Title: The Improper Way to Recover Broke Vehicle...
Post by: RikRong on April 10, 2018, 09:10:04 AM
These pics and videos have been making their way around social media over the last couple of days.  I thought I'd share over here too, for those that don't do social media.  I'm not doing it to make fun of the dude or gloat about a Tacoma getting destroyed.  There are a lot of lessons in this recovery and lot things were done incorrectly and without a regard for safety.  We can learn a lot from this attempted "recovery."

Edit: not sure why the video links don't show up on here, but they show up on Tapatalk.

Here is what the owner said on Tacoma World, username SilverSky:
There are some guys came saying hey man we winch people out let’s do this we tied the driveshaft so doesn’t get stuck in the dirt and I was like let me tie the axle to the leaf Springs and the dumbass was like, no no you don’t need to you don’t have to it’s all fine and you saw the video you saw what happened and then those fuckers bounced. A lot of it’s my fault for listening to dumbasses but it is what it is

All of it is the owner's fault, except for maybe the u-bolts breaking.  I'm sure he didn't do any of the install himself.  However, he could've perfectly well told the other people no, but he chose not to.

I think a big lesson here for everyone is to make sure you have recovery points.  So many people go out on runs and don't have recovery points.

He has/had a rear recovery point. You can see it in the third to last picture that RR posted. (i think that is a recovery point in the hitch)

The parties involved we all really fortunate someone wasn't injured...with that much adrenaline flowing, obviously some very poor decisions were made.

A real shame...$40K truck off to salvage... :(

Probably more like $55,000 after tax, title, gap insurance, and the suspension work.  ???  So hard to watch
