Mammoth Mountain (February 2010)

*to the tone of a frequent Frosty-Heidi-and-Frank caller...

"...HI GUYS!"

Finally got a Smugmug account so please bear with me while I share a few pics from our recent trip to Mammoth Lakes, CA. Pictures were taken after being caught in a winter storm at 11,053 feet... things could only get colder.... and fluffier!

Icicles on the ARB bumper.

Looks like we're about to put these snow-rated tires to the test....

My first trial installation on these BFG's. The retaining rubber cable proved to be a little too small to go all around so I had to resort to my carabiner-equipped 300 lb. bungee cords. Looks complicated... but the tires sure did grip!

A nice think blanket of snow.

It took almost an hour of scraping and shoveling around... and almost a few frost-bitten phalanges to uncover the mystery that lies beneath the white surface. A picture that reminds me of the fuzzy dog van that was driven cross-country in the movie Dumb and Dumber.

Even the Safari Snorkel was not spared. Looks like a white-haired Afro doesn't it?

About an hour ago, there's at least 3 feet of snow all over the area.

Interesting contrast of green, white and blue.

SCCX for life!

Good times!

Great pictures.  It looks like you had an excellent time.
I'd rather be happy than right any day.

Those turned out great Fred.

The one where you are looking down on the X from the back, it almost looks like a small toy in that shot.  What's with the windshield wipers sticking up in some of the others?

I like the one with the blue sky in the background too.

Looking forward to seeing more, I'll keep an eye on your smugmug page.

Thanks guys!

As far as the windshield thing, apparently, it is a common practice in places prone to snow--to prevent your windshield wipers from getting stuck to your windshield. Also, it prevents ice from accumulating in and around the wipers, and thus to prevent scratching your windshield.

...I was told.
Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst!
