Tell tale signs a Xterra is acutally an "Off-Road" and not a poser
« on: September 14, 2015, 09:57:49 PM »
Just curious but I was wondering if there is ways to tell if an Xterra is actually an Off Road model and not a poser. The Xterra I am looking at is a 2005 SE but on the doors it has Off-Road. I have tried looking around on the net and seeing if there is ways of reading the VIN but no luck.

Thank you for you help.

The most sure way would be the presence of the e-locker.  I don't think (but I could be wrong) that the SE had it.  No e-locker means definitely not an OR.

I recall people posting on thenewx about adding Off-Road badges to their S trim trucks.

Frank,

So it it has a toggle/button next to the 2wd/4wd selector saying "rear" and showing a layout of the drive wheels that is the e-locker correct?

yes it will have a button next to the 4wd knob that has shows the 4 wheels and has an "X" over the rear dif.  Only offroad/Pro4x models were available with the e locker.  sometimes the internets will show it as an SE or other. e-locker switch tells the truth.

Sweet. I am going to check out this 05 then. It has just above 103K, I know I should check the radiator for the degrading of the transmission lines or total fail of them.

Is there anything else I should be on the look out for on an 05 Xterra?

Not only would I check to see if there is contamination, I would try to find out if the radiator has been replaced for the newer version.  If it appears there is contamination, I would walk away.  If there's a milkshake in the rad, then it's already too late and the damage has been done.  If it's good, I would immediately bypass, if you can't confirm it's new rad.

There are different part numbers, but I'm not sure what they are.  I think I've seen them posted on the NewX, you could probably find them with a quick search.
