I always travel with two GPS's and paper maps with a compass ... I think I'm paranoid until I read about guys like these:

A cellular phone? There's a lot of areas out there where a ham radio might be more useful. Or a SPOT.

I rarely get cell reception out in the desert. i should carry more detailed paper maps.

This is why if your in the desert no matter what time of the year it is you go with at least three day supply of evry thing. You always stay near your car.

Very true...seriously considering a SPOT.

Hand help GPS, topo maps, cell phone, HAM radio (as soon as I finish getting it installed), supplies to last 2-3 days, and someone back home who know where we went and when we're supposed to get back (roughly).
That's how typically how I try to ensure I make it back from every adventure.

Meh. It's all about perspective. Had they had some tasty beverages, they could've have been "hanging out and enjoying the desert" instead of "lost."
