Any one going out this Saturday?
« on: June 21, 2011, 11:46:27 PM »
Looking to do a Saturday day trip... nothing crazy, just a quick ride, get out early and get back to my folks home in Chino Hills by 6:00 pm. Any one want to join? Any ideas for trails in the inland empire? I have an '08 Off Road with a mild lift and stock tires - my uncle will be bringing his '03 supercharged that is completely stock.

Hey Zwolf,
This is OCXJocky I am booked this weekend but would be happy to participate next weekend.   I have a number of suggestions around the Big Bear area.   One might be Gold Mountain.  That is pretty tough but have been advised that that a stock X aired-down would do a good job.   Maybe there is someone around that has already done Gold Mountain and could advise.

Let me know if next week might be an option

So... Our plan is to go to http://www.dirtopia.com/wiki/Cleghorn_Ridge_Trail

We will meet early in the morning, I'll set a place and time probably around 9-9:30 (this is early for me) and update the thread. Jamiedubs... Are you in?

If you have never run Cleghorn before, just a heads up that if you take a side trail that you are not familiar with you could possibly end up in some mighty interesting "situations" since black diamond trails crosscross the more mellow trails.

We just did the Gold Fever Trail last weekend.  Been to most the spots on the trail before but it was nice to get the history lesson too.  The weather was awesome and I'd recommend the trail.
This isn't Santa's Workshop.  This place smells like mushrooms and everyone looks like they want to hurt me.

With a new truck and wanting to just get some dirt under the tires I'd suggest just cruising around the fire roads out there.  You can take 3N16 all the way from Baldwin Lake area to Arrowbear.  It's pretty much the main road out there that all other trails branch off from.

RockinX - you were right, ran Cleghorn Trail, the main road is a simple fire road you could run with a Honda CR-V, but the side trails are a bit more intense. The first 5 or so weren't too challenging, the second to last was a challenge and the last one was pretty bananas. Along the way, we ran into a few friendly Jeepers and it was probably a good thing as we hit some parts that were pushing the limits of where Xterra's should go. As always, it was fun, luckily escaped with no damage and we look forward to getting back out there soon.

Check out the video of the end of the last trail, it was pretty much like this for about a 1/2 a mile or so.

Most of the xcursions that we do revolve around stock vehicles and are family oriented, so go with an attitude of adventure.  If one of the group leaders feels that a section is difficult, he will serve as a "Spotter".  Also most trails have a way of going around what you newbies call "crazy stuff".

First of all, great video!  The view was outstanding.  You had me on the edge of my seat and, for some reason, laughing the entire time.  Probably because I've been there, done that and know all too well the "what did I get myself into" feeling.  You start off thinking, well, if it gets too tough I will just turn around.  However, by the time it gets a bit too challenging, there is no way to turn around.  That is why I initially joined this club.  I had learned firsthand that it is not a good idea to go out alone after getting myself in a "situation."  Now I just hang around because it is fun being active outdoors and because of the great group of people that I have had the opportunity to meet through this shared interest.

Now that you've seen what your X can do, everything else will seem like child's play.   ;)

It was a riot, we were with my uncle, but went on this side trail on our own, the others had enough from the other trails - expected more of the same, but this last one was a doozy. Looking at the video, I realize the X is great, but IFS is a real downer. I also have an FJ62 and the solid axles just have so much more twist. I also could have taken some better lines in some places... but all in all I think we did great. I look forward to taking the Xterra out with you guys soon. Maybe a day trip on July 10th. Let me know if anyone is up for a ride.

One more video - as you all know, it is sometime hard to capture the inclines you are navigating on camera. This was a pretty steep grade, but this may have worked in my favor with gravity pulling us down and not only to the side. This is my daily driver, so I really can't afford to roll it, even if it looks like I really tried to do just that. Either way, check out the vid and let me know if any one wants to go out soon.
