Stump Pulling Power
« on: March 14, 2009, 09:25:55 PM »
Last week I was dropping my wife off at the temple and the monks had themselves a problem. They were trying to remove two pretty big trees to make room for new construction. They had dug out the root ball of the trees but couldn't get them to fall and had no idea how they were going to get the root ball out.

I've got an idea I said!  ::)

They had some scrap cargo straps. These things were likely rated about 5,000 pounds or a bit more brand new. I put one though the d-ring of the tail hook and linked them together in a line long enough so that the falling tree wouldn't hit the truck. I put a heavy wool blanket on the line ... and it worked as I ended up snapping two of the straps. I wanted to test the ShrockWork's rear bumper under a non-critical load and get a feel for tugging a heavy load.

Pulling this lump out once I'd pulled the tree over was the hardest part as the ball caught the sides of the hole. This was the only time I had to put it into 4WD low.

The smaller tree with a monk trimming the fruits of my labor. The truck is in park - no tension on the line here.

So that was my good deed for the week. Good karma for sure! The monks thanked me on the spot and called again a couple days later with another round of thanks.

That's great Paul! We're actually doing the same thing at the moment... but on a much smaller scale.

The Xterra has proved its worth again... "...a million uses and counting."

Definitely more good karma on your way. Buddha is smiling down on you...

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst!

Yeah one of the monks shot some hand-held video but I haven't seen it yet.
