Calcite Mine/Ocotillo Wells
« on: December 01, 2014, 12:44:41 AM »
I'm headed down to do a Calcite Mine run then some wheeling through Ocotillo Wells on 12/12/14 then an overnight returning home early evening the next day. Camping would be in one of the washes yet to be determined in the area. Wind and daytime temperatures would factor that. If you haven't been up to the Calcite Mine it's a fun albeit short run with spectacular scenery and photographic opportunities. The road itself is pretty rough with some fairly steep climbs that get a little off camber. I can tailor the run throughout Ocotillo Wells if anyone has a particular area they would like to go and see. Trip would of course be family friendly and campfire mandatory.

Have fun Erik...the desert is perfect right now.  I will be...you guessed it:  working...or deleting threads, whichever comes easier.  ;D

How about Dudley's bakery? (https://www.google.com/maps/search/dudley's+bakery/@33.109314,-116.6747277,17z  about 1400? The only thing is 12/11 is a Thursday so I'm hoping this is just a typo and you will still be able to go. Looks like the weather is calling for rain in Borrego Springs on Friday so I'm thinking I won't camp in a wash Thursday night, rather occupy the high ground somewhere and have a nice fire.

Maybe it was just wishful thinking that I thought the 11th was Saturday.   I guess I'm out.  Hm so what am I going to do this weekend?  :-\

Bump.....    Dates have changed to 12/12/14 to 12/13/14 since there is a high wind advisory in that area with gusts up to 60 MPH. Supposed to calm Friday morning so if anyone else can make it you are of course welcome. Still meeting up here at 1400:

Of all the desert elements that I have encountered...wind is my least favorite.

Creates tented havoc, camp chairs end up in different zip codes, campfires become blow torches, and sandwiches truly emulate their adjective crunchiness.  :D

Yeah, wind sucks in the desert.  In addition to the list above you can add that it can kill cameras.  In my case it was even a weather-sealed one.

Actually Frank, wind "blows." ;)

As much fun as that was,,,,,,,,,,, I'll pass, being a sugar cookie isn't my absolute favorite! But in looking at the forecast we might need some form of watercraft at least on Friday.

Trip update,,,, Pyrofox and I headed out there. First night was rather chilly too bad I didn't get pics of Pyro retreating into his truck from the cold ground. Then there is the story of the forgotten beer and the mad dash down to the Butterfield Stage Store for a re-supply. Had a good trip overall but were hung up by some guy driving a four letter word "Jeep" who messed up a rim right at the mouth of the squeeze. Dudley's still makes a great sammich and Blair Valley is still the worst place to camp in the winter.
