Labor Day Weekend
« on: September 03, 2013, 10:44:19 PM »
Did anyone do anything fun with your X?

I made it up to Big Bear for some much need outdoor time.
Spent three days camping at Hana Flat north of Fawnskin.

GhostX pointed me in the direction of some very awesome trails that my lightly modded X could totally handle.

I had a great time and learned some things about driving off road.  Something I have not done much of.

Anyways, here are some photos

All clean.

Labor Day Weekend

We came upon a water crossing.  Remembering my YouTube training, I quickly took off my boots and waded in.  It wasn't too deep and I felt like a bit of an idiot, but safety first, right?

We decided kind of last minute to take the desert route home.  Glad we did.  What an awesome drive.

That looks AWESOME!  Do you remember the names of the trails? From the pictures you posted it looks like a 2wd could do it(?).

2wd for sure!

I got a PM about my route as well, so I will outline it here.

In my particular situation, we had campsites reserved at Hanna Flat campground.

FYI.  I didn't keep track of any millages on this experience.  I just kind of drove.  So, I can't help with turn left after 3.58072 miles.  However, I can operate google maps, barely, and will mark major intersections with GPS coordinates.  Just C/P those bad boys into CLASSIC google maps and you're set

Day 1

We chose to drive up from the OC via Highway 18.  The entry point we used to 3n16 was Crab Flats via Green Valley Lake Rd.

Turn off from highway 18 at Green Valley Lake Rd.

34.219414,-117.071644

Green Valley Lake Rd is paved.  The entrance to 3n16 is Crab Flats Rd. which is dirt.  If you hit the lake, well you've gone too far.  ( we hit the lake and turned around)

34.233448,-117.089466

Once on Crab Flats Rd. (3n16) you just kind of drive.  Our goal for the day was to hit Coxey Rd (3n14) and hang a right.

Intersection of 3n16 and 3n14

34.319692,-117.01033

We then traveled from the intersection of 3n16 and 3n14 to Hanna Flat campground.

34.288859,-116.974312

Day 2

We headed up to the intersection of 3n16 and 3n14 to do the second half of 3n16.
We traveled down 3n16 until we reached a sign that read something like 3 miles to highway 38 - 3n12 to Little Bear Summit and Hanna Flat.

34.309594,-116.927332

Since we were camped at Hanna Flat, it only made sense to loop it around.  It worked.  We were back at Hanna Flat

Day 3

A friend of ours in her FJ wanted to do some off roading so we did day 2 in reverse.  Started at Hanna Flat and ended at the intersection of 3n16 and 3n14.  At this point, we sent the FJ back to camp and we headed down 3n14 the other way towards Lucern Valley and Apple Valley.

Hopefully this all makes sense.

One tool we did use was having the Forest service maps on a tablet.  Note.  The file is like 20mbs.  Give it a second to render and you can make sense of it.

Link to forest service map.

I can't wait to get up there again.  Maybe an excursion needs to be planned?  Plenty of stuff for 2wd dudes and fully modded dudes.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing. The Big Bear area has some nice trails and scenery. Been too long since I've been able to make it up there.

Looks like a good time. Reminds me of when I used to live there and we  would take some of these same roads to the hot springs at deep creek.
