Anyone got directions or GPS coordinates to the lave tubes near 17 mile point on the Mojave Road?

I'm itching to go back and might run the length of the thing from east to west between Christmas and New Years if the weather holds.

Yeah I just found them - slightly south west of this cinder cone but not all the way to tank five.

Yeah this is the web site I used. I had to download an Excel spread sheet to convert Easting/Northing to Lat and Long but it worked out well enough. This has to be an over night trip for me as it's an easy three and a half hours from Riverside.

I'm thinking of driving out the 40 to the Needles area early morning, start the Mojave Road before lunch, tour Fort Piute, lunch, continue west and get to the Mid Hills Campground for dinner.

Day two head south off the Road to the Hole in the Wall area, tour there, return back to the Road, tour Marl Springs and lunch, then the Lava Tubes, and camp near 17-mile point on night two.

Day three cross Soda Lake (or route around it if it's still wet), through Shaw Pass, into Afton Canyon, camping at the Afton Canyon campground night three.

Day four finish the trail at Camp Cady and hit the 15 home.

Santa brought me DeLorme Topo 8 and a matching PN-40 GPS so I've been building up a map using the Wells, Massey/Wilson, and Casebier books. DeLorme allows you to download the 7.5" topo maps and even 1M resolution black and white photos and import them into the program for creating custom routes. Pretty neat.

I figure the club will come out this spring and do the trail but we want to run the thing for the full length this month if we can and the weather holds.

Most people in the club have better taste than I ,and Mitch and Dan obviously are smarter than me as they sent me into several dubious places to look for viruses that they would not go.

Don't let John fool you, he's actually a pretty good guy to have along on a trip, always good company. He will, however, try to do some really strange things at times. For example, we were out at Bombay Beach (Salton Sea) one time, and John spotted this old truck. I took one look at it and stepped back, all I could think of was tetanus.



John, however, had other ideas. First, he made sure no one was watching.



Then . . . he tried to drive it away.
