Bring it.  I don't have a grill and I hate cold sauasges :)  If you have room, an extra doesn't hurt, thanks

I will be cutting through the dessert on Friday morning. Randy (Randalf1) and I did this last year. We will meet some where in Joshua Tree area and head from there. We will only see about 10 miles of pavement the whole way thier. Let me know if anyone's down.

1.) Toro/Danny
2.) Knitrider/Jordan
3.) xxSVxx/Christian
4.)

This will be the staging area for the Friday morning run. Gas and snacks will be available.

We can meet up a little further west and caravan in to this spot.

Just wondering....where might the meet spot a little further west be?  I'd like to map my drive out to make sure I'm at the meet spot on time :)

The good, the bad and the ugly.

This morning I went to get a safety check and to make sure all my fluids, etc. were in order. Everything checked out perfectly (the good), except my idler arm needs to be replaced (the bad), which Calmini says they will need to order and it should arrive in 3-4 weeks (the ugly).  :(

I guess that explains the recent clunk I've been getting.... I just thought it was a t-bar issue.  Does anyone know if it is a problem making the trip with an idler arm with a lot of wobble to it?  I don't suppose there is a way to put a plate or shim in there?  Yeah, I know that's ridiculous but wishful thinking.  Hopefully I will be able to get it replaced before the run.

How does it drive now?    THE ROAD offers no real challenge unless you go looking for it like a few of us last year.  And especially if we jump out at Afton Canyon that takes away 90% of the hardship we faced last year.   But the big question is do you feel safe at freeway speeds getting there and getting home.   If not, the ugly  :D scream MOD Afternoon when you get the part and I'm sure you would have some volunteers be willing to help out.  I think we have a new credo amongst the group  WILL WORK FOR BEER     ::)

First off, I still plan to go on the trip and I am confident that the IA will arrive in time, that I will have screamed MOD DAY! COME GET THE BEER!, that everything will be fixed ahead of time, and that this will be chalked up to pre-run drama.

ETA:  I'm going to have it checked out somewhere else.  There is no wobble in the steering wheel or any shimmy in the steering.  The bushings may need to be replaced is all.  I had previously upgraded to Bandit4x4's heavy duty bronze bushings, and it may be that they need to be replaced.  I just ordered another set because I will probably need them either way.  Bandit4x4 Heavy Duty bushings

------------------
I don't notice any difference when driving at normal speeds.  When I saw the idler arm movement when it was on the rack this morning, there was about 1/4 inch play or more and was very noticeable.

If the "road" does get the best of me to where it doesn't feel safe to go freeway speeds, I can always limp home.  By then the part should be waiting for me if it doesn't show up beforehand.  The shop said the IA won't break, but I suspect they were thinking under normal circumstances.

If it does break, I wonder if it will still be drivable and/or if it will damage something else.  If it will still be drivable and won't damage anything else, then no worries.  Bring it on!  But again, I am as confident as I can be that Calmini will come through for me and will get the part to me before the run.

I wouldn't worry about it breaking.  Worn bushings just cause play, do you have an idler arm brace?

Yes, I have an idler arm brace.  The idler arm is just a piece of metal so the only way I could think that it would need to be replaced is if it was cracked or stripped in some way, which it isn't.  That's why it makes more sense that it is a worn bushing.  However, I have the upgraded heavy duty bronze bushing, but I suppose it could still get worn eventually.  My vehicle drives straight as an arrow and smooth.  When I first wrote my message this morning, I wasn't even sure what an idler arm did.  I've done a lot of research and have a much better idea now.

In the past I was once shown by a mechanic something similar to this where a part (can't remember what it was) had movement that he said was a big problem.  I took it to a different mechanic and he said that part was supposed to move.  So it sounds like I need another opinion, but I think you're right that it is play from the bushing being worn.  I'll call Calmini tomorrow to cancel or put a hold on the $300+ part that I probably don't need.  At least I am getting my drama out of the way before the trip, rather than during.

Mods can move these posts to somewhere more appropriate.... anywhere but Max Power's place.  That place is scary.

Google is your friend... :D

Idler Arm Images

Looks like an integral part of the steering for Gen 1 Xterras, and that Calmini makes a brace/upgrade from the stock mounting point.
