Camping in Idyllwild - suggestions?
« on: March 11, 2013, 03:14:51 PM »
We hit Idyllwild back in December and I have been itching to get back ever since. Heading down to Idyllwild this weekend with an amiga, going to scope out Black Mountain and Toolbox yellow post campgrounds. Does anyone have a different / better suggestion in those mountains?

I've camped at Hurkey Creek a few times. It has an awesome 10mile MTB loop. Grounds have hot showers and clean restrooms.

I've heard good things about Hurkey :) But that'll be for a bigger group. This little woman works her own horse stables and loves camping, so showers and running water are not the target - too many people. We'll be hunting for seclusion.

^ ^ ^ That.  ;D

Rangers said Toolbox is a good area so leaning towards that.

Likely there isnt, but is there any fishing up around that area?  Growing up in the mountains of norcal I am used to being able to fish all day long while camping.

Lake Hemet is about 5 min's past Hurkey Creek and about 20-25 min from Idyllwild.

If you're looking for seclusion, don't tell US where you're going ::)

So... we didn't find these yellow post sites, but found dirt trails on fire road 6S13 with a 'CAMPFIRES ALLOWED" sign at the front. Climbed the mountain but saw mostly OHV trail so we came back down after about an hour of off roading, found a small clearing. Made our own camp  ;D

There Are some nice secluded camp grounds up there, some have restroom structures and tables but that it all. this is the location of one of the camps: http://goo.gl/maps/XmDoD

Please be careful out there, my parents live at the base of the Thomas Mountain Fireroad. Fires are always a threat :)

An awesome amiga who fell in love with my big polar fleece cloak. Think she wore it the whole time hahaa.

We looked for the marked sites and were unsuccessful. I train under a former Marine Scout/Sniper and LA Sheriff. I hope you'll believe me in saying I'm more than careful - cleared a ten foot space circling a two foot deep pit for a low and well watched fire... That was the first hour of making camp. Always treading lightly!
