Randsburg Old West Days Geocaching Event (9/15/12)
« on: August 20, 2012, 10:10:53 PM »
I was looking through my pictures the other day and saw a photo I had taken a couple years ago of a notice of the Randsburg Old West Days.

So I had searched online to find out when it would be held this year and noticed that the Ridgecrest California Geocachers Club is putting on an event that is "Open to Everyone!"

It sounds like it would be a lot of fun.  I think they are all mostly geocaching professionals though.

Yeah, it's a somewhat long drive from where I live and I am much closer.  But I'll probably go anyways but not so much for the caching.  In addition to posting the event for informational purposes and because we have these cool new subforums, I am trying to catch up to you in post count...although I have a ways to go.   ;)

LOL! RBDuffer
Sorry John, I meant I was planning to go to the Randsburg Old West Days, not crash the geocaching event.  I would enjoy geocaching more if, when I go through thick brush in ankle deep mud looking for a cache, that I come out with something other than leaves all over me and muddy feet.   :D

Been to the miner days in Randsburg once.  It was a fun trip.  The Ridgecrest Caching group is a pretty well run organization.  Been to a few of their events and they are well planned out and geared toward getting new people into caching.  I already have plans to go making quick run through the miner days, check in at the event so I can log it and then head out into the sand/dirt for some fun CacheX4ing.

I reread my post above and it sounded so negative, that I decided to explain what it is I like about geocaching.  I love being outdoors, driving off the main road and hiking (preferably in the desert) while being on the lookout to see what I can find, whether it is old bottles and tools, old caves and mines, railroad spikes, a lone flower surviving amidst rocks, animal bones with the hope of finding a perfectly intact skull (I know, I'm weird), hoping not to find big spiders or snakes, but if I do that is so cool, the oddly shaped tree or rock, an ant hole where you can watch busy ants doing their thing, a desert tortoise methodically making its way to an unknown destination, and the ever changing landscape from lava beds, washes, dried mud, colorful flowers, or the lack of any manmade object for as far as you can see.  It doesn't matter if the weather is catching your attention with huge white clouds or dark threatening clouds, whether you are in shorts looking for a patch of shade or bundled up trying to stay out of the rain.  When geocaching, you are looking so intently for an object that you will notice things that you otherwise would have walked by.  You look at everything from a new perspective.  For example, with a tree you may notice the knotholes, that uplifted root that could be hiding the treasure you are searching for.  That is why this sport intrigues me so much.

This description pertained to the Randsburg area, although you can pretty much visualize similar experiences at points of interest, historical areas (my favorite), at lakes, the mountains, countryside, beaches, and even your local neighborhood.  If I was a

Caching can be fun but what has made it the most fun for me is the people that I have met and become friends with.  We mostly go for off road caches and like to find interesting out of the way places and abandoned building, mines, ghost towns, cars/trucks and houses.  Out near Randsburg is the Burro Schmidt tunnel.  It's a 2000' long tunnel through a mountain dug over 30 years buy Burro Schmidt.  The idea was to find a better way to get his gold ore down the mountain.  Once through the other side he realized he was too high up on the mountain to make it possible to get the ore down.  Oh and he spent so much time digging and working to pay for the digging that he really didn't mine for gold.  What a complete waste of time and money.  There's a cache there and if you walk through the tunnel you can find it.  I did.

Near there are several other mines for gold and talc.

As for loading the gps I use a Garmin 62s and in my opinion the best gps on the market for caching.  When we go to an are we usually have a list of caches in mind and load just those we want to look for.  The gps has all the cache names, difficulty/terrain, descriptions, hints and the last several logs.  So it holds all the info you need to find the cache.  Plus you can log a fieldnote if you find or DNF (did no find) the cache.  It saves that info in a .txt file so you can log your find online later.
