouldn't have any problem. I see the Passport is still there. It was originally sitting on a 50cal ammo can and some cinder blocks. We tried to salvage the ammo can but it was busted and bent up pretty bad so we shot it up on BLM land near our campground (no worries, I packed that home and trashed it) Plus at the time it had a spare tire... That site you guys stopped at for lunch looks similar to our campground. I'll check out your pin in the OP to see if it's close to where we camped.

I'll plan on tagging along for a day tripper since I haven't been on a run with you guys yet. :)

I'll be day tripping too. Otherwise it's a lot of seat time for my 4 year old. It works out well because my in-laws have a place in Blythe.

Whatever's under there seems new. That blanket was there but nothing was underneath it last time we were out there. We only touched it with a lengthy stick...

This was our campsite, a tad further than the planned trip: 33

I used about a half tank of gas...we drove "at an accelerated rate" for the day, so YMMV.  If you need to, carry an extra can of gas, but we had plenty of gas to get back to Chiriaco Summit once off the trail.

John/GhostX

I'm going to bring a few extra gallons for funzies.

Where's the adventure in that!

I'm not bringing extra gas, but I will not let Steve out of my sight, just in case ::)

BTW, will there be any shooting on this trip.  (guns, not 'the sh**') ?

I'm gonna bring 4 extra gallons in the Rotopax.

Randy...not sure on the shooting regs for where we are headed. Could you do a little research maybe?  Thank you.

Hello BT...could you please post up a some information on your Xterra in Display Case and also tell us a little about yourself in the Welcome Center?

Also, please take a look at the Xcursion guidelines so you know what to expect on your first run.

Having a working CB radio installed in your rig is a really good idea...almost a requirement for these runs.  Do you have access to a CB and antenna?

Thanks!

John/GhostX

We should be good to go. It's all BLM land out there, just avoid any private property and keep an eye out for special area signs.  As Richard said, no one will give a definate answer, just " It's OK by us, but make sure you check with every Gov.com agency that you can imagin" BS.
I'm bringing a .22 or so :P

SCCX T-Shirt Order for 2/10/2015 - Pick Up @ Bradshaw Trail Xcursion

If you want to grab one or a few SCCX t-shirt(s) on this order and you can't attend the actual Bradshaw Trail Xcursion in person, simply PM/forum post a "shout out" to one of your buds that is attending, and have them grab your shirts.

Just let me know who to give the shirts to in a PM/forum post so I can connect the dots in the desert.

The drive from Chiriaco Summit to this junction took us, in one Titan Swapped swift moving vehicle. about 75 minutes.  So, with the group leaving CS at 10:30am, we should make this spot about lunch time.

With "ample" parking and lots to check out here, this will work nicely.

John, can I make this incredibly complicated for you?  Last minute, literally hours before the shirt order goes in?

I have shrunk...  I would like to change my order from two XXL shirts, to two XL shirts.

Now here's where it get's complicated.  The prices for XXL shirts are a little more than XL shirts.  I have paypal'd you $21.00 so far for my old order of two XXL shirts.

My new total should be $18 for the two XL shirts.

MORE COMPLICATED!  I'm going to add one size medium shirt to my order please.  I will paypal you the difference.

Steve C.
Size: 2 XL
Qty:  2
Size: M

Additional Payment: $6.00 Pending paypal transaction to Ghost

Accept host mod days upon request.  Put up with the shenanigans that brings AND provide eggrolls.

Other than that, nope.  Nada.

Hey Steve...on a semi serious note, have you acquired a propane tank and test fired your stove yet?  Might be a good idea since you are providing cooking heat for upwards of two dozen hungry trail souls.

Accept/except...tomato/orange. ;)

Man that's one heck of a two burner stove there!

We'll see how it works!  It was a Christmas present from my bro and sis.

Info can be found on the Camp Chef (http://www.campchef.com/explorer-two-burner-stove.html) site.

If for some reason you're interested in buying one, use Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Camp-Chef-Explorer-EX-60LW-2-Burner/dp/B0006VORDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423715070&sr=8-1&keywords=explorer+2+burner+stove).  Much cheaper!

You clean up well...and jeez, a mere shadow of your former self.  Congrats on the healthy directional change bud.  :)

Thanks for the "test" fire, looks great.  That stove combined with our Camp Chef griddle will make some fine hot cakes and sausage on Sunday morning, as well as firing up both pots we will be bringing for the pasta and sauce.

We will bring enough pasta and sauce for everyone...just in case.

Looks like we have a great collection of sides n' stuff for Saturday dinner.

Thank you everyone for your potluck contributions!

Thank Steve for bringing your stove...much appreciated!

I'd also like to request the help of a couple of three, mid-pack, simplex/ham relay volunteers...this will be a big train kids, need a couple of conductors.

I am tired and been drinking, so yes John, I would be proud to act as the Big Ham Man.  Sounds like we have Tom, Jordan, Terry, Steve, 'Celt' (sorry can't remember name, please see 'drinking and tired' excuse) and me for sure.  I will take Tail Gunner, unless one of you has a special need to heard cats.  John will of course take point and will post the simplex frequency somewhere big.  That is all for now.
Happy V-day

It stands for Children's Band, not to be confused with Boy Bands or Hair Bands, although also popular in the 70s.  You can recognize a CBer by phrases like 'breaker, breaker good buddy' and 'beware of sombitch bears on Hwy 99'.  They usually hang out at truck stops and have their names on their belts just in case...
In short, it's a radio for amateurs, where as 'Amateur Ham Radios' are for professionals :-*

For those heading out early...

I'll be arriving at the Cottonwood Campsite sometime around 11ish (leaving San Clemente around 9)

It's first come, first serve, so I am going to do a little scouting to see if there is a clump of sites together for those camping the night before....

How many of you plan on doing that?  Anyone familiar with the campsite?  Any good multiple plot sites?

I have the day off on Friday and can get there early.

The last time I stayed there, we camped at the top left corner of the campsite.
The topography of the campsite is such that the only thing really separating you from your neighbor are desert bushes..

A head count would be a good idea to determine if we need to bogart many sites.  They are big enough to hold three to four tents a piece, the limiting factor being two cars per site  (from what I remember)

Looks like maybe 4 sites should be adequate for Friday Steve...maybe you and Christiaan (early arrivers, thanks) could stagger/scatter some camp gear between sites until others (myself/Daphne, Jordan, Xterra Alex) arrive?

Anyone else considering a Friday arrival?

Anyone coming from San Diego or North County -- which drive are you taking to the trailhead? I've gotten out there every way imaginable, just curious!

From San Diego we will be taking the 215/60/10 route.  You can cut over and route the 79/371/74/10 route, but catching traffic through the twisties is always the risk there...plus catching traffic through the Palm Desert area.

FYI...for those of you that have Costco membership, a great fill up spot pre-desert for gas cans is just off of Monterey Ave/I-10 in Palm Desert.

Another good spot for cheap gas in the Love's Truck stop on Dillon Rd. It's the start of the incline to Chiriaco Summit. That's where I usually fill up on my way to Blythe.

I'm not on the list John. I'll be a day tripper.

Since we have so many hams, we will just stagger everyone amongst the line up.  Aside from parts of Red Canyon Trail, line of sight on simplex will be no problem, with only CB relays necessary from front to back.

We can get a line up card day of at the meet spot...thanks guys.

Yeah, it's gonna be quite the feed I'm thinkin. Hopefully I can make enough to feed at least 8-10. SInce I saw there was already stew on the menu I was thinking I would make some sea food gumbo unless folks are allergic to shell fish or some such? Any word on getting in any range time while out there on the BLM land?

Well, I'm always hesitant on posting anything specific to an open invitation Xcursion when it comes to firearms...safety and liability etc.

This has definitely been a pro-2nd amendment group as far as I can see.

If a group of like minded individuals chooses to take a walk...

I'm thinking Friday night will be every man/woman/child for themselves.  We have enough coordinating to do w/ Saturday night and we don't have a true count of who's camping Fri and when they're going to show up, so I think it's better to just fend for ourselves...

So I'm definitely in for the Camp Chef stove, but I'm toying with the idea of bringing this little monster

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/913/GUV7ro.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/pdGUV7roj)

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/907/HLgbyx.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/p7HLgbyxj)

I've never used it "in the wild" just in tailgate style settings.

With my recently acquired 10# propane tank,

(http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/908/qbBM84.jpg) (https://imageshack.com/i/p8qbBM84j)

which has the traditional style BBQ size propane screw on fitting, I would like to be able to run both the Camp Chef and BBQ monster at the same time.  Heck, while I'm at it, I should probably figure out how to run a lantern off of the tank, too.

I'm trying to figure out what the different type of connection fittings are called.
Maybe SCCXers can help?

For now, I'm just calling them

Coleman 1# style (think little green tanks)
Traditional BBQ style (think your typical 20# home BBQ tank)

I need some sort of splitter.  Like this one (http://www.amazon.com/Camco-59133-Brass-Tee-ports/dp/B000NHLG6W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1424305606&sr=8-2&keywords=propane+tank+splitter)

Do you guys think that will work?

I need 1 port that connects to the traditional BBQ style tank and 3 outlets.

1 for the Camp Chef stove (Traditional BBQ)
1 for the BBQ monster (Coleman 1# style)
1 for the Coleman lantern (Coleman 1# style)

Maybe Terry can help, since he's our resident RVer now!

This will split the BBQ fitting. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007HG7VWU/ref=pd_aw_sim_auto_3?refRID=1SJ58MWWYNKR3XE1BAPR

I would probably leave the lantern separate so its not tied to the cooking area or get with the modern age and buy an led lantern :)

Judging by the menus in this thread I don't think there will be any lack of "funny gas smells" no matter how many people bring LED lanterns.

Could I please request that someone bring three loaves of nice sourdough bread, from the bakery section of your local supermarket?

These will go nicely with both spaghetti, stew, or ???

Thanks!!

Anyone else considering a Friday arrival?

I'll be there friday, probably  around 4pm...so if someone can save me a plot of land, I'd appreciate it!

Steve, I'll be bringing my sandwiches pre-made in a cooler, but if you bring the stove, that would be great: I can warm the sandwiches up and have them fresh. I can bring my own pan.

The question I'm wondering is if I should bring the perfect flame table top propane BBQ grill?

This is pretty accurate, except we will be passing the Government Pass exit, and heading on to Wiley Well Road for our exit from Bradshaw to I-10 west Terry.  Nice find, this is Paul Claxton's map from one of his Bradshaw Xcursions.

Just a few random thoughts for the group to consider...

Well gents...looking at the 10 day forecast for Blythe, CA, we have windy conditions but no rain on Saturday day/evening.

20-30 mph gusts during the day...10-20 mph in the evenings.

I wouldn't worry about rain for this trip, but wind can make for some interesting conditions.  Think about your tent stakes...if they are the stock small aluminum variety, I recommend "upgrading" to the metal stake style available at your local Big 5/Sport Chalet/Sports Authority.

Also helpful for those stakes in the rocky/sandy conditions, is a nice dead blow hammer, bright orange available at your local Harbor Freight.  Not the big guy, but the small one.  Makes quick work of tent stakes.

We all know it "loves the lotion on the skin," but seriously, think about lip balm and some basic lotion/sunscreen for the dry conditions you will be encountering.  Insert obligatory lotion joke HERE:

We may want to bump the firewood count to two bundles per attendee, as a wind driven/blown campfire can use more fuel than normal.

Steve C. - to answer your table top BBQ question, if you wish to bring it, feel free.  Just not sure it is necessary?

Thinking logistically about the campsite for Saturday night...

I'd like to make the campfire/kitchen area a centralized location...think Mojave Road.

We will take a small double track trail off of The Gas Line Road from The Bradshaw Trail to camp.

When Daphne and I scouted the location, we were thinking about 15 trucks.  25-26 trucks is a few more...there is plenty of room, if everyone remembers that you can camp away from the campfire and walk to it.

Setting up a couple of tables for food prep/serving area will be important (I have two folding aluminum tables), as well as Steve's Camp Chef for the spaghetti feed etc. shouldn't be an issue.

In my opinion, the EZ up's could be better served as extra tables for food service and preparation?  Thoughts?

Erik - what consideration do you need for your Dutch Ovens, proximity to coals of a fire/serving area?

The provided fire ring is big enough, and we can move rocks back to increase if necessary.

Could I please get a couple of volunteers for folding camp/banquet tables for food prep for the potlucks?

Maybe even three if folks have some extra packing room?

Could everyone also bring one extra bundle of wood...two for each group for the fire on Saturday night?

Thanks!

As far as what I need for the Dutch oven, I would like a semi level piece of real estate and about three medium sized rocks, that's it. Total cooking time I need might be about 40+ minutes once I get the coals hot. If we get a big open camp spot maybe a circle the wagons routine might work well with this large of a group. Set up tents or whatever inside the circle by their truck and the fire in the center. That makes it easy for folks to find their camp spots in case they wander off to go get rid of some rented beer in the night. Easy to help keep an eye on the children and animals as well.

I'll make sure I bring my camp table as well, it is about a 5 x 3 foot table.  I will also load up as much extra room as i can with firewood...Celt, if possible, maybe I can make a trip out to your dad's place thursday during the day to grab a bundle of the wood we cut up a couple months ago...any thoughts?

Sure go for it, just give me a call so I can let him know you are going after it. If you want you can always come up the night before and camp at his place then drive down with the rest of us. Either way, up to you.

Awesome.  I will let you know for sure thursday.  I would love to camp out thursday night, but kids have to be in school on Friday and girlfriend could only get half a day off.  I am going to head out to Joshua Tree Friday afternoon and hopefully will be at Cottonwood Campsite by 4pm.  Thanks!

Great info. Erik...we can expand the existing fire ring with a special "Dutch Oven" section.

Might be a challenge to get 20+ rigs into a circle, let's assess upon arrival.

How does this sound...arrive, rigs situated, tents/bedding set up, prolly 30-45 minutes.  Delegate a fire starter during that time to get some early coal prep for everyone that needs to get ovens cooking.

Steve...once our tents are set up, lets focus on the Camp Chef set up and get the pasta pot boiling and sauce simmering.  My plan is to pre-cook and freeze packets of spaghetti sauce in 1G Ziploc bags, then defrost Fri/Sat and just simmer down when ready.

Hopefully we can have dinner about set to serve with table set ups, side dish display etc. in around 90 minutes?

Alex...I know a couple folks will be bringing stoves, so a BLT warm up/pre prep won't be an issue for you.  We can cover this Friday night at Cottonwood.  :)

Could I please ask those that are bringing side dishes, to also pack serving utensils?  Large plastic/wood serving spoons, tongs, etc.?  Thank you!  :)

Whatever works, John.  I'm getting pretty good at setting the Camp Chef up (4 legs and a propane connection and it's ready to go)

Point at a spot on the ground and I will get it set up.

I think we are both guilty of that...my OCD Chief (as Randy puts it) has certainly kicked in.

Approximately 40 miles each day off road Steve...give or take.

For the record, I'll be one firewood bringin mofo.....I'm gonna drop a few bucks on some for Friday night, and still contribute at least 2 bundles for Saturday night....

I keep looking up the weather and I think we might be in the clear for the most part....rain by 2 on Sunday

I'll be on site at Cottonwood around noon on Friday, holding down as many sites as I can.....Steve already has my number, as does John and Jordan....if anyone else is coming out and needs to get a hold of me shoot me a DM and I'll reply w/ my number so we can coordinate...

Getting pumped!!!

For Friday Cottonwood arrival, do we have a particular area of the campsite we'd like to aim for?

Otherwise, whoever get's there first, find the largest area of non-occupied sites and stake your claim!

That's really more dependent on how crowded the site is and what the options are....I'm going to try to secure a central spot w/ a few surrounding so we can camp as a group, but I can't promise that's going to be the case because it's unknown how crowded it's going to be until I show up....once there, I'll try to post here a rough location, as well as shoot out a group text to those on the way...

That's a great idea but don't you need to factor in the mandatory SCCX Union beer breaks? I mean, work these guys too hard and you may very well have a mutiny on your hand and then what would happen? Dry spaghetti noodles being dipped in frozen spaghetti sauce like a popsicle.

IMHO...we prolly won't have an accurate weather picture until Thursday/Friday.

Right now, Saturday is sunny, but windy.  25-35 mph gusts.  Saturday night is clear, with gusts 10-20 mph.

Sunday has rain forecasted at a 40% chance, in the evening.  We should be off the trail no later than ??? dusk???  Prolly earlier???  Depends on how quickly 20+ trucks move with photo stops etc.

Got it John. And I'll bring my own table to prep the sandwiches on.

Just a personal checklist:
Syrup, paper towels, trash bags, homestyle BLT's for dinner on Saturday, 3 bundles of wood, table, normal camping gear

I got to thinkin that since we are going to be on simplex, maybe we should have a repeater in the area in case someone needs help and the cell phones are out. So far I have found these and will program them into my radio other than the 440, maybe a General Class can do that?

   162.4 Simplex (Coachella NOAA)
   146.025 + 107.2  (Indio)
   445.640 -  131.8  (Indio)
   447.580 -  100.0  (Indio Chiraco Summit)

For those of you coming from Orange County on the Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway (I10) (SD maybe too?) don't forget that you'll be passing right by the Cabazon outlets.

Good place for last minute stuff from Merrell (https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=merrell+cabazon) and Columbia (https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Columbia+cabazon)

I might stop by the outlets for some new hiking shoes.  My cheapos from big 5 bit the dust!

There is also an Oakley Vault (https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=oakley%20cabazon) out there.

See you guys soon!

If Christian or any others are checking, I probably won't be able to make it to the Cottonwood campground tonight. I'll meet with the normal group on Saturday morning.

Got home and got the X unloaded and gear put away. Just wanted to thank John/Ghost-X for organizing this trip and getting the T-shirts made up. It was a lot of fun for my family. I had a great time around the campfire with a lot of great food.

Can't wait for the next run .......

We had a great time everyone. We are really bummed we didn't stay the night. The campfire looked fantastic and the food seemed unbelievable.
Thanks John for putting this together and getting the t-shirts done. They are awesome.

Everyone is welcome...and it was a great group effort.

Suffice to say, a crazy "senior" driver in a Lexus narrowly completed a double pass of Jordan and us on a double yellow line/blind curve into oncoming traffic...we were traveling at 50 mph...we didn't see him until he ducked in front of us missing oncoming traffic (three cars) and my front fender by literally 6 inches.

Adrenaline surge, concern for family and friends for sure.

Best part (heavy irony...)...when we rolled up next to him a the next signal (yeah, risking six lives to make that next red light...douche bag), as I mad dogged him, the guy actually had the audacity to move his sun visor over to the drivers side window.

Then he sped off, raced through a yellow light...and hopefully didn't kill anyone else last night.

Racing through the desert, being startled by low flying F-18's camping before an oncoming storm and driving on the pavement is still the most dangerous...

Glad you're ok.

Did the weather hold up for you guys overnight? It didn't rain north of Blythe until Sunday.

Weather held until 8am...light rain through breakfast, then steady rain from camp break to air up.

Kept the dust down. ;)

F-18 fly by is standard on SCCX runs,  just before the coin flip. :)

I was really hoping for stories of soggy food, flash floods and bitter attitudes.  You guys suck for having such a good time without me.
Come on, flat tire, paint scratch, expired mayonnaise, something!  Through me a bone.
Oh well, I uncharacteristically did the SMART thing for my back, and not the FUN thing.  I won't let that happen again!
Glad y'all had a great time, as usual, and made it home safe.  See ya in Mohave ;)

Daphne and I both appreciate the kudos...but I can't emphasize enough that a great event is the sum of it's parts.

There were group contributions on food, firewood, set up/tear downs, but especially cool attitudes by the group as a whole.  I apologize for the rush to Wiley Well (Joe especially...he prolly thought we were trying to lose him...), but after two days of great food, a man needs to conduct business. (there you go Randy...deuce scrambling forum fodder  :D :D)

We also had a wonderful time seeing familiar faces, and meeting new peeps as well.  Also, experiencing some truly spectacular desert landscapes, night time skies, and enjoying some rare rain storm activity on the trail.

Thanks to everyone who made this another memorable SCCX experience.   :) :) :)

so, a funny story about my early departure

well, it was easy enough to find the power line road once i left camp....hooked a right and was on my way

since i had nobody in front/behind me, i was unsure as to what my pace should be...

so, i set out at about 30....maybe 35....had to brake for a dip or two...

then the moment when I realized why i should still wheel with others...

i was wiping dust off my radio so i could see it and wasn't paying 100% attention to the dirt road...

i hit a decent size woop....got so high my heart sank and I saw my cooler floating in the rear view mirror

came down incredibly hard....BAM!

coasted for a second...then gradually got back on the gas....killed all noise (radio/windows) to listen for possible damage...waiting for the inevitable CLANK CLANK CLANK....except, nothing

Dodged a major bullet there...

oh, and i kept going straight...even after the power lines merged with the big 5story tall towers...

saw the 10 and knew i was close....except, there was a locked gate at the end of the path with fence going what seemed like miles in both directions

after a closer inspection of the gate, i noticed that you can unravel a strand of the barbwire and release the gate without unlocking anything or plowing through it....WINNING!!!

All in all...a great experience and fun weekend!!
