How many days for a SCCX trip
« on: July 24, 2010, 12:28:51 PM »
So running along with how far you want to go for an SCCX trip this one seeks to find out how dedicated of a camper are you?

Many times we have to dry camp but others we can find a public campground with showers and pit toilets that do help keep things a wee bit more civil. I'm looking to get some longer trips organized and feel free to comment in a post if you're willing to camp out for longer periods and if you prefer shower and toilet facilities.

Lots of these more interesting places are further north in the Sierras or Death Valley area and it takes me a good 3-4 hours to make it to the trail head. Once driving that far I want to get the most from my investment in fuel and explore the area for more than one night. Driving that long sort of limits the amount of time wheeling that can be done unless the day is very long.

Thoughts and concerns are welcome.

I would put myself in the two night/two day category (haha, didn't see that one on the poll!  ;D), simply because I can leave work on a Friday afternoon and drive to set up camp, and then spend Saturday and Sunday camping.

I agree, maximizing wheel/camp time is a priority, and this poll is an excellent idea.   8)

Also, as far as the camping style (primitive vs. more amenities), I would lean more towards the more amenity group, as I often camp with my 10 year old son, and the availability of toilets and running water is of value to me.  Although, with proper planning and preparation a primitive camping trip is not out of the question.

If I wanted Denise to go with me for more than the usual 2 day 1 night trip there would need to be a toilet and a shower involved. The porta-privi keeps her happy on the short trips.

Rodger that - I have a porta-shower for those longer trips. Sure makes for better company!

I'll go anywhere, but I lean towards primitive camping in as-remote-as-possible places.   Sequoia is pretty cool as long as you go on a weekday.

I'm looking to take my vacation in October.  I'd definitely like to spend 3-4 days camping.

I also prefer the more remote trips with primitive camping.  If I feel the need to shower I use the solar shower.

So . . . who was the other person (besides me) who voted "I'm scared of the dark"?

I can tell you, by the way, from personal experience, that "I'm scared of the dark" is NOT the right answer to a TSA agent's question as to why you have 3 flashlights and a headlamp plus spare batteries and bulbs in your carry-on bag.

As to the question at hand - I like to have a shower and facilities, but don't mind roughing it for one or two nights.

We would not mind roughing it a bit, but would not mind to stay in a hotel/motel eather. and 2 day 1 night would be fine with me. possible 2 night depending on location.

Right now, because of the kids, I would only be to do a one-day round trip.

Hey there, this is my first post on this forum though I'm a long time member of ClubXterra.org. Can't believe I;m just discovering this forum now....

:)

My preference is longer, primitive camping trips where you don't see another human being (other than the people you're with) for most of the duration. I love trips like the Mojave Trail and Gohler Wash (Death Valley).

Meeee! I'm scared of the dark! :D
I've been on a two week backpacking trip in New Mexico, then worked in the same area for two months, also living in tents (but with a cooking cabin powered by propane). Those were some of the best experiences I've had!
Multi-day trips would be great. :)

I finally managed to take the family camping for 4 days to Sequoia over the 4th of July weekend.  Some friends of ours helped ease my wifes fears.  Since we managed that, we have decided to extend our Xcursions to several days, preferably over a long weekend.
