But seriously, why didn't you choose a higher amperage unit?  250, 270?

I do think the 200amp range is all I need. I'm not running too much stuff.
I haven't had much confidence in the OE Alt because I'm replacing batteries every few years. I was looking for something new and better. $600 is a bit out of my price range so this unit fits the bill perfectly.

If I may pontificate please.  Just a few 'facts', OK, there MY facts, about batteries, amps and charging systems.

No matter how big your alternator is, it only flows enough amps  to meet your demands. (or burns up)

Different types of Batts., even of the same size, have different charging rates i,e, lead acid batts. might take 30 amps or less when charging, where a gel-cell might take 45 amps, and a glass-mat takes 70.   I say 'take', because you can't force feed a battery.  And all batts reduce that charging rate as they near full charge.
So if you are charging 3 glass mat batts that are all, over 30% drained you could pull 210 amps of charge for half an hour or so.
If you are charging 3 lead acid batts from even 40% drained they would pull 90 amps for an hour or so than taper off untill full charge.
YMMV, i kinda made up the numbers to make the point.

Big amps is a selling point but rarely used, unless you're running big glass mat batts or an arc welder.  In either case, at 250 amps,  the engine would have to be running at 3000 rpm or the  torque of the alternator would spin the belt, or would kill the engine.

180 amps is plenty of poop for recharging and running refers.  The little extra voltage that Toro is getting is nice for pushing a little more oomph in his accessories.

I welcome all your inferior comments and silly questions :D

Sorry for the Jack Toro, I meant well :-*

Yeah, I think you did perfect.  I'm on my 3rd and 4th OE alt.  I'm going to get my money back on my spare and buy the one you got.

But to answer GeoYota's question, more is not always better 8)
