Hello from Pacific Palisades
« on: July 10, 2015, 06:13:31 PM »
Okay Pac Pal may not be the hot bed of 4x4 enthusiasts, but I have a new toy.

I'm looking to do a few mods including replacing the rack, adding a awning, along with front and rear bumpers.

Over the past several years, a group of us have been going up to the Panamint Valley to camp, hike, and take pictures. I finally got tired of having to hitch a ride and, after lots of research, landed on picking up the PRO-4X. I am over the moon about it and can't wait to get hooked into fellow owners.

Cheers,

Hank

Welcome from Orange.  Pacific Palisades?? Shouldn't you be in a G-wagon or Range Rover? ;) :D  You'll find the Xterra to be just as nimble, maybe even more, on the dirt as those 100K rigs.  We just don't have espresso machines as an option.
Be careful when you follow the masses..... sometimes the "M" is silent.

Love the G-Wagon reference. Recently a group of friends went up to Cerro Gordo and were planning on going up to the top of the mountain. One friend used his wife's Range Rover. Needless to say, the got a blow out in the worst possible spot above Cerro Gordo. Then they found out the spare was a weak suck compact spare. They made it almost all the way down before she blew. It was a total CF. Guys wife said "Never AGAIN!" and he hasn't been with us since.

The next year a trio of us, in two vehicles, went up to try again and look what happened:

Now that I am at the big kid's table, it is time to try a third time...

Cheers,

Hank

Thanks Frank. I have been taking pictures for a few years and really have enjoyed going up to the Death Valley National Park. So much to see. Now that I have an Xterra of my own, I'll be making more trips.

My next order of business is to get the Xterra outfitted. From what I have been able to read online, talking with people face to face is SO much better, I'm looking to create an Overland type setup.

One item I am looking for is a replacement roof rack which I can use as a shooting platform (photography shooting that is). Getting up the additional 6 or so feet gives a different perspective.

google dephep, he makes drop in racks for the stock roof rails, he has an option to add an expanded metal floor so that you can stand up on the roof, cheaper than a full replacement and just as useful with a little less real estate.

Thanks Knightrider. I'll give him a shout. It looks like a good alternative.
