Anza Borrego - Sunday 15 Jan 2012 - a few pics
« on: January 16, 2012, 09:30:33 PM »
A few of us got together yesterday to wander around Anza Borrego for a little photo/exploration trip. It's beautiful out there this time of year - anyone in So Cal should really make an effort to get out there. It's not all that hard to find something scenic out there, and there are a few challenging places to drive along the way too.

We started out north of the Borrego Sink and headed down south and east towards San Felipe Wash, then into Borrego Mountain Wash as far as you can go before it gets too narrow to drive in. We stopped for lunch, and then hiked The Slot. Afterwards we drove back north in Borrego Mountain Wash out to San Felipe, and continued east to Blow Sand Canyon and up onto the Goat Trail. We took that west to its end at Buttes Pass Road, then turned north and made our way up to S-22 via San Felipe, Military Wash, Cut Across Trail, Fault Wash, Arroyo Salado and finally Ella Wash. We got to S-22 a little after sunset.

Our little group in San Felipe Wash (my X, Mitch's X, Mark's Frontier, and Rae's Jeep).

Near our lunch spot at the base of The Slot. The little rock waterfall section in Borrego Mountain Wash was a lot of fun this time, but I didn't get many pictures of us coming through there.

Of course we stopped in Santa Ysabel on the way out from San Diego.

Hiking in The Slot is always fun (and sometimes a bit unnerving if you stop to think of earthquakes).

Yes, that is the trail you are looking at here. This is actually one of the wider spots.

Here's another view of that leaning column of sandstone.

The views from the top of the Goat Trail were pretty good.

The sun dropped below the clouds for the last 20 minutes or so before sunset, so of course we had to make a few stops to take pictures. With the sun low in the sky behind us the view to the north was pretty spectacular.

As the sun got lower and the light got warmer it just kept getting better.

One last shot after we finished airing up the tires, and then it was time to head home.

You can find a few more of my pictures from Sunday in Anza Borrego here:

Hi Dan. We followed pretty much the same route we did when you were there in November. The only thing we left off was the drive out along the ridge over the Slot. We also left off the u-turn in the middle of the Borrego Sink.
