As of right now, I will be down for a friday exploration as well! Unless something changes...count me in on that Convoy!

"Was the dark of the moon on the sixth of june
 In a kenworth pullin' logs
Cab-over pete with a reefer on
 And a jimmy haulin' hogs
We is headin' for bear on i-one-oh
'bout a mile outta shaky town
I says, "pig pen, this here's the rubber duck.
"and i'm about to put the hammer down."

I can't freaking wait. This trip is going to be so epic. My bro and I will be leaving early on Friday, probably as soon as the morning commuter traffic dies down (8:00 or 9:00 am). We're going to stop at the old abandoned Boron State Prison to explore a little on the way out. If anyone else coming from SoCal wants to caravan up there and wants to join us for the exploration, let me know.

If we leave the Inland Empire area around 9:00 am and explore the prison area for ~2 hours, we'd be getting into Panamint Springs resort around 3:00 pm.

Been to Boron...awesome place.

Can you set a meet spot so we can coordinate commute times from San Diego/Oceanside/Hemet/Mira Mesa, etc.?

Well shoot... it looks like we've got quite a bit of interest in a Friday fun-day before the official start of the trip. I'll start a new thread so we don't muddy this one up.

Edit: looks like you guys beat me to it  8)

posted by Hi Desert Warrior yesterday at 1 pm in the saline valley preservation forum

"I just called the Inyo road dept.
They advised that Saline Valley North Road is closed and may not be open for another three weeks.
No more info, other than that"

That would put its opening around the 22nd of October.
That is good for the exit

.
But we are still waiting on the Big Pine Rd to open from Crankshaft junction to the Crater Mine (Sulphur).
This allows travel from Ubehebe Crater up to crankshaft junction and over to Eureka Dunes(night 2 campspot).

Keep your fingers crossed :)

Or this route.... IF... Big Pine is closed between Crankshaft junction and S Eureka dunes road.

This is the only Closed road that would affect us given today's information about the Northern exit and its opening date.

This route would take us up and down Lippencott mine road and

"T-bone Ribeye" posted this 5 hours ago on Saline Valley preservation
http://forum.salinepreservation.org/post/lippincott-road-6700262?trail=30

"2 gents and myself from SLO county came down Lippincott Wednesday and found the road to be in good shape.
No problem for a stock Tundra 4by and FJC.  We had never driven Lippincott before and found it to be much easier than  feared.
That road has haunted me for decades and after coming over Hunter Mountain for the first time (stops at Hunter Cabin, J.O. Mine, and Lost Burro) we stayed in Homestake Dry Camp Tuesday night.

The descent went smoothly with plenty of road in the nasty bits and no need for any spotting.
We continued on to the Springs on great South Pass road and stayed the night.

Wind shredded my 16' Noah's tarp  yesterday morning so we opted to forgo further sand eating and headed back to the coast.
New Pelican cooler was money."

For those that are trying to wrap their heads around what is where and what is closed or what is possible.

I made this conceptual map. Not to scale :)
