Plan is to be packed and rolling by 1100. I do take it that at least a few of you will be found looking outdoorsy in the shady hotel bar sometimes after 1800? Its MFk'in Pre-Thursday troops!

Just go walkin around the casino carryin a 6-pack of PBR. That will attract the guys like a buncha pit bulls to a Chihuahua with a pork chop tied around it's neck runnin through the ghetto.

If I remember correctly, didn't Jayrat show up around midnight last year and sleep in his rig in the parking lot of the Avi? That's always an option for the overnight arrivers too. But yeah, Harrah's at Laughlin is so dang cheap, it's almost a no brainer.

I got something to do last minute so I'm leaving friday morning by 6am. Hoping to get there by 10 or 1030.

If someone *cough* Randy or *cough* Joe could bring a few of those little plastic chingaderas that hold the grill in...that would be fabulous...lost 2 while in Escondido Monday night  =/

I'd love to, but I still don't know what box they're packed away in following the move. I'll do my best to find a couple before I hit the road tomorrow.

The wife and I should be hitting the road about 1:30 pm. Wanted to start much earlier and spend the day exploring on the way out, but work and handing our son off to his grandparents thwarted those plans. Should be in Laughlin around 6:00 pm (still planning to stop in Amboy for a Route 66 root beer). I'll be monitoring SCCX Simplex 146.535 all the way out there and will hail my call sign every now and then, just in case anyone else is near by.

Jayrat - just be aware, Route 66 is still shut down from Kelbaker Road (east of Amboy) to Fenner due to some major flooding that took place out there during summer of 2014. Dozens of bridges washed out and the county of San Bernardino is really dragging their feet on getting everything repaired. For that stretch, you'll have to take Kelbaker Road up to the 40, and then you can get back off of the 40 in Fenner and continue on the 66. It's not far out of the way, but unfortunately you'll miss some cool stretches of the road with a couple of cool abandoned towns. :(

So why not turn off the road and bypass the areas shut down through the open desert then get back on the road? What they don't know won't hurt you.....

In theory that would work, but the shut down portion is like 35 miles long. You can easily go around the barricades at the closure - I'm pretty sure they have it set up like that for the few locals who do live out there in Essex and for the construction crews working on the road. But I wouldn't recommend it because eventually you'll run up on crews working on the road and they'll be pretty upset. You could always go around them and go as far as you can until you come upon workers, and hopefully go around them in the open desert at that spot. Just not sure if they'd be happy about that, and/or if you'd earn yourself a traffic ticket.

There isn't much open desert out there that would allow you to bypass 35 miles of closed highway. The brush is a bit thick and there are washes and gulleys everywhere. I'm sure you could find your way through it all on some trails and blazing your own trail in places, but taking the interstate will put you in the the exact same spot in the end and won't be a hassle, just a little longer of a drive (41 miles vs. 35 if the road was open).

I'm not sure that I've ever seen Cal-Trans have the ability to issue a traffic citation. If the roadway is closed CHP will not be out there and they would have a hard time proving you drove over a barricade. Once on the closed roadway, there might be an obscure section but it would have to be proved that you were aware of the closure in the first place which would be impossible. I'm not advocating blatant disregard but what I'm saying might be a heck of a lot of fun is an overland trip away from the beaten path to get away from people which is what the majority of us on these types of runs are after. As to the roadways where they are working on them as long as you aren't messing up the work they are doing it really wouldn't matter. I'm pretty sure they would be a useful resource to find out the lay of the land ahead. I think you are over thinking this a bit and concerned about CVC rather than driving off road. In my experience, treading lightly allows for passage where most might meet resistance is met. Either way, this trip should be a heck of a lot of fun with some crazy laughs around the fires that we can all look back on in later years and wish we had the chance to do it again.......

We ran 66 in 2015 from Barstow east geocaching our way to Laughlin.

The sections of 66 that aren't shut down are rough but passable, and still really cool. (Like Joe said)  We actually aired down for most of it!
