I am looking for a good two way radio that I can use on future outings with the group, and when I do my border patrols. Something with a frequency range: 136-174 / 400-479.995 MHz, also I can use a ear bud with as well.

Looking for good places within San Diego to actually check these radios out. Thank you for your help.

Are you looking for HT or mobile mounted rig?  There are several ways you can go.  There are several members in the San Diego area that would probably be willing to help with your setup, once you get one.  If you want used, check out the CL sites in the SoCal areas, there is a ton of HAM gear on there, and people tend to treat HAM gear well, so it's usually in good condition.

Eventually I would like to do the rig mounted option but once I decide if I want to keep my 1st Gen, get a 2nd Gen or an FJ80... Choices!

Handhelds are a great start for not a lot of money.  Ham Radio Outlet in Claremont is a good place to check out setups and pick up parts.  I would recommend getting a mag mount antenna with an SMA or RP-SMA connector to help get better range out of the handheld while inside a vehicle.

Why not just remove the base station if you sell and put it into the new vehicle? This way you will have a much better and reliable setup and start getting experience with it.

What do you want your 4x4 to do? With an FJ 80 you gain a solid axle but lose hp and mpg (imagine that Gen 2 guys and gals, something with less hp than a Gen 1.) With a Gen 2 you gain comfort and hp but you're going to pay more to start from scratch and significant mods are tougher with the computer. (But there are a ton of people here to help) Your money for mods will go a lot further if you stick with what you have. Either way, you need to wheel with an SAS'd Gen 1 before you decide.

I concur on the Gen 2 mods vs electrical issues.

My .02...also consider aftermarket parts availability for serious off roading.

Gen 1 SAS stuff is more easily sourced by far.

FJ80's...well prolly second only to Jeeps in aftermarket, but finding one at a reasonable price is the challenge IMO.

I just like the added space of the FJ80, but your right finding one at a decent price is not easy. But finding a 2nd Gen that I want is not easy either.
