Mojave Road 04.17 - 04.19.2015
« on: October 27, 2014, 10:21:04 PM »
Time to start planning this trip. We are 6 months out and want to put this together.
I want to make this a 3 day trip at a more relaxed pace. We will be running East to West beginning at the Avi Casino.

Head to Laughlin on Thursday the 16th. Stay at hotel/camp. Hit the road Friday the 17th. Camp Friday and Saturday  night along the road. Finish road on Sunday the 19th. No real wheeling, just a desert trip and camping through a historical, 120 mile, desert road.
We would be starting in Laughlin, at the AVI Casino, on the morning of the 17th and head west towards I-15. Camp Phallus the first night and Hole in the wall, Camp Mojave or Beal Mt on Saturday night. We can take a vote but I think I'd like to end it at Afton Canyon and avoid the "Mojave River".
This is stock (running boards and mud flaps style) and family friendly.

If I don't have your cell, please PM it to me

Due to permits for large groups, this run is capped at 15 vehicles and 30 people.

Life happens and people always cancel. If you have interest in this run, get added to the stand by list. Odds are, someone's gold fish will die or inlaws will show up for the weekend.
We will not run a second smaller group to circumvent the permit. I'm on the hook and held responsible with the Mojave National Preserve and don't want to poke a bear.

The AVI Casino is located at

10000 Aha Macau Pkwy,
Laughlin, NV 89029

We will meet in the parking to get together and meet and great. There is a gas station and a convenience store in the parking lot of the AVI. Ice, gas, snacks and beer will be available.
I would like to roll out at 1100 at the latest.  Please be gassed up and ready to roll around 1030. It will take time to get a group this big going. Then we have to account for the buried phone.

Things you need to have or be aware of and required.
-5 good tires.
-Rig in good working condition. Check all your fluids and spot check your belts and hoses
-Working 4wd
-At least 1 spare tire with in 2" in size to the tires on your rig. No Doughnuts.
-A Jack that can alow you to change a tire in uneven ground
-A CB Radio. (plenty of time to get one)

-Dogs are more than welcome but please keep them on a leash while out and about.

-Enough fuel to travel 200 miles in 4wd
-Minimum 1 Gallon of water per person per day
-Tow strap
-If you air down, be prepared to refill
-Basic tools
-Sanitation supplies for camping. If your digging holes, bring your own shovel. Bio-Degradable TP
-First Aide Kit

-We will pack out all trash and leave nothing behind (except for underground poo)
-Bring trash bags for yourself.

-Temperatures in the Desert can vary. Be prepared for anything. The higher elevations can be down right freezing and the lowers can easily reach 120 in the summer.
-You will have to take a dump at some point so plan ahead and dont wait till the last min.

-What ever you need to camp comfortably
-Bring enough batteries and memory for cameras
-Binoculars
-Wide brimmed hat
-Flashlights, lantern
-Good walking shoes
-A camping chair and somewhere to prop your feet will be nice
-GPS. Hand held or carmount
-Books or maps of trail/road

We will be on the road for the better part of three days. Please plan your meals accordingly. Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks.
If your not a camper and would like some advice please PM me for my little tricks.

We will be swinging three potlucks this time.
Friday night
Saturday morning
and
Saturday nighy

A good reference guide is a good idea. I like and use,

this version is limited on the Mojave Rd but has enough the be helpful

Comm's
Please remember to pick up a CB. I will not be doing FRS. We will communicating 100% by CB. Ham radio will only be used to talk isht about those with out Ham radio's . With a group this size, Ham will be used to have solid Comm's btwn lead and tail....and god forbid, in case of emergency. There are many reasonable options available.

This is my set up...and it's awsome.

Opinions on CB's are like belly buttons. Everyone's got one.

We will be working CB channel 17 and 2m simplex 146.535

points of interest

This trip destroys in cabin filters. The fine sand of the Mojave gets into everything.  Please consider changing your filter before and after the trip.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D566IG/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_gMMktb1SK8DPA
These have less pleats than the OE filter so it won't last as long...but at these prices, that's okay.

We will be hauling out ALL trash. If you have a tire carrier you might want to consider a Trasharoo.
http://trasharoo.3dcartstores.com/
These guys keep the trash out of your rig. Keeps the smell out and frees up precious cargo space.

If your running an oiled cone filter, consider running a dry pre-filter. The fine sand will get stuck to the filter and and start sucking down the MPG's even further.
 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001034E6W/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_EZMktb18JKRHK
This particular one is for 9" base and 7" top diameters. This will only alow the finest of sand to get through. Find what works for yours and give it shot. It will pay for itself on this one trip.

Pot Luck and other stuff..........

We will be on the road for two nights and we will eat like kings. The meals will be themed but believe me, all grub is welcomed. There will be three separate chances to binge.

Friday night one will be Mexican-ish.

Saturday Morning Breakfast.

Saturday Night two will be Italian-esk.

Sunday Morning...everyone on there own.

We have all learned form recent and previous trips that the deversity of grub is what makes these a blast. Please chime in if there is anything you would like to bring and share with the group.
    Choose a day and let-r-rip.

Night 1 - Friday....................................................

We will be grilling Ranchera (the good stuff) it's about $6/lb. if you would like to contribute, 3lb's I would be happy to purchase and haul it out there.

All are invited Steve.

If we go west to east, night 1 will be where we normally camp and night 2 will be north of the trail. Somewhere new....not sure yet.
We would end up in Laughlin on night 3.
Heading East to West, night 1 would be in a new location and night 2 would be In the usual spot.

Count me in along with the wife. My preference is the traditional east to west route, since I'd rather make the trip out to Laughlin the first day and end the trip closer to home on the final day. But I'm perfectly fine with whatever everyone else wants.

Hey that sounds fun either way.   Might be nice to end at Laughlin though...    Shower, nice meal, gambling, soft bed at the end of the run.   Hm.. ;D

IN  **+1**

I would vote for East to West only because the drive home is long enough after being behind the wheel all weekend long

(wishful thinking, but better to be safe than sorry!)
