Some Ideas For The 2WD People

There have been a few people asking about using 2WD Xterras on some of the recent trips, but the last 2 have not been appropriate.  This is, however, a great time of year for Anza Borrego Desert State Park, and there are some really scenic trails out there than can be done in 2WD. Some can be done easily, others may require a bit of skill, care and finesse (or a shovel).  I'll post a few suggestions, and anyone else who can think of some please feel free to add to the list.

- Blair Valley (Anza Borrego, off of County Road S-2) - the whole loop through Blair Valley, and the routes up to all 3 hiking trails can be done in 2WD. Stay off the dry lake bed, and this time of year watch for the occasional mud patch. The 3 hikes are always fun, this can make a great day trip, and there are lots of good campsites there as well. Keep an eye on the Xcursions forum, I generally try to set up a run out there in the Spring.

- Buttes Pass Road (Anza Borrego, north of Hwy 78 just west of Ocotillo Wells) - I was out there today. You can easily get to the parking area for The Slot hiking trail, and also to the end of Hawk Canyon. There are a few other trails right around there that are in good enough shape for 2WD as well, and even a good portion of San Felipe Wash if you just watch out for the soft sand in places. Lots of good camping areas here too, and great scenery.  If you are in to looking at desert wildflowers in the early Spring, Buttes Pass is looking like it's going to be pretty good this year.

- Fish Creek (Anza Borrego - south of Hwy 78 at the end of Split Mountain Road from Ocotillo Wells) - You can get to the Wind Caves at 4 miles in easily, after that you'll need to be careful, but I've seen 2WD Xterras get to the middle or even end of Sandstone Canyon, which is 14 miles from the start of Fish Creek.

As always, use appropriate caution, and remember that trails change. What was passable one day might not be the next time.

Palomar Divide Road is another easy, scenic drive.
I'd rather be happy than right any day.

I always enjoy 3N16 up in Big Bear.  It's fun to run it east to west from Baldwin Lake to Arrowbear.  It's a good 2-3 hour one way trip.

Note: 4wd is required in the winter, so 2wd friends make sure not to do this in snow.

I almost forgot about Main Divide Road. We did a club run up there a few years ago. It was really nice up there. I think we started someplace behind Lake Elsinore and worked our way up the mountain to Santiago Peak, then out to Ortega Hwy.
