Nice bikes fellas. When's the group ride? Yall need to come out to Pasadena and ride one of the best single tracks in SoCal "El Prieto" on the hills above JPL.
-
JPL was horrible for me, crashing left n right trying to be the next aaron gwin... snow summit is opening in a few weeks.. we can get together to ride

I'm not much of a jumper for Summit. I'm more into the technical stuff. I might have to bust out the full face helmet and join you.

Last year, Cinco de Mayos ride ended like this for me. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160516/637f296714253b9c96b4a3b4116ea820.jpg) no alcohol involved either.

It was on my local trails at Sycamore Canyon (Riverside) I was trying to PR a new section of trail with a twisty set of berms, and went flying. Broken Femur. 48 days of the bike. Haha, that was the worst part. My wife thinks I'm nuts.

thats why i stopped using strava!! also local law enforcement would check on trails riders will and use the strava against the biker going in restricted areas...

It's actually stiffer than any traditional fork, and has the same set up at the traditional Head Shok's that C'dale made for awhile. The main reason I sold this and bought the Specialized Stumpy was service...had a hard time finding mechs that would work on the Lefty.
But it does look weird for sure...it did make front tire repairs easy though, never had to remove the wheel!

What happened to the Phat bike, the Nomad, the TCR?
-
(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160517/3fdaab6ffb4179914db54a3a7572ef49.jpg) I ride the TCR as much as I can. I avoided the roadie thing for many, many, years. Now I'm enjoying it up to the point of shaving my legs and taking epo. Won't go there.
Here's my Trance- (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160517/9a9641a5309cc69b46fa1d7cff769a72.jpg) converting to 1x10 was the best thing I ever did.

At least part of the shifting system is sort-of indexed, so not completely old-style there.

And lastly, some of you may have only heard of these, but never actually seen them . . .

I've had too many bikes over the years to list. I do miss riding, I just got tired of the long drives to the trail heads. Especially because I live in Long Beach and worked in Irvine for the past 6 years, so I was really burned out on driving by the time the weekend came.

My buddies got a Nomad. He calls it his cross country bike. His other one is a Nuke Proof Pulse. They are awesome bikes though.

Yep, I'm bumping this. It's been almost 20 years since I've really been on a bike. I picked up an old Specialized Rock Hopper. It's not even close to new or fancy by today's standards, but it should be good to get me back started again. Apparently, that front fork was crap during its day, so it's really crap now. I'll be replacing it in the near future. Any recommendations? I'd also probably need to enlist someone's help to do it. I only know the basics about bicycles. I'm sure this will be a throwback for some of you all.

To be honest, it would be more worthwhile to put money into a newer bike. Unless you can find a new/used fork for free, same with the brakes, everything has been disc on MTB for awhile now. If you got disc brakes, you would have to upgrade your wheels too. That stem looks pretty long too, be very careful when descending, otherwise it will send ya OTB.

Thanks, I wasn't planning on going crazy and I probably won't touch anything but the forks, if I can find a good deal. This is just to get me started into it again and get me past our baby being born. After that, I'll be able shop for something newer.

The good news is you have an adjustable/thread less headset. Makes lubrication and maintenance a snap.
On the other hand, if you wanted to replace the fork sourcing one won't be difficult, it's just a function of spending the $$$ that you could (as BeeDee suggested) invest in a more technologically advanced steed.
Replied to your PM, ride this Rockhopper til the 26" wheels fall off and have fun!!!

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it a lot. Usually, when I jump into something (or back in, as in this case), I try to do some learning about it first. This time, it's going the other way around. When I rode as a kid and teenager, it was always on Wal-Mart or K-mart type bikes. There's really nothing you needed to know about those, assemble and jump on. Even though this thing is old, it has more technology on it than I've ever seen on any bicycle I've ever owned. Yes, that's probably scary to some of you all. Anyway, I'll ride the wheels off this thing. Thanks for the help, Ghost and Beedee.

Sweet bike Rick! I did the same thing as you a few months back and purchased a used, "basic" Specialized Hard Rock. I was looking at the Rock Hoppers and Hard Rocks all over Craigslist, and finally found someone parting with a great Hard Rock that was well cared for, for $100. Worth every penny as a starter bike for me! I just needed something that could hold all my weight to get me into the hobby without spending thousands of dollars. So far, I've been super happy with it. Haven't taken it anywhere extreme, but I've hit the dirt a few times and it knows every road around my neighborhood at this point. I'm like you - I was super into BMX when I was a teenager and never got into MTB. The only mountain bikes I've ever owned were cheap walmart ones that would derail the chain as soon as you put any kind of power into your pedaling. So I'm stoked on this bike!
For the record, Ghost65 gave me pretty much the same advice when I was asking for his opinions before I pulled the trigger on this bike. Ride the hell out of it until you decide you need/want something better, and then upgrade the whole bike and sell this one for what you paid for it. Oh, and the other advice he gave me was to stay the hell away from the MTB forums, unless I needed another money pit to spend all my paychecks on. :D

Edwin pointed me to pinkbike.com and I've done my best to stay away. lol I'm going to try to avoid this becoming a money pit, but we all know how that goes. After Jenny has the baby, we'll get her something so that we can ride together through the neighborhoods. She's not real comfortable right now and I know being on a small seat will just make it worse.
