So I searched the place and didn't find anything about who has what for weapons. So I thought it would cool to see what everyone is carrying. I'll post my stuff once I have the pics of them cause what's something with out the pics?

I don't have anything yet but later I'm looking to get some kind of 12 gauge for some skeet shooting, which I'd say I'm not half bad at. :D

I'd say my 28" Remington 870 express is my favorite gun to shoot. Well... maybe not my favorite to take a single shot with, but throwing and blasting clays with that shotgun is by far the funnest activity when my friends and I go out shooting. It's the basic express model - I think I paid about $300 for it, and I upgraded it with a very nice Boyd's Gunstocks solid hardwood stock and foregrip.
-
Love the Boyd's gun stocks. Got a thumb hole laminate on my Savage .223.
My 870 is an old Wingmaster that came with nice walnut stocks.
-
I have a Boyd's thumbhole on my Marlin 795 .22 as well. Turned a $140 rifle into a super fun and accurate plinker.

One sword.

You have some sweet pieces dead pilot. I am very curious about that AR... what made you decide to go with that round vs .300blk or standard 5.56 NATO??
I will also add some pics of a couple of my toys 8)
First up is my Kimber Warrior II with Surefire X300 Ultra and VZ grips
Gotta have a sweet blue background of ammo boxes

Well there's not a that much of difference between a NATO 5.56 vs the 5.45. Sometimes it's easier to find the 5.45 round since it not nearly as popular as the 5.56. Also it's cheaper. So with all that the upper was a little cheaper for the 5.45 than a 5.56. And mainly I just wanted to be different.

Interesting. I don't really know too much about rifle cartrigdes, but I have never heard of someone using the 5.45 round. Either way, you make a very compelling argument for that round!

Thanks, I like to do a little research on the round and weapon before I buy it. I took me over a year to decide on what route to go with for my AR. And instead of buying a off the shelf one I built my own. My two baby's are my AR and Kimber.

Talk about weird rounds, I've never heard of the 5.7 x 28. Looks like a .223 short?

I don't really believe in posting pics of my "registered" firearms on Al Gore's baby...suffice to say if you visit my house "unannounced" I will welcome you with "open arms".

Yeah, one of the variants of the Remington 870 has been in my sights while researching, but I have a feeling it's gonna be slippery slope; then it'll be a rifle for long distance, then a pistol to do three-gun competitions, then I'll need a second job to fund all of it... :D

That's some time in deciding what route to go. I'd say you did some solid homework! I've been debating building an AR or waiting for a SCAR to come back in stock... it's a tough decision!

It is definitely an interesting round. It's practically a mini .223. The 5.7 round is designed to have rifle-like ballistics. If I'm not mistaken, I believe this round has the highest velocity for a pistol cartridge. For the 5.7 to really shine, it needs to be placed into perspective for what platform it was made for, which is a full auto P90 with a 50 round magazine. Very low recoil, high velocity, and with the right versions (AP versions) are devastating. As a bonus, the Secret Service uses it!

Alex, it truly is a slippery slope. One is definitely not enough!!! Before you know it, you'll be buying (or trying to buy) a new gun quarterly!

Well I am heading out for shooting/camping tonight but I think we should look into who would be interested, find a suitable date, and then find a central location. Day of shooting and grilling...
Or everyone can come to my neck of the woods to Burro Canyon. we can get a private range for $25/person and we can bbq
-
I would definitely be down for a range day! Also, Burro Canyon Shooting Range is awesome 8)
-
I'd be a fan of a range day.. As of Burro Canyon. I'm kind of on the fence, The last time I was there there were some shady people.. Saw a lot of the sideways gangster shooting and people who didn't practice any type of gun safety.. Hopefully those kind of people aren't there anymore.

This^^ is why we ONLY run a private range. We it is double the price but worth every penny. plus since we know the people up there quite well we usually have no problem getting the North 1 range which is off to the side and there isn't usually anyone on the other ranges over there.
-
And what about shooting areas like the one along our 2N02 trail, a couple miles from the top of the trail? Would that be an OK place to go to target practice some shotgun rounds?
-
The advantage of doing it up at 2N02 is that we could make a cleanup day out of it as well. We wouldn't be guaranteed the privacy, but it's a relatively quiet area normally and I'm sure we'd run any idiots out of there (as in, people doing stupid stuff that we wouldn't want to be around) if we show up with a good sized group. Especially since it's our adopted trail and we'd be cleaning the area up afterward.

:)

Plus I haven't been there.
When is this happening?
Next weekend? Is there still snow?
-
Not sure how soon everyone would be available for something like this. The next few weekends are out of the question for me. I'll be moving next weekend and will need at least a couple weekends after that to settle in and finish getting unpacked and work on some projects around the new place. Plus it is supposed to snow pretty good up there between tonight and Monday. They're predicting 10" to 12" at the resort levels, and I believe the shooting areas are pretty close to 7,000 feet. The forest service tends to closee them when there's snow, but the current conditions on the website just say "Call Big Bear Discovery Center at (909) 382-2790 for more information." You can look up the two spots online... the offical names are "arrastre shooting site 1" and "arrastre shooting site 2":
http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/sbnf/recarea/?recid=77697
http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/sbnf/null/recarea/?recid=26441&actid=106
They do tend to get shut down all summer long due to fire danger, so if we were going to plan a trip as a group, maybe we should shoot for mid-spring. Maybe a couple weekends before the Mojave Road trip, or a couple weekends after maybe?
-
Depends on how far out we plan it I may my X done for a break in run.

any chance this is do-able for a 2wd peasant like myself? I am not familiar with the trail.

I hadn't thought of that, but now that I think about it, the last trip I went to Burro Canyon, on BOTH sides of us at the rifle range, there were two groups that didn't know anything. It was pretty funny, because the range safety officer completely shit on the young kids next to us telling the owner that his AR was filthy, dry, and if he kept shooting he would ruin his gun. What did the firearm owner do? He kept shooting!!!!
The other guy next to us had some expensive looking ARs with every attachment you could think of with massive optics. The guy even had one of those benchrest (?) stands, which he locked his AR into place, so all he had to do was pull the trigger without even truly shouldering the rifle. Anyway, this guys rifles kept double feeding AND more than once fired two rounds per trigger pull...
So yes, a private range would probably be best if we ended up going there.
I have never been to 2N02 is, but it sounds like fun!
-

Yes, a 2WD stock Xterra can make it up to the shooting spots on 2N02 no problem, as long as the road isn't covered in snow or mud. 2N02 is basically a graded fire road all the way. There are a few routes that could be taken to the shooting spots, but the easiest is to head into Big Bear and hit the trail on the east of Baldwin Lake. The other common way is to head up Burns Canyon from Pioneertown. Either way is very 2WD friendly.
-
A shooting field trip sounds great.
-
Well I'm gonna have to get my shotgun sooner than later! Gun research is going into high gear :)

I think it's time to start a thread for planning this shooting clean up run

I actually reserved one of the larger private ranges at Burro a few months back for Sunday April 3rd. You are all more than welcome to join me. Bring a canopy, fold out table and chair if u have them. I believe it goes out to 100 yards, maybe longer now. They've done some renovating.
It's 2wd friendly. Hard packed sand, even on a rainy day you're fine.
