Whats in your X?
« on: January 26, 2016, 12:50:15 PM »
Hey there! I was wondering what everyone carries in their rig on a daily basis. What is always in your X that you don't leave home with out?

Currently I carry a first aid kit, flashlight, and fire extinguisher all within arms reach. I also keep flares, tie downs, and ropes/bungees all underneath the cargo space in the back, in a sling pack that can be loaded out with anything needed to hike out of a place if the need arose. I also carry a gallon of water, blanket, and two jackets, all stashed in the back of the X. The main camp/trail kit are my two action packers. Cannot express enough how much I love these things. Even with the two strapped against the back seats I find I have ample space to load up items or sit in the back for lunch.

Nothing beats hot tea on a rainy day

At the moment I keep the two action packers filled with these. All together I'd say its about ~30lbs with both loaded up:

Looking to see what everyone else keeps in their rigs, both full time or for camp/trail specific trips. Whats in your packers?

I don't carry any camping stuff on a daily basis.  However, I have two recovery straps (one standard and one snatch), an axe and shovel under the rear seat, tire plug kit, and my soft shackles.  I have MOLLE panels on my rear hatch and rear driver's side window.  In the bags on the panels are various small handtools, several methods of lighting, some pararcord and other survival type things, and on my hatch panel is a bag with a roll of TP and a bag with sunblock and bug spray.  Of course, I have the standard first aid kit in its spot, but I've added several things to it, Israeli bandage, tourniquet, bandages, splint, etc.  I also keep a Repeater Directory miniature size book for the HAM, two FRS radios, a fire extinguisher, and probably other crap I can't think of now.  When I get packed up for the Mojave Road in April, I'll be sure to document what I pack in my boxes.  I purchased the Front Runner cub packs for use on the roof and now I realize I paid way too much and should have just purchased boxes like you have.  Either way, they'll fit perfectly on the roof rack with my Rotopax fuel containers.

The MOLLE Panels have more things on them now, this was just after I installed them.

Those MOLLE panels are awesome. I need to look into those. I have a small bag about the size of your smallest I took off of my rifle bag that I keep a couple of my tie downs/bungees in for easy access. currently I have it strapped to net on the passenger rear cargo side. A MOLLE panel would make life easier!

They definitely make life easy.  You don't have to just put MOLLE on there either.  Small lashing straps would be perfect for attaching tools, small blankets, towels, etc.  I also have two mag mount work lights hanging out on the window panel.  I'll try to remember to get some update pics and throw them on here.

Action Packers are awesome!

For day trips, we roll with 1 Action Packer (filled with recovery items).
For longer trips, we roll with all 4 Action Packers - Recovery, Camping, Pantry, and Kitchen.  These are always stored prepacked - ready to throw in the back of Pepe for either an adventure or an emergency bugout.

Here's how the panels look loaded up now. Well, not fully loaded, but they have enough stuff for now.

without going in and unpacking it all...a lot of what's been shown...I have a bug out box....and it's almost at capacity...

Flashlight with many back-up batteries....water, maps, recovery gear....chair, blankets....I just need to organize it...kind of a mish-mash right now

Thats a great Idea, I have quite a few hobbies that would benefit from this. I think I need to buy two more action packers immediately. I have quite a few hobbies that has gear that would benefit having a new home in an action packer. Think I'll get one for my range gear and one for rock climbing.

I also like the "pantry" idea, I keep throwing things into bags and smashing em haha.

All this Action Packer talk is making me want to grab one or two of them; can't decide whether to spend the time on a custom rear storage system or to just get those, ha.

link'd for your demise..I mean convenience. You could always integrate these bad boys into a drawer system where you could just swap out packers for what you are doing that day ;)

i have 4, 8 gal. action packers.  I normally travel with 2 but have expanded to 3.   One is normally cooking gear, one is recovery gear, and the 3rd is food, which used to be in the cooking box.

I am learning that I have a love hate relationship with them, they are perfect size for extending the sleeping platform inside the X, but difficult to pack in sometimes. I wish the footprint was closer in size to the top so stuff would fit better.  The hunt is on for a better storage box for me.

Haha, yeah, I already have been eyeing that link in my overflowing Xterra bookmark folder. :) The only thing stopping me from getting the action packer is like Jordan said, the 8 gallon version tapers in at the base, and it's not a complete deal breaker of course, but I'd like to make use of all the possible space in the rear of the X while out and about.
I had found this link a while back: http://www.runnings.com/storage-rolling-tool-boxes/runnings-30-tool-box.htm Two of them would exactly fit side by side in the back of the 1st Gen X and hold tons of stuff, about 22 gallons each, and could be easily stacked if needed, but almost 90 per box is really steep, not even including shipping. Also the Action Packers or similar should be easier to throw around compared to the metal corners of that box.

yeah, that is a really good point. I have camped with them twice now and used them in my for for a couple of months and wouldn't mind the bottoms being the same size as the top. I would be a buyer for something else as long as it could still be used to extend my bed. These are crucial to my car camping haha.

I do like the idea of the large metal containers and actually I tried something like sort of in that ball park the first week I had my X. My fiancé's dad and I threw something together pretty quick out of odds and ends in his garage that came out pretty well but was overall impractical for my needs/wants. I ended up pulling it and wanted to revisit it but ended up with the packers instead.

We mounted the box to a bit of plywood and wrapped that in carpet.

for mounting we used the eyebolts and spring nut (?) hoping to be able to make one crank and have it slide toward the tailgate for use, then slide back and lock down. using the eyebolts as extra anchor points for tie downs if needed.

finished product. overall liked the utility of the box but needed to be fine tuned. once I found the action packers could be used for sleeping in the x and storage I put this aside in the garage and haven't touched it since haha. If I ever get a roof rack maybe I could look into mounting it up there?
