Mojave Rd. (Winter version)
« on: May 02, 2015, 03:51:44 AM »
Was thinking about setting up a Mojave Rd trip for this upcoming winter (Maybe Jan-Feb) running West to East last night everyone could spend a night relaxing in a casino in Laughlin. I was thinking the river crossings and the lake bed might be a possible issue, so I would rather get those or any potential problems out of the way as soon as possible. I would like to keep it a small amount of trucks so we wouldn't have to worry about permits, but if this gets traction, I would entertain a larger group (As long as Fire Jenga is involved and you know who you are). I'd like to cover a lot of ground each day with planned stops like the Bus, Mailbox and that crazy ghost town (If there are any breakdowns we can always blame them on our resident Canadian). If anyone is interested let me know and we can get some traction on this and make it happen (The fireworks show would have to be hosted by the resident "PP" license plate holder of course moderated by Motorpig). I love the desert in the winter and it would be a fantastic run I'm thinkin. Giddy up................

I am up for it.  Depending on the timing, my wife could come as well.  She is a teacher, so Christmas break (3 week window) she could go.

West to east sounds fun and the cool weather also sounds appealing.

If you get lucky with the weather, you might see some of the white stuff

How many days are you thinking, Celt?

I was thinking maybe 3 nights like we did the last time with the last night being in Laughlin if folks wanted to stay. Probably that first night at the campground west of the water crossings so folks could have plenty of time to get in and get some rest.

The Un-Official list of interested folks, if you plan on bringing family or others please post up as depending upon the size we may have limitations. This will be a family friendly trip although "Fire Jenga" and other shenanagens are standard SOP. Dates are Jan 15th,16th,17th 2016. You can mix and match up whichever group as you wish to jump in with as long as you get the Trail Leaders approval and one group doesn't not go over the allotted 15 vehicles. Jayrat graciously volunteered to herd cats for me on the run. Is there anyone who will volunteer as a mid-gunner?

 Blue Team:
1. Celt (Beer snob)+ Wife to keep me in line during Fire Jenga.
2. Chimpanzee aka The Boy (With his Jeep and Grandpa)
3. Green Goon (Thread jack co-conspirator)
4. Jayrat (Canadian to blame everything on....... and Blue Team Cat Herder) +1 and ??
5. Pyrofox79 +1 (Celt's desert running dog)
6. Mark 1107 and Nia (Because they can..)
7. PainRoller Mike and Barb (Fresh meat)
8. Ultrapac 40(Oz) +1
9. Duffman and Nilda (Psssttttt Duffman, this ain't CANVAZ) definite maybe.... shesh.

Red Team:

1. Sage Bromax (Red Team Leader)
2. Nasty Jeep Danny +2...
3. DanyX
4. ShanleX
5. Alex
6. JVR +1
7. Lemans (4 Runner)
8. ScubaDale713

Put me on that unofficial list for now as well.

If you're looking to mix things up a bit, I've been doing a ton of research on the entire Mojave Preserve over the past few weeks and have found some pretty awesome spots to go check out. The only one that is remotely close to the Mojave road is the abandoned open-pit cinder mine that the FJ club was headed to after the Lava Tubes last time. Based on what I've seen, it's definately worth going to!

There is also another awesome area just outside of Cima known as the Death Valley Mine and Dawson's Camp. It was in operation as recently as the 40s and 50s, and seems to be still very intact with several buildings, a large metal headframe over the mine shaft, and abandoned trucks and equipment all around the site. This would be about a 20 or 30 minute drive from the Camp Mojave site we stayed at on the second night last time (the fireworks spot). Could make for a nice first stop on the second day if you planning on camping at that same spot on the first night.

I was actually thinking about doing one last quick trip out there before the weather gets too hot this year. I was thinking about the weekend after Mother's day, because there'll be no moon again and it'll make for some wicked night photography again, but that date is rapidly approaching so It might have to be a weekend or two later. I wanted to make it a short two-day trip with one night out there, and I've even put together a little agenda of the places I want to see and might have found a nice camping spot. I would come in to the preserve off of Kellbaker Road from Baker and wouldn't hit dirt until well into the middle of the preserve (just for time's sake). I haven't posted anything about it yet, because I was waiting to gauge some interest at the mod day at Duff Man's house next weekend. It'll be more of a destination-oriented trip, with the goal of hitting up as many of these amazing historic sites as possible.

My kids were pretty crushed when we skipped the Lava tubes and I want to give them that experience. We've been thinking about an overnighter to that area again.

Keep me posted on this. Summer will be hit or miss for me, but I should free up in the fall. I'm sure you weren't thinking about a desert trip in the summer anyways.

Celt... Put me down on the interested list for your trip...

And... Thread hijack in progress...

Joe and/or Danny, an overnighter in the next couple weeks would be a great idea! I was considering it myself but there is always more safety in numbers! We should plan a date!
