Topic: Trasharoo questions

Hello everyone,

I'm seriously considering buying a trasharoo before the Mojave trip, but time is ticking. I don't have a tire carrier and was wondering if anyone has any experience using one without strapping it to a tire? My goal is to get smelly garbage out of the inside of the rig.

I saw Motorpig77 had one strapped to the tailgate of his Frontier and I've seen a few other people do that as well. But I'm wondering if I could make it work with a full rear hatch somehow. Maybe run the straps around the hatch similar to the way it's done on a tailgate? Or attach them to my rear lightbar mount on the roof and down around the bumper somehow (less desirable, because it would require removing it to open the hatch)? The straps probably aren't long enough for either option, but I could always run to the local surplus store and grap some more strapping and buckles to extend them if needed.

why not strap it to the roof?

i doubt you'll be using all of your space up there and with a few straps/tie downs, that thing will fit just fine up there...

The straps are pretty long, but not long enough to go around the whole hatch, you could probably get an extension made with buckles to make it work on the hatch, or ghetto rig it with rope between the buckles

Isn't there someone with an Xterra who has a bunch of stuff strapped to his hood in canvas pouches, sort of like the old Land Rovers in Africa or something?  I can't remember who it is, but recall seeing a photo someplace.  Anyway, maybe you could adapt that idea and mount it to your hood?  Of course, all that heat could be problematic.

 Why not let it hang loose off the rack on the side and right before you take off pull it up and bungee it in place so it won't slide off. You should be able to leave the straps on it and loose. Should solve the problem of being able to easily access it and also will keep it stored away while driving.

Trasharoo arrived yesterday and I had a chance to install it today. For those of you without a tire carrier and wanting one for yourselves, the new ones do come with straps long enough to go around the entire hatch. I was prepared to rig up some extensions, but I couldn't believe how long these suckers were once I extended them. There is still easily another foot or so that I cinched back up.

I had to take the buckles off to feed the straps through the small opening at the top of the hatch, but that didn't take but a few minutes to take both of them off and put them back on. It's VERY snug on the back, especially once the tailgate is closed. Note that the last photo was taken before the straps were tightened (and they can still loosen up a good deal more in that pic).

Looks awesome, and it sounds like it's secure enough: maybe to try filling it up with some heavy stuff and see how much it moves during transport, but that's gotten me thinking of getting my own sometime down the line.

One plus is that it looks like the bottom of the Trasharoo sits nicely on the rear bumper when the hatch is closed, so that's some extra stability for the bag.

That canvas to clear coat contact can't bee a good thing.

Maybe a fairly thin mat/piece of rubber attached to the entire backside of the bag would help? Not sure how feasible it is or how it would attach properly, but it would help keep the bag from sliding around theoretically, and should be a bit nicer to the paint.

I was also a little worried about the paint, but it's honestly on there very tight and doesn't move even a bit. I've seen people strap them to their tailgates a lot and have seen stories from people online who kept them strapped to their tailgate for hundreds and hundreds of miles with no scratches or any kind of damage. So I'm not really that concerned anymore.
