My son and I will be going on a quick trip to Cleghorn and Pilot Rock. Our plan is to hit the road by 9:00 AM. If anybody wants to join us just chime in.
-
This is the day after ModDay, a great time to try out your stuff. And a good TMR (Toro's Mohave Run) pre-run.
I'm 50% in, I'll have to check with the smarter 50% first though.
-
Meet up at 9 am at Cleghorn, or you are leaving Orange at 9am?
I'm interested, just need to confirm with the wifey. It would be my first time out there.
-
I'm supposed to headed out of town for work, but I'm not sure if it's that Sunday or Monday yet. If I'm leaving Monday, I'll be in for this run.
-
I think I can make this!
-
I "might" be able to do this.. I've got my coms all situated already. I really just need to get my radiator replaced so I don't have the trans bypassed anymore.
-

I'll be leaving Orange at 8:00, we usually meet on the West side of the freeway around 9:00. If you want to meet near the 91 and 55 to follow us up let me know.
-
yeah as far as comms are concerned what will be the requirements for this run? I have a crappy little two way walkie but I'm pretty sure that isn't going to cut it.

Ok cool. I will keep you posted as the day approaches.

We run our standard requiremetn of Cb radio's. I'm not part of the "cool" ::) crowd him a ham.
-
What/where is a good place to pick up a CB? I don't have one. I'm picking up a strap and d'ring/receiver hitch and shovel this week.
-

same boat. I posted a question in the comm thread so that may give us both some insight.

www.amazon.com. If you prefer brick and mortar, you can go to Fry's or Radio Shack, if you can find one that's still open.
A couple of popular models around here are the Uniden Pro520XL (about $50 and fits right in the center console) or the Cobra 75 WXST (about $90 and has the controls and speaker built into the handheld microphone, with one very small hide-away module for the antenna and power connections). There are a million options when it comes to antennas and mounts, and just as many opinions about which is the best to run with. Most folks in the group run a 36" or 48" fiberglass whip antenna, but some are running a metal whip which handles tree branches better. :) As far as mounts, again, a million options that range in price from $15 up to about $80 and have varying degrees of difficulty to install and use. Everything from a magnet mount with a piece of coax running in the back door, all the way up to 3-axis adjustable hatch or hood mounts. You'll find plenty of options if you browse around in the SCCX Comms section of the forum. If you don't find the info you need over there, just post up a new thread and you'll get tons of answers. :)

I would love to join but abit overwhelmed that my X is capable. Stock suspension on passenger tires...
-
Cleghorn is 2wd stock friendly. There is a fireroad that intersects with the more technical stuff throughout the trail. It would be a good first run and chance to meet people.
-

I second what Tom said, you can stay on the main road and have no issues. I'd even be willing to bet you could attempt some side chutes. The X is very capable.

Duh I can't read sometimes after looking at a computer screen all day. It's after mod day. Might join

The Sunday after this coming Sunday. April 10th.

I have a few extremely NOOB questions since this will be my first real off-road excursion with a group of fellow off-roaders.
1. Airing down, is it 100% necessary for this run? If so, how long does it take? How long does putting the air back in take? What is the ideal PSI to air-down to? I don't own a compressor, eventually I will purchase one.
2. Once off the pavement, for those of us with 4x4, when is a good time to engage it? I understand that this is 2wd friendly, but I want to use my 4x4 capabilities. I know that 4H is good up to 62mph and 4L is good up to 31mph (IIRC?) Which mode would be better for most of the trail? I experimented a bit with 4H and 4L when I drove on 2N02 in Big Bear last weekend.
3. For those of us with automatic transmissions, which gear should we be in for most of the trail?
4. What basic necessities should we have? I plan on buying a receiver hitch with a d'ring, a recovery strap and a shovel. I know there has been talk of CB's above. I do plan on bringing some snacks and waters/gatorades in a cooler. Basic first-aid stuff, etc.
-
1. Airing down is not 100% necessary for Cleghorn but it will make your ride off pavement much more comfortable and if you want to actually test your capabilities, it will dramatically improve your traction. Airing down just takes a few minutes, several guys have tire deflators such as Stauns. Or if you want to be old school you can just get a valve stem remover and a tire pressure gauge. A quality pressure gauge is a good tool to have regardless, that would be good to get from your local auto parts store today. The time it takes to air back up depends on the compressor you have and the amount you aired down. I think a lot of the guys only air down to around 20 on Cleghorn, I usually go down to 15 or 12. This is the compressor that I have http://www.amazon.com/Tuff-Stuff-Portable-Compressor-Volume/dp/B00J5OQDAS?ie=UTF8&refRID=1ENM48AHFXR7GCHEZQGZ&ref_=pd_ybh_a_20 (http://www.amazon.com/Tuff-Stuff-Portable-Compressor-Volume/dp/B00J5OQDAS?ie=UTF8&refRID=1ENM48AHFXR7GCHEZQGZ&ref_=pd_ybh_a_20) It's bulky, but it's cheap and fast. It takes me a little over 10 minutes to get my tires aired back to 35 psi.
2. You only need 4wd for the obstacles. I stay in 2wd most of the trail and change into 4H or 4L depending on the difficulty of the obstacle that I am on. You DO NOT want to cruise around in 4L all day.
3. Stay in D most of the trail. 4L L is for the most difficult obstacles, it gives you more control on hills (up and down).

Need to get some comms accomplished, very least some CB love. Might be able to swing the mod day too!
-
Everything Tom said above (excellent post) and common sense as your copilot.
Also, if you get into a uncomfortable situation call out for a spot. Outside perspectives make obstacles much more palatable.
What you feel inside vs. actual attitude of your vehicle varies greatly.
Great questions...ALWAYS better to ask and be confident in the dirt.
Finally, IME the Viair 90 is an excellent first compressor.

wow great info.. well im convinced, count me in. I have enough time to pick up a cb radio.
-
Was reading thru a "checklist' of things before going to small trip or excursions and one of them was to make sure I have both front and rear recovery points. My X didnt come with a rear hitch, i only have the factory tow hook in the front. Since I will be taking the fire road ( mostly) should I worry about not having a hitch as the rear recovery point?
-
I will see I can go. I don't mind taking the 2wd group. Just depend on when I get back from my race in SD on Saturday.
We can do some basic spotting training.

No worries for this trip. When you come out just ask and see what everyone else has. You will get a good idea of what you need where. The idea is to become self sufficient over time. This way you don't become 'That Guy' lol
-
gotcha! cool to know... all i am missing is a cb radio and im good to go.

If worse comes to worse, I can get creative with soft shackles and tow straps. ;)
-
I've been looking for a good reason to test out the new lift and tires, count me in. I don't have comms though. What's the best/cheapest route to go for this?
-
Glad you can make it. We should have a good crowd. Regarding the comms, a simple portable CB is allyou need. See the posts below.
-
Well, I'm a definite go for this. I'm not leaving for NM until late Monday morning. lol
-
Have been wanting to try Cleghorn. Hope to meet everyone there.
-
This is shaping up quite nicely!

I agree. There will be a good mix off experienced and beginner wheelers, so there will be some good trail lessons to learn for those who are new to the dirt and some bad habits to share from those of us that just fake it> ::) :D

Where are we meeting up at on Sunday? Is there a parking lot, or a staging area? I've never been out there.

As many trucks as there are going to be, we'll need to meet on the west side of the freeway. The trail pretty much begins immediately to the east when you exit. We can meet under the bridge or in the parking area west of the freeway. If you're airing down, do it there while we're waiting for everyone to show up.

You are correct. As of right now, I am closely watching the weather. I'm not real comfortable hitting this trail of there is a chance of a thunder storm and significant rain. Too many wide open spots on top for lightning with slippery narrow passes heading down.

Agreed, of course it would try to rain on a weekend we have two events going on.
Even if there is no lightning, rain completely changes the dynamics of the trail. I'll be watching too.

+1 on the weather watch. This would be my first time out there and while I'm sure it would be good experience, I'm not so sure that me being inexperienced on the dirt....mud with my X would be wise.
-
I was in but Im going to pass on this event, I have unexpected expenses and currently running low on funds... wasn't able to get a cb radio on time...
next time gentlemen... :/

By not having a radio when you show up nobody is going to take your ticket and send you home. You will just miss out on a bunch of trash talking. On the bigger multi day runs communication gets more important because people can get spread out for several miles and with that the CB's don't generally work very well anyway.
-
I second what Celt said, comms are good, but on a run like this you don't necessarily need a radio. We'll stick you in the middle of the group and you'll be good.

Looks like I won't be able to attend.
I am bum. It's going to rain and the trail will be extra fun.
-
Apologize to sound like a total noob.
where exactly is the meet point? as stated before there is a good chance of me not going but I want to take the reason of the doubt and prepare in case i can swing by and try it.
as far as my understanding from researching abit, i got this location. Coord: 34.299002, -117.457607 as the beginning of the trail.

Well, weather.com says there is still a 50% chance of rain on Sunday. They did take the thunder storm symbol off, so I am planning on hitting the trail as planned. Who's with me?

I am still down.
-
I am also in but do have concern with my 2wd and any real mud. I've done cleghorn 2-3 times but never in the mud. Though I did just upgrade my tires which will make a difference I'm sure.
Any thoughts from someone who has been up there in the rain?
-
You will be fine on the fire road. Most off shoots starts with an inclines so if you want to try it, but cannot make it, gravity will help you back down.
Whatever you do just don't go in the skull and crossbones trail of you are a 2wd. It's marked by a rock.
-
Nilda and I are in!
There won't be any real mud on the fire road, just less dust and better traction
-
I'm still in. O0
-
We plan on being there. Will try to be at McDonalds 8:30, then meet the group at 9am.
-
Which McDonalds? The one off the 138?
-
Yes. Here's the address....3230 Wagon Train Rd. Just one exit past Cleghorn Road.
-
CAWoody I'm trying to make it on this run. Just wanna let u know! Gotta see about taking care of a few things first alright mate? Cheers!
PS-I'll post whether i'm for sure or not as soon as I find out!
-
How necessary is underbody protection for this run? I'm still waiting on Shrockworks to deliver my rock sliders and I don't have any skid plates. I do have a 2" suspension lift though, so there's that.

From what I understand, you can pick and choose what sections you want to attempt. The main fire road isn't too rough. (I think)
This will be my first time about there and I am in a stock Pro-4X. I'm hoping to order sliders in the near future from White Knuckle. I am going to play it very safe tomorrow and do the more noob friendly sections.
-
Sry I'm out for tomorrow. Rain voided my chores for today which I will need to take care of tomorrow!
-
Sliders and skid plates are not necessary for Cleghorn if you avoid the tougher off shoots. This is a good run if you just want to meet people and get a little muddy. You can sustain body damage if you get bold and try some of the tougher sections but you should be fine if you use restraint.
-
Well, I'm out. I couldn't get caught up on my projects, some are rolling over to tomorrow. This is also contributed to me not being able to finish my homework. Have fun tomorrow.

Nilda and I won't be able to make it this morning. Should be a great day, take pics.

I'm out too. :(
Got home from my hockey game late last night to learn that my wife picked up a wedding party today. (She does hair) Which means I'm on baby duty today from now til the early after noon.

question is, who went and will there be pics? :D
-
four of us showed. good times were had and quite a few photos were taken. I will be working on uploading some tonight

okay here are a couple of the shots I got. It was a beautiful day and the dirt was perfect! Thanks for making this possible CAWoody

What a fun day! Nobody wrecked and all the trucks performed to the best of their ability. Thank you for the good time and pics will be up soon. Was nice to meet you guys.
-
We had a great time! Nice to meet everyone. Thanks CaWoody for leading the group.
-
Great looking photos everyone! Looks like it was a PERFECT day out on the trail. Tim, your rig is such a freaking beast!
-
We had a great time. It was greatmeeting everybody. We hit a lot of the off-shoot trails to find them really washed out, it made for some interesting sounds coming from under the rig. Unfortunately I need to look into some new springs, The rig acted like it haf a load into is pants and I tucked the wheels on almost every obstacle. Another grand out the door. :o
-
Looks like it was a gorgeous day on the trail, glad everyone had a good time.
-
Nice pix fellas! Really wish I could have made it out! Glad to hear everyone made it out damage free.

Looks like a lot of fun guys! Only 6 more weeks until I graduate, and then I'll be able to participate. Woohoo!
