Rotopax thoughts?
« on: March 06, 2013, 04:21:18 PM »
I am thinking about getting one of these, a jeep down the street has a couple mounted to his spare and they seem pretty awesome.

Anyone have one or have experience with them?

I've seen them but haven't met anyone that has one first hand...

Very interested to hear how much they hold, how easy they are to attach...etc.

Excellent quality...at a price.

The spare tire holder unit with cans and attachments is close to $450 for spare tire/strap mounted with two 3 gallon cans.

I just ordered the spare tire strap mount set from Rebel Off Road.

No one else, not even Rotopax had this in stock.

Talk to Gabe, he will take care of you.  He is an FJ Cruiser guy, and a member of the SoCal FJ Cruiser Club/Forum.

They are in Laguna Hills area.

Going to order the Rotopax cans from Off Road Performance Parts, and grab the 3 gallon size for each side of this tire mounted carrier.  The owner is an SCCX member, so want to support him as well!!

I bought a couple 4 gal rotopax on black Friday for buy one get one free,  I've used them once so far and will be bringing them to the Mojave run.  I like the flat design and just throw them up on the roof, works great

I want to rig up a mount of some sort to mount it between the spare tire mount and trunk.

Thanks for the link Frank, that is giving me some ideas.

Here are some of my concerns. I want to keep the spare tired pressed against the hoop of the mount to keep it in place and to not have all that weight hanging further out from the mount. If I put the cans behind the tire like Bobby did it would move the tire that much further away.
I would like to be able to get to the gas independently of the spare. So many possibilities.  ;D

Yea I agree with you.  They almost fit between the carrier and the hatch but not much clearance.

I like the rack mounted ideas, with one thought to consider.  With placement of the tire farther out, it decreases the departure angle.  One solution is to mount the tire higher, which then obstructs rear view.

Seems like mounting opinions are like belly buttons (thx Toro)...everyone's got one.  :)

Jordan...are these heavy/difficult to lift onto the roof when full?

Looks like the average weight for a gallon of gas (depending on temperature, colder = denser, more weight) is between 5.8 and 6.25 lbs.

4 gallons = between 23.2 lbs. and 25 lbs.  Doesn't seem like it would be too bad.

No its not too bad, the length helps as you can just slide it up on to the roof.  Depending if I have other things on the roof I carry them either laying down flat or standing up on the long edge on either side of the roof. The latter way helps to contain firewood stacked on the roof.

Like John said, they're nice, but come with a price.
They don't weigh much when full.  Any avg. guy can handle them.  More so if you're a he-man woman-hater!   (from The Little Rascals).  ;-)

I've been running these for a long time now and they've been fine.  Not revolutionary or anything, but I'm happy with them.  It weighs more for 4 gallons of water than four gallons of gas more so because you have more bul/material for two separate cans instead on one flow-through fuel can.  They do vent up and bulge more than my NATO cans, so you might want to be wary of running them less than full; keeps the amount of vapor down as opposed to liquid.

I only moved the spare tire out the thickness of the can.  On one side it slides up and out and the other I can pull out sideways.  Nothing impedes access to anything else nor does any one thing have to be moved to access another.

As for departure angle, my spare is so high off the ground that it really hasn't mattered and it will matter even less with the 35s.

I have modified the water cans, though.  I drilled the sides top and bottom to add a drain and vent.  After adding a screw on hose fitting, they now have an easy on/off place to draw water, wash hands, head, etc.

FYI if you want to pick up a spare spout/gasket, skip the $10+ ones sold at the sites.  Go to Pep Boys or the like and just get one over by the water jugs -- it's the same sceptor spout but they sell it for $4.99.
I like sammiches.  And bacon.  Sammiches with bacon.  And chips.  Lots of chips.

Great idea on the drilled water cans.

BTW - took delivery of my rotopax gas cans. They are very stout.  Waiting for the deluxe handles to arrive and I will mount up and take a few shots.

That Reliance Rhino is nice. Probably could fab a on/off valve pretty easy.
