The first plan was to cut/unbolt pieces off the car...but as we did this, and when we winched the roof off, the whole car moved...and we thought, "Why not??"  Keep in mind, we cut the roof off, removed the trunk lid, seat frame, and dug out/threw out several hundred pounds of accumulated rocks/rat droppings/sticks/trash etc. before winching up the hill.

Randy adjusting the valves...we attempted to remove the cylinder heads, but that proved too difficult.  We did remove the drivers side suspension, but then realized we could pull the hulk up with two winches

Damn that is really great you guys.   What Fantastic work.

Now we need finish this off.  Does anybody have access to a flatbed trailer large enough to hold this thing?   Or do we need to further dissect this thing to get it off the mountain.

where it sits now, which i dont know if John got a picture of, the corner of the rear bumper is at the edge of the road.  we could use a flatbed tow truck.  it could pull right up, angle the bed down, and winch that sucker up onto it.   the last few feet were the hardest, and i think its because of the low angle we were pulling it at.  i dont know how we could go about fixing that.  we also had issues of the trucks sliding, so maybe tying off to another xterra behind the one winching might have helped.

I have access to flatbed trailers, but I don't see how we can get it on and off w/o tearing the crap out of the deck.

When ever there was heavy lifting or dirty digging to do, John was always there.... with his camera, watching ;)
He said that I would thank him later, and he's right.  Thank John for the great photos.   We all got plenty tired and dirty.  It was a great day doing a good thing on a beautiful day with great guys.
The broken cable on my winch was mostly due to my ignorance of clutch settings.  I will have time to study this more while repairing my winch :P

Which repair is confusing. I broke mine. Replaced the broken parts. Still doesn't work.

I have been talking to Danny Bogner a full time AAT volunteer up there, and I would like to include the text of his emails.  Very interesting with some options:

#1:
Terry if you need to pull/drag it out to the road I'll volunteer my 5 ton military to pull it, but I'm busy all weekend working on other AAT and OHV stuff. It can be pulled to the road and you would be surprised as to how fast it will disappear, scrappers will make it it go away . Feel free to call me if you want to talk about it

#2:
Got ya Terry,  if you have it out to the pavement I'm sure it will disappear.  Been there done that with several vehicles in pieces or burnt and they last a couple days at the most and are picked up by either scrappers or the CHP if they are on public roads. Good luck and good work

Danny

#3:   (We are getting some air time)
Yea I talked to Greg this morning at the Discovery Center and he said you sent some pics and that it's the 1 you guys recovered down by 2N70Y but there is another 1 back towards Baldwin that's WAY down the side and several times people have tried to bring it up with no success. If it's still on dirt where they pulled it out it needs to go down hill another mile or 2 on to BLM land to be picked up by scrappers.  We should talk about it

Danny

#4:
The big concern is what drops out of the car while being towed so it's important to having rigs following to pick up anything that falls of while being towed including nuts and bolts anything that can puncture a tire. That road is hard enough that it won't be abused probably won't even see any marks.
I'm busy this weekend with 2 different projects tomorrow I will be on the F.S. dozer the SWECO Sunday I have an OHV volunteers patrol and have to  cut and remove 3 trees that are blocking 2 different trails, but you free to pull it and I can try to send you a Google Earth location where we have dropped several cars before that disappeared within a week
Danny

#5:
Hi Terry here's the best I can do with a map from Google Maps of where the best place to drop the Olds is, the "A" is about the start of 2N70Y and the "B" is at Viscera Springs road which is an intersection where we have left several cars in the past few year and they disappear in a few days and it's on BLM land. I sent it to myself to see if the link works.

Good luck with it and I might be able to help next weekend but the issue is that if somebody drives by it might end up back down the hill, cause that's what we deal with dealing with the public on their way back to Big Bear from Pioneer Town after a day at Pappy and Harriets after a few adult beverages

So looks like we have some big help it we need it and  all we need to do is pull it 2-2.5 miles and it will disappear by magic.

That's great news Terry, well done.  I free next Tuesday again if anyone is interested.  If I don't get my winch fixed by then, I can still be dead weight tied to someone's rear bumper. :'(

My plan is to talk Lava into bring his 1 Ton trailer, I can bring wrenches and a saw.  The more winches the better.  Separate the engne if we have to and haul everything to the "drop off" spot for the scrappers.  Leave Temecula area about 9am to let traffic settle a bit.
