you also have to factor in getting the gps receiver for the 710, HRO sells a little gps that connects to the back of the 710 faceplate, or go the lowrance route and actually be able to see where people are on a map.

ive been looking at getting a cable that will output locations of stations on a garmin gps unit that i have had laying around with no use for.

ive also looked at switching to the 710 since the support  for it is alot better

another dedicated gps display for aprs is the avmap geosat 6 $499
http://www.avmap.us/products/terr/geosat_6_aprs-664/introduction-en-us
which works better with the 710 than it would with my ftm-350ar

The dedicated apes screens are cool but lot as usefully for off road navigation IMHO

Lol the hds12 would be Rad! Only problem is finding a place for it in your rig. Of would take up some Realestate!

The larger hds's  have more features too.like a PDF reader and video input. I think the PDF reader would be cool to have factory service manuals and Ham radio manuals available.

The HDS 5M goes for $549
https://ruggedrocksoffroad.com/lowrance-m-482.html

I haven't gotten aprs hooked up yet but I'll be doing so very soon.
I have Hds 5m in the pathfinder and have been testing the upcoming map cards.
I know that set aprs up and it works just fine. it does what it's suppoed to.

I really wish there was a way to use my android phone as the display, I've got a radio that mirrors my phone to the 7" screen in the dash and "aprsdroid" app that uses the internet to display contacts, the app supports Bluetooth connections but the Bluetooth module for my ham radio only supports headsets, no serial :(

Doesn't your radio have a data Jack on the back? Almost looks like a s-video plug?

that it does, 8 pin mini din with rs-232 data and packet data for a external tnc. my ultimate goal is to have a wireless connection to my phone so no extra wires other than the micro usb charging cable. i dont know if that would be easier and cheaper through a bluetooth rs-232 adapter, or a bluetooth enabled tnc.

If you're going to have it plugged in anyways.. why not connect to the tnc and charge with USB? 2 birds one stone.

Well my phone is plugged into my stereo for the display mirroring/charging. So any other connections have to be wireless.  Im going to try a serial rs232 adapter since that's the cheaper option.  If that doesn't pan out then I'll try a tnc with Bluetooth.

What sucks about the ftm-350 is it doesn't allow incoming packets, only outgoing, so no message sending from the android app over rf.

Why not use a USB hub?

Since the phone is sending video its in mhl mode which is using the USB port as an HDMI output, so other USB functions like serial connections and mass storage access is disabled through the USB.
