Just got the following email from Greg Hoffman:   (I would like to get ideas from everyone regarding dates and participation.  There is a great group campground right on 2N01  just off of highway 38 that could accommodate at least 8 rigs camping and throw in a couple RV's if we want).
So your comments are appreciated

That sounds good.  I say we camp when it gets above 50* ;D
I would still like to get that old trashed car up and out of there.

Very ambitious Duffman.   I like it, now if we could get the equipment together to do that.

I'm suspecting that the campgrounds won't be open til May anyway.

I have given the car situation a lot of thought and I have a plan.

Cool.   A plan is really really good.   I wonder what the scrap metal value of that thing would be.   May offset some cost.

That torch and a couple winches, maybe a few poly drums we can cut in half to place under the axles to make sliding the hulk up the hillside then we can throw pieces of it on my 1 ton trailer b4 I turn it into a camper, aka the TerraPod.
My other vehicle is an X-WING

Wow I'm impressed with the equipment we have.   If I remember this thing is actually sitting on a field of rocks, so fire danger should be diminished somewhat from the use of torches.   I was thinking of a large gas powered circular saw maybe to get quickly through the sheet metal.

Toro did your plan include fire too?

I think we have enough winches between us all to move the mountain.   The only issue we need to worry about is the length of time we block the road to get these pieces out.    I believe there is an area to park down the road, then we could cut and move rigs into place, pull the piece out, open the road, then cut some more.   Rinse and repeat.

Think we need to plan a quick run to get all the brains together for further strategy.   And we can make some real fun out of this effort with the AAT offer for a group campground for us to make a fun weekend of it.

So lets see who might be interested in:

  • Making a quick run in the next couple of weeks to further scope out the car situation
  • Would be interested in a camping weekend to work on the car
  • What would be possible summer weekends to do this, considering all the conflicts us active Southern Californians are going to have

Thanks
Terry

IIRC...there was a trail below as well...maybe cut and pull down, rather than up?

Also...saving a couple of cool cosmetic parts to use/serve/weld/sculpt as an SCCX monument for marking the trail might be a cool idea?

I'd like to help too...LMK.

No fire on the trail. That will defiantly put a lot at risk.
One harnessed, "Trained"  person repel down to the car. Secure it with winch lines from 2 rigs above.
At JV, my winch Dead lifted a Gen 1 X about 30ft up a wall to a clearing above. Two 12k winches will do with out unnecessary time over the edge. (Me and Terry)
We will need a third winch to secure the vehicle off a snatch block while the lifting winches reposition.
The trailer rig will be positioned and carcus pulled up onto the trailer.
The key will be obtaining permission to close the trail. Having Ham radio operators at the bottom of Burns Canyon, Rattle Snake ,Yucca (Pioneer Town)  and Big Bear will be key. We can communicate by repeater.
I have maps and have thought this through.
Perhaps Ranger Greg has someone in his arsenal that is experienced and can go over the edge.
