Topic: Mojave Rd. (Winter version)

Since I'll be missing this trip now, I want to throw out my suggestion that I was going to make in person - just beyond the Lava tubes is the Aiken Cinder Mine, and it's AWESOME. I led a small group around the Mojave Preserve last year and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting this site. There's tons of old equipment you can play around on, and many great photo opportunities. You just go about another 2 miles up the road past the lava tubes. You should have plenty of time to hit the tubes and the mine before heading to the first camp site of the night, especially if you're entering the preserve off of Kellbaker road if the Mojave River is too deep to cross. Just a suggestion.

Hey guys, I'm looking at different cargo carrying options...I have a hitch mounted basket that comes up to about bumper level.  Will I have enough clearance for the trip?

I'd be worried about how much that basket would rattle when driving at speed off-road.

You should be ok with the departure angle, not that being said you still would need to be mindful of what your backside is doing.

Having that out back will be a lever on your rear suspension. Heavy things out there + a load in the rig will sag/destroy an OE suspension. I would not recommend a loaded cooler out there.

Agreed.  Roadworthy maybe, but this type of travel (130 miles of off road dirt) will take it's toll on that hitch mounted device.

Yep - us too.  Flying to Portland Sunday for work.  But didn't want to cancel this trip completely.  Huge thanks for accommodating our plan needs, ultrpc40!   

Can't wait to try out the new Roof rack and sleeping bags we got for Christmas!  Woot!
