I have Ol' Man Emu's coupled with 2" Calmini shackles. Together they have set the height about where I need it to be. In reality, I thought the OME's would be a little stiffer ride that they are but seem to handle the rocks easily. I've put them through their paces on some tough Moab runs, the John Bull here and a lot of desert wheeling all while carrying loads. I'm still running Bilstein 5200's which are working just fine. Eventually I will get something I can get a more downward articulation, maybe look into RadFlo's or similar. I think you will be very happy with those OME Dakkar's and you shouldn't bottom out so much now under load.

Talked to Greg at PRG and he told us what he thought would work best with our current setup and camping needs. He pointed us in the right direction on the front suspension, so we thought we'd give him a go for the rear suspension as well.
We ended up with full OME Dakar Set, Adjustable Shackles, U-Bolt Flip Kit, and some Radflo Emulsion Shocks (completely rebuildable and revalveable). He is setting the shocks to what he thinks will be the best ride for us. If we don't like it, we just send them back to be adjusted.
But the Radflo's haven't shipped yet.
Time will tell if this works best for us. I'm really hoping so!! I'm super thankful for all the advice given us and the info available to help make an "informed" decision! SCCX ROCKS!! ;D ;D

Without all the camping gear in the cargo area, Pepe got his lift back. Pepe has been looking mighty sassy lately. Then tonight, we took the RTT off (approx 160 lbs) and DAMN!!!!!! Pepe is sitting even higher!!!! And rides like a dream again. I guess that AAL isn't shot after all. >:(
Getting the suspension revamped this weekend. I hope it's all worth it and it does what we need.
Is it too much to ask to not ride like a dump truck empty and yet not be ass sagging when full? :P
I want it ALL - Overlander, Camper, Rock Crawler, and DD!! ::) ::)
Also, def want to try and get Cleghorn in before RTT goes back on...... :-*

The rear shocks were BLOWN - an accordion has more resistance than these did!
The springs and RadFlos rode niiiice on the way home. Didn't even miss the sway bar thingy ;).

And, honest question here... why the new frontrunner roof rack? If you were just running the RTT anyway, does the rack give you any extra storage? I suppose the whole front part is usable now where it wasn't with the factory rack (wet box). Or did the RTT not work right on the factor rack? Just curious.

So many questions! ;D
No measurement for enhancements has been taken. I'm not interested in this metric until it settles a bit, has the roof rack and possibly the RTT on it. The ride quality is pretty stiff at this point. Not dump trucking it, but definitely stiffer than we are use to. The evaluation will be when it's fully loaded for the Winter Mojave Run. This will be the true test to see if this is our long term solution. ::)
Original Shocks were BLOWN!! And yes, before anyone asks, the rear sway bar was removed. 8)
As for the Front Runner Rack:
If Toro offers to alter a Front Runner Rack to make it a BAD ASS LOW RIDER - it seems prudent to take him up on said awesome offer. ;D ;D
Other considerations:
- Elongated rack equals more creative storage opportunities (we found the wetbox's usefulness narrow and limited)
- able to move the RTT up a skosh for more balanced load
- RTT will sit MUCH LOWER on the altered rack than the OME rack - affording better offroading and gas mileage (it sounds good, so it must be true!!)
- the FR modular rack system makes it easy to add extra goodies - kinda like a swiss army knife!

Front Runner rack sat approx. 1/2 inch lower than OME rack. I believe Danny reduced that height by an additional 4.5 cm.

I feel like right now it just acts as a buffer between the air flowing from the compressor to the tires and might be slowing me down, since it doesn't hold much air. If I can at least hold enough air for one tire, I can let the tank refill while moving from one tire to another.

The good thing about having a spare tank is if you eventually get around to getting air lockers you won't have to leave your compressor on all the time when you want to activate them. In my opinion, even if you had a 3 gallon tank it wouldn't be enough to matter much when you are airing up 4 tires. In my opinion what matters most is the compressor itself when airing up the tires.

I put a 1.3 gal. air tank on my set-up, which is just like Pepe's. I FINALLY used it today at the Desert Rendezvous. Everything worked great! With my tank, it takes about a minute to fill the tank from 40psi to 80. That gave me plenty of time to get from tire to tire with out cycling the compressor motors, and you get a little boost when you start the next tire. A bigger tank will just make the compressors work longer, unless you're going to use the air for something else. I think that one to two gallons is perfect for tires.

OBA Update:
Well, crap......crap, crap, crap........CRAP!! OBA FAILED on "Randy's Most Excellent Run". >:(

Failure resulted from heat related hose blowery.
As a result, FiG bought/installed new, improved high temp hose and a couple of Brass Ball Check Valves.
But because we have been known to OR solo, we didn't want to risk further failures. So FiG put the OBA thru its paces on a nice warm day (well over 100 degrees) to ensure no further failures due to temperature issues. And guess what? Both air compressors DIED. I just don't think those air compressors were up to the task, nor were they capable of sustained use - especially in a hot engine compartment.
So we move forward with OBA phase 2 (aka the high percentage play) :
ARB CKMTA12 '12V' On-Board Twin High Performance Air Compressor (I think both Danny and Joe are running with this unit?)

After much discussion, we've decided to install this unit in the rear cargo (passenger panel). Reasoning: Less dust, no engine heat, no water crossing issues, better air circulation. Pretty much here, but positioned a little differently.... (this is an example, not our rig. In fact, it's Danny's rig ;))

Those are really nice compressors and I'm sure you will be thrilled with it. The only input I have is putting it inside your vehicle can get noisy when it kicks on. I'm not sure if you are running lockers or not. If you aren't it's a non-issue because your air tank won't have a draw on it and the only time you will be using it is to air up.

Yep, that's the compressor I'm running, as well as Toro and Motorpig77 (and I'm sure many more). I ended up in the same situation as you - Harbor Freight unit failed on me at the end of a trip. TWICE. Thankfully I had the replacement warranty. They replaced it the first time and I relocated it to a new spot (and installed a fan) to keep it cooler. Still failed after one tire the second time around. So I came to the same conclusion as you. HF replaced it again for me, and I threw it in the space under my cargo area as a spare/backup compressor.
My ARB twin unit is mounted inside my front bumper. As Celt alluded to, the noise inside the cabin was an issue for me, especially since we bring our 4 year old son along for a lot of runs now. If he's asleep in his car seat or if it's too hot outside and he needs to stay in the rig while we're airing up, the noise would be a major issue.
Recently, one of my two motors stopped working. I had a great experience dealing with ARB to have it repaired. They sent me the parts to do it myself instead of having to ship the compressor to them and wait for them to fix it and send it back. When I popped the rear cover off to install the new parts, I realized that one of the O-rings failed and the motor assembly was full of mud. I cleaned it out with Lecro-motive electric parts cleaner, and installed the new thermal fuse they sent me and it's working like a champ. But I did send the photos of the compromised motor back to them and asked how we should handle it. They said I could send it back now or that they're ok with me just waiting until it's a problem in the future, even if it's out of warranty at that point.

If he's asleep in his car seat or if it's too hot outside and he needs to stay in the rig while we're airing up, the noise would be a major issue.
Recently, one of my two motors stopped working. I had a great experience dealing with ARB to have it repaired. They sent me the parts to do it myself instead of having to ship the compressor to them and wait for them to fix it and send it back. When I popped the rear cover off to install the new parts, I realized that one of the O-rings failed and the motor assembly was full of mud. I cleaned it out with Lecro-motive electric parts cleaner, and installed the new thermal fuse they sent me and it's working like a champ. But I did send the photos of the compromised motor back to them and asked how we should handle it. They said I could send it back now or that they're ok with me just waiting until it's a problem in the future, even if it's out of warranty at that point.
It's hilarious we went down the same path. Obviously we didn't learn from your history.... ::) ::)
Couple of things:
1. Yes - noise would be an issue if:
a. We had kids (I think Danny runs his in the rig? How does he do it?)
b. We had air lockers (which we don't..... yet)
I figure at this point er'body will be out of the rig airing up the tires, so noise shouldn't be an issue. If we get air lockers, it'll probs scare the shyte out of us if the compressor blasts unexpectedly in the cab...... LOL :o :o
2. We did NOT get the HF warranty - so they will just have to make nice paper weights. Maybe I can use them to bang tent pegs into the hard ground.... >:D
3. MUD - how did you get mud into them? >:D >:D Seriously, mud and water are a MAJOR concern for us due to our proclivity to seek out both. Ergo, in cargo area for safe keeping.....

Great spot for the compressor. Although it's designed for it, I put it there to avoid the elements. The achillies heel in these systems are the air intakes/filters.
They need to be in fresh air and away (relocted) from road grim. If they are breathing hot air or being dunked in mud, they won't be happy.
If the compressor is located up front and/or low on the rig, perhaps relocating the inlets to the air box might be in order.
Clean fresh air, on demand.
The compressor is loud....but it's not that bad. It is heavy and will need some sort of bracket to prop it up. It draws an @$$ load of current and will need serious power line to reach the rear. I ran 2awg all the way to the rear into an agu distribution block.
Let me know if you need a hand getting this going.

Otherwise your alternator will handle the load just fine (keep engine running when filling tires). But Toro is right, you need to run heavy wire for the extra distance.

I was contemplating this but my compressor only draws half of what the ARB dual does so it wasn't as big an issue to run 4ga to the rear. I am still planning on doing a 2nd battery to power the fridge and compressor but still in the design phase of my storage/kitchen/2nd battery solution.

A ground can be run along side the positive as well, but a short ground to the body works just as well. Remember to still account for the length of the ground cable when calculating for voltage drop even if your grounding to the body.(just double the length of the positive cable)
8ga for a 30a compressor in the back of the vehicle is OK, not great but it will work, just not as well. The single ground for 2 positive leads is a big no-no, each positive needs it's own ground of equal size to the positive

1. Ran a 2nd ground in parallel (2 red, 2 black - 8ga each)
2. Ran compressor for over 15 mins in 108 degree weather
3. Checked wires for heat
No extra heat, no compressor failures! We.Are.Good.To.Go!

It's been awhile since I've posted in the Display Case, and altho this isn't an upgrade, I believe maintenance to be just as important (so there).
Today's project: Assess, clean, and repaint skid plates.....
Pre- pictures (after removing 2 inches of Soda Lake Mud/Salt):

Used this product (1 Primer, 4 Black Paint):

I only primed the really bad spots and all of Ol' Rusty. This paint is supposed to be good for up to 2000 degrees (no open flame), peel resistant, rust inhibitor, and Gas and Oil Resistant (The gas skid plate had some bad peeling and rust due to gas overflow and pluggage [that's a word right?!?!]). Paint went on really nice, except the last can, it was an a-hole.....
Final product - still wet but SO PRETTY!!!

Not gonna lie, it was a PITA. But really interesting to see the damage on them. These skid plates have been worth their weight in gold. I've considered them cheap insurance to make sure we get off the trail in working order.
If I took mine off I would probably need Thor's hammer and at least 4 or 5 guys our size to pound them back into shape so I could hopefully get them back on.
They came off pretty ugly - they are already heavy on their own, but with the extra weight of the mud...... pretty sure the neighbors heard....

So as some of you know, we now have our pup with us on trips. This has created unexpected cargo issues (since she needs space to travel safely and comfortably).
I'm using this as an opportunity to tell y'all what our thought process is for dealing with space issues and seeing if you have some clever ideas that might help ass-well.
Issue #1: We can no longer carry our water in 2 - 7 gallon containers. These were on the rear passenger seat and created a weight imbalance and possible injury to zee dog. (And one is leaking, so it's a good time to re-evaluate)). We didn't want one large container (for multiple reasons).

Why? Stackable, able to redistribute weight around cargo area, able to have one readily available for use, make a wall out of them ;) .... (those Preppers have some good ideas....)
Issue # 2: We can no longer carry around our huge Pelican Cooler. That is now the dog's seating area. The Pelican is 35 lbs empty, so it's too heavy for top of vehicle when full.
Our solution: 2 Soft shell containers - specifically these:

Issue #3 : Dog safety. We tie most things down, especially heavy stuff. But we don't want her roaming around the vehicle (during the day while traveling nor at night when sleeping - she likes to turn on the lights at night....) and we don't want anything to hit her in case of a roll-over.
Our Solution: Soft netting cage - front, rear and side. We purchased some cargo nets from Raingler to put up and create a barrier. (I'll post pics when installed).
But we are also wondering if we should tie her in somehow (in case of rollover).
Also considering moving the recovery items to the roof. One less Action packer in the cargo area..... Thinking about getting one of these FR Wolf Packs (https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/us/camping-gear/storage-bags/front-runner-wolf-pack.html)

Maybe one of those long tube water containers that I've seen mounted on the side rack? I've seen them used as showers, but you could modify it as water storage. If I remember correctly, they hold 5 gallons. That would open up space for more gear/more room.

I keep two in the X and store them along the passenger floor boards on both left and right sides. They fit perfectly with the seats folded down or up. In the Jeeps we stack them wherever is convenient, usually lashed down over the rear wheel wells. They have a ton of lash down options, stackable and are pretty rugged. I use the 3.5 gallon tanks and have a spigot (Highly recommended) which makes things much easier. When we get into camp I take one and shove it in between a tire and the wheel well and angle it slightly downward (Your clearance mileage may vary) where the top gets wedged securely holding it in place. A small bottle of Dr. Bronner's soap fits perfectly in the through hole for washing. We brought four of them for the Winter Mojave and came home with about 5.5 gallons for the three of us. The only potential issue I see is if you in below zero temps to keep them inside the X overnight to prevent freezing if they are left full. The lids are recessed so they won't easily get loosened or damaged and that carry handle makes them very easy to move around vs. a big bulky 5 gallon jug. Whoever came up with these is a genius.

Steve, they are pretty tough and not flimsy at all. I'll have a few at the desert rendezvous if you want to check them out. You might need to hike out to the north 40 to find me though as I'll be with the rest of the anti-socials.
