Air compressor
« on: June 25, 2012, 06:04:03 PM »
I recently was at Harbor Freight and found a sweet deal on this air compressor.

It works well and for the price I got a extended 2 year warranty for 9$ . Any Kind of damage or defect.

It works well tried it out . Just thought I would share if anyone still needs one . Here's the link

This is a copy of the Viair. I had one of these for a while and it worked very well for the price. I originally bought it as a spare, but sold it to a friend only because it took up as much space as my primary compressor (I got a smaller one for the spare).

The only thing I would caution, and that goes for many things from HF, is to carry a spare if you're going out alone and will be in a situation where having it is critical. If neither of those apply - it's a great deal.

I got one of these with the warranty.  Another note for using one of these, if your not in a rush only air up two tires and then give it about 10 minutes to cool down a little bit.  She gets hot and the thermal load on the piston seems to be the weak link in it.  I personally do not want to test this thing to see if the thermal overload switch works.  I definately want OBA when I can afford it.  Hopefully I'll be able to build that into my new rear bumper, whenever that will be.  Speaking (writing??) of which, I need to fab up a temp one for the October run.

Warn Powerplant HD
they advertise a 100% duty cycle.
I have found that in reality I can air up 10 tires(33's) before she starts to get tired out(damn hot!).
I will be using the ARB for a back up since it will power my Locker.

Good for blowing the dust off your rig too..... :)

Did I mention 12,000 pounds of pulling power?

I'll be buying a Viair P90 this week from RuggedRocks....along w/ Staun deflators.

I am assuming the extra $$ for the compressor will be worth it...

Anyone have any experience w/ that compressor?  Anything newsworthy?

I have a P85 and it works great. I'm assuming the P90 will be just a little better. Make sure you get a 12v lighter extension that connect directly to the battery so you don't blow any fuses.

That combo will serve you well Christiaan.  I owned a Viair P90 and had much success with it.  It takes a little time to air up compared to others (we jokingly called ours the "socializers") but more time to bench race with buddies.  The Staun's you will love.

If we are lucky at Big Bear Mr. Haynes will break out his orange hose and offer his services to anyone without OBA.  (on board air)

Im thinking about getting that Harbor freight compressor and get a portable tank they sell and making my own OBA setup with that stuff. It should work like planned right?

I'm running the HF pump right now, the metal one that goes to 100psi w/ a 5 gallon tank.  I tell you right now get a larger tank, which I think wont help much, but definately get a better pump.  I only feel comfortable doing 2 31.5's at a time with a ten minute cool down between the two sets.  If you overheat, it's a 30 minute cool down time.  This is airing up from 20-35psi.  Deathly slow, and constantly worrying about the pump giving out cause it gets so hot.  I've only run into the thermal cutoff switch once, and the way I see it if you hitting that your working the pump to hard.  It's good for a temp solution, but in the end a better air pump would be worth your while.  With that pump you'd be better off just having the pump.

I would recommend getting the Q industries mv-50 or master flow mf-1050 pumps over harbor freight. I've had one for 3 years now and its still kicking, used it in 106degrees to fill 2 trucks from 15-40 without stopping multiple occastions. my friend finally picked up a pump for himself.  First a HF one and after it blowing the hose and making weird noises he returned it and now has the same one as me. No problems either
