Does this look like it might be taking shape? I'd be glad to plan for the event.

I actually started this as a feeler for next year. There is quite a bit of prep and organization to make it happen and I don't have the time to put it together for this year being field day is in 2 weeks. However. I believe there are a few other radio clubs that will be operating the weekend of the john bull run.
There may be some opportunity to drop by their camp to see how it all works before we go full bore.
I'm very familiar with what's needed to make it happen and I'm looking forward to getting it all together and teaching those that have never done it.

Just to give an idea, we would need to plan what antenna were going to use, what radios, how we would put up the antennas and how we would power the radios for 24 hours straight. As well as computers for logging contacts.

Now that I'm thinking about this more I think those that are interested should drop by a field day site this year just tonget a feel for how it all works. Clubs are usually welcoming to visitors to their site and usually love getting more people involved in radio.. And it doesn't hurt that they get extra points for visitors.
Neck maybe I'll jump on a radio and make a few contacts if they let me. :)

Sounds like a really good idea, this way we could get setup for next year. Maybe practice a bit on the various runs with setting up antennas and such? I've been really studying antennas lately trying to not only figure out the best configuration for my house but to get a really decent mobile setup that doesn't require too much gear. I remember seeing a offroad rype radio shop on the way out of Big Bear a few weeks ago but didn't have the time to stop. I would venture to guess that they might be operating a site there or will for sure know where some of the sites up there are. I have access to a portable generator so keeping everything powered up might not be too difficult.

Setting up a radio on various trips to the mountains this summer sounds like a good idea. I can unload some knowledge next time I see you as well pertaining to home antenna choices.

And surprisingly I'm actually nor familiar with the radio shop you mentioned.  I'll have to keep an eye out. Also all registered field day sites are at the link in my last post so maybe we can drop by one of those if we don't get info elsewhere

I believe this is an annual June event.  So you will need to wait until next year.

Yeah, it's late June every year. The main objective is to create a day (or weekend) with as many ham stations as possible contacting one another. Some clubs/groups create social events and/or contests around it as well. Here's some more info:

Glad to be of help with my technical prowess. The only other one that has vastly superior communications expertise to mine is Jayrats son with his Incredible Hulk walkie talkies.
