ARB Mounting Brackets
« on: April 24, 2018, 11:34:59 AM »
Looking for ideas for mounting my ARB awning. Anyone willing to snap a pic or two of their solution or recommend a product they like?

Not sure of your Fab skills, but TORO was able to weld these up pretty quick for me. The Yakima mounts are hard to come by, but I think I have seen people use the QuickFist mounts as well.

Those are awesome!
Welding is not one of my skills, however.
How's the room working out for you? I'm thinking about getting one later. I think my wife would like it when she comes along on my expeditions.

The room is great. Takes about 3 mins to set up if you have an extra set of hands, and about as fast to take down. It is fairly easy to roll back up and get back into its bag, and its durability is pretty good. When we camp we sleep in the X and use the room as storage, changing room, and shelter from sun or wind or rain during lunch/dinner. It is something I bring on most trips in case weather turns. We use it for any camping trip that is more than 2 nights in one location, otherwise its a bit much and we just deploy the awning. Overall, it is one of my wife's favorite additions to the X, along with the awning.

Plus, on Feb 1st, my wife and I had our first child, so we will for sure be using the room much more often as a changing area and a place to keep the pack and play out of the sun and wind.

here a a couple extra pics of the room in use  http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=3468.msg44713#msg44713

as well as a shameless plug of my current set up http://www.sccxterra.com/smf/index.php?topic=4448.msg52563#msg52563

I personally used the Yakima X Tower mounts until I converted to a full replacement rack. These are unfortunately getting very hard to find now, and they're overpriced when you do find them. There are a few posts on the topic that I found, but most of the images are gone (stupid photobucket!). Take a look at these and see if they help at all:

Unfortunately, without fabrication skills or a buddy who is willing to weld something up for you, your only real options are something like the Yakima X Towers / Fourtreks mounts, or going with the muffler clamp/L bracket solution. I've heard of many people using the muffler clamp solution with no issues of loosening up or slipping. Seems like most people put some kind of high grip material between the clamp and the factory roof rack rails (like weather stripping or rubber hose), and clamp it down nice and tight.

Congratulations on the little 'un. I imagine the room will be awesome for traveling with a child. I like the setup. "Everything you need. Nothing you don't"

The amount of posts on the awning subject is plentiful. I have been to the links you have posted but the lack of pictures is frustrating. That's why I was asking to see some pictures if anyone had any. Hate to order the Fourtreks because of the $$$ but the do look good and they look like they are quality.

Here's  my solution, the goal was low budget (everything was used or discounted) and low profile.. both were achieved and it hasn't failed me yet.  Consists of 50" Thule load bars,  McMaster Carr vibration dampening u- bolts and ARB universal mounting brackets.  I'll be adding Rotopax mounts to the top at some point.

Thanks for the pick. I thought about going that route but I have a drop in rack that prevents me from going under and blocks too much going over. Pretty sure I have to clamp on to the factory rack.

I didn't know you had a drop-in rack. That should make it far easier, as you already have a mounting surface that is attached to your factory rack. You should be able to just use the ARB universal brackets pictured in fourxfunk's setup, or even just some solid/beefy L brackets from the local hardware store.

From pictures of the ARB bracket it didn't look to me like it would be long enough to mount to the rack and make it past the factory tubes. I would have to do something like in Fourxfunk's picture. Add a bar or channel underneath or over the tubes.
