Azusa Canyon Offroad Park Grand Opening 7-14-2012
« on: July 12, 2012, 08:38:41 PM »
I just found out about this place and it's opening this weekend.  Looks pretty cool and I might run up there Saturday and check it out.  Looks like some free stuff too.  I couldn't find a webpage for it except for the Facebook page.  Anyone interested in a loosely organized run up the canyon?

Probably going to be pretty busy but it's so close to home I thought I would at least check it out.

I used to go there years ago.  Back then not a lot of trails but a whole lot of mud.  Good times.

Must be a grand re-opening then.  That OHV park has been around for a while.  Didn't  realize it had closed.  There are 3 gas stations right off the 210 fwy. on the north side that could be used as a meet spot.  Back when I was into drift racing (hence the name SuperSlideStyle), we used  to meet at those gas stations and drift the canyon roads Thurday nights @ 10pm.

Lets go!!!

There are several gas stations on azusa exit... and if I'm right, there was like a vons or some supermarket on the way up.

What time should we meet? Who will go?

Just looked up on google maps, and there is a chevron gas station as soon as you get off the 210 fwy off Azusa ave.  We could all meet up here and caravan up to the OHV.

What time??? does 9am sound ok?

Okay I just drove up the the Offroad Park and questioned one of the organizers.  To be clear this is not the grand opening to the OHV area it's the grand opening to the offroad obstacle course just inside the OHV area and next to the parking lot.  They have taken large concrete drainage pipes, rocks, large boulders and cemented them together to form several obstacles.  That area is roped off and only a certain number of tucks will be allowed in at any one time.  The park opens at 8am so they are expecting tons of people lined up at the entrance of the parking lot.  When you enter they will ask if you are a spectator or wish to drive the course.  Normally it's $8 to get in but tomorrow it's free.  If a spectator they will direct you to park in the dirt just inside the OHV area.  If they have the number of people they are expecting there won't be enough parking there.  I watched one of the organizers argue with the Forrest Service OHV guy about opening up more of the OHV area for parking so it might be a little crazy in the morning.  The guys I spoke to said to get there early to make sure you get in.  There will be a free hot dog ticket and some vendors but I'd bring some drinks and maybe some food.

So for the course itself.....they are first opening the course up to professional drivers in custom rigs.  Then they will drive dignitaries around the course followed by an RC car demonstration.  There's going to be an opening ceremony and a raffle for kids, then one for adults and another to be one of the first to drive the course.  It sounded like it was going to be pretty tough to get to drive it tomorrow if they have the turn out they are expecting.

The suggestions for meeting spots are pretty good.  There are 3 gas stations at the Azusa exit of the 210 freeway.  All ranged in the $3.63 to $3.75 range.  The Mobil station has some parking and is in a good spot to meet limiting u-turns so I would say we should meet there.  It's just under 30 minutes to get to the course and they were suggesting we get there early so what about meeting at 7am and heading up around 7:20?  Is that too early for everyone?  I don't know how far people are driving for this event so let me know what you think.

Oh and if the time doesn't work for people it's not a big deal.  This isn't a trail run.  Everyone is welcome and whatever time works for you is fine.  It would be cool to get there/hang out together but we don't have to kill ourselves to meet up or miss out because of timing.
