I have been researching the trip and the mileage to the town of Deadhorse AK via the Dalton highway.

[SIZE="5"]What is the best time to drive the Dalton Highway?[/SIZE]

June: a lot of mosquitoes, muddy and slick sections due to late breakup make it a little more challenging in May and June; long daylight is a plus already early in the season.

July: the road is drier, long daylight hours make driving easy; there are less mosquitoes by the end of July

August: less mosquitoes, it can be dry or rainy (August generally has more rainy days than July); fog in the early morning hours around Atigun Pass can be very thick be the end of August. Always check the road conditions before you drive.

September: conditions are usually pretty good until mid of September, although snow storms are possible, especially around Atigun Pass. Almost no mosquitoes anymore but it gets dark at night

October - April: winter conditions

Hey new to the board, saw this and had to chime in.  I work on the North Slope near Deadhorse, lived in Fairbanks for a year(back in Orange County now) and have driven up from CA once and down from Fairbanks twice now( twice with the Xterra and once with a Subaru).  All three times were during the winter months, so my experiences may not be too useful to you.  THE MILEPOST WAS A LIFE SAVER, especially in the dead of winter.  There's three long, long stretches between Whitehorse and Fort Nelson, though in the summer months I'm sure all the small fuel stations that are shuttered would be open.  Never driven the Dalton, but I hear it sucks. Bring spares and expect to crack/chip your windshield.  It's an amazing adventure, if I can help at all please let me know.

Man...I'd need an oil change before heading back with that mileage
