Rick - typically the "torch mode" is a separate input wire that will override your selected flash pattern and force the light all the way on when it receives a 12V positive input to that particular wire. So basically, you can hook up the light to flash on one switch (using the internal flasher mechanism within the light), and connect the "torch mode" wire to your brake light and/or running lights. You can engage the switch to make the light flash on the pattern you've selected, and the light will burn solid if you hit the brakes or have your headlights/running lights on. You can also install a switch on the "torch mode" wire so that it will only illuminate with your brakes/running lights when you want it to. Most of these also have a "solid on" setting within the flash patterns, so you can select that particular flash pattern and simply use it like a regular light also (but you can use the torch mode wire the same way and not even hook up the standard flash pattern wire, it's all up to you). It's a cool setup, and can be done many many different ways.
