Topic: Anza Borrego State Park

Hey all..

Some friends of mine and myself are camping out in Anza Borrego park this weekend, and I've been getting questions about where to wheel out there...

We are camping in Little Blair Valley....southwest corner of the park...

Any suggestions on where to go to get my wheel on?

There are a couple places I've heard in anza borrego.  I always stick to the s2, I don't like getting my truck dirty

Green and Blue mostly....I haven't personally seen the rigs I'm going to be camping with so I'm not going to assume too much...

Hey Christiaan,
Canyon Sin Nombre is a fantastic trail, and if it gets to tough it loops back the way you came.  It's about 15 miles SE of your camp off S2 and is easy to light moderate.  According to my guide book Oriflamme is a moderate trail just 2 miles east of camp.  I have not checked that one out yet.  Let me know!

Years ago, I found "Guide to Southern California Backroads and 4-Wheel Drive Trails" by Charles A. Wells. It's a great book and has turn by turn directions of trails. There are several washes near your camp that you can explore. Oriflamme and Canyon Sin Nombre have already been mentioned but there is also Sandstone Canyon and the Mud Caves trail which consists of two different washes to form a loop. I believe the washes are Arroyo Tapiado and Arroyo Seco del Diablo. Just don't take Diablo Drop off to Fish Creek Wash unless you and your group are comfortable on steep loose sand.

Like Paul said...Sandstone Canyon and Fish Creek wash are very cool.  They are on the Ocotillo Wells side of Anza Borrego, and south off of Split Mountain Rd.

Arroyo Salado and Canyon Sin Nombre are south of where you will be camping, on the east side of S2.

Drove Fish Creek Wash....and Sandstone Canyon...

Best wheeling I found was in the state park; technically called Borrego Mountain Wash, it's right below The Slot; one heck of a geology/dirt nerd place to see, FYI (The Slot)

In one week I went from never seeing it before to knowing it fairly well and where to go/what to see!!!

Wow!  I did that trail a few months ago with a bunch of built jeeps.  Only thing is we did it w/o a spotter and at night.  Couldn't see much down the trail so it was a bit freaky.  Watching this confirms the freaky part.

Awesome Max!!!  We actually found it at night....me and 2 friends in my rig....I stared at it for a good 30min....but decided to wait until the next day because it got suuuper hairy in a couple places when my whole rear end seemed to be off the ground....

So exhilarating!!
