If I remember correctly, we made a decision that week to go through Jackass Canyon because of the lake bed being really bad.  Lake bed route is definitely better than the railroad, but I would take the railroad any day over dealing with getting stuck and dealing with 100lbs of mud.

You are 100% right about Jackass canyon, We will just have to evaluate it again this year. I'm really strongly leaning towards crossing the lake bed this year but we just have to be careful and keep an eye on the rain conditions. At least we have plenty of choices for some really great camping spots along the entire way. I was thinking about skipping Ft. Paiute this year unless someone really wants to go there as it can take a good amount of time out of the day getting there and back with the rough road.

There is a lot of other stuff out there to see rather than going back to Ft. Paiute.

This sure sounds like it will be a fun trip, I'm sorry I won't be able to join in.

By the way . . . with regard to Soda Lake, be sure to stay on the track, and take warnings about it being muddy seriously.

Disclaimer:  I did not take that photo.  I was not even there when it was taken.  I did not put that photo into the poster-thingy.  I would not even know how to do that.  I did lift it from a thread on the old XOC from many years ago, that one can find with a simple Google search using something like "XOC gone but not forgotten".  I suggest the third page of the thread for one of the funniest posts you'll ever read.  Far be it from me to be stirring up any really old sh!t, but I guess I just can't help myself sometimes, especially when people relatively new to the club start talking about Soda Lake.  Sorry in advance for the thread-jack.

HAHAHAHHAHAH, Epic adventure there Frank, thanks for posting this as it was some really good entertainment for me tonight!!  http://www.xterraownersclub.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=208682  This makes the Mojave Rd alcohol induced spazmatic binges of Fire Jenga seem very tame in comparison. We should all be very thankful of the guys we have here at SCCX..... I wonder if we should rename this "The SCCX Peyote Run"  ? ! ? ! ? ! ?...............

I'm not sure about the name change, but at least you'll want to be sure you don't "use a couple of baby seals and a spotted owl as sand ladders" while you're out on Soda Lake.

I've always been interested in history, and feel I should do what I can to help people remember things that might otherwise be forgotten.  Thanks to the internet, it's conveniently easy to do that.  Along that line, I've liked the motto of the old XOC (Xterra Owner's Club) website:  "All the information you need, and a lot you don't." It's a take-off on the original Nissan add for the Xterra.

I love how it has "For Sale" written on the rear window!

LOL that was the most epic writeup I've ever read!  If in deed the the person in question really went off like that, I would have lost it after the whole taking an axe to his tires, lol

If you are referring to the post by Sharahm on page 3 of that thread, there was a certain amount of what might be called "poetic license" in description.  Maybe a lot of poetic license.  That said, the real story was equally convoluted and crazy.

Oh no!  Spencer just played the 'Baby Photo" thread jack lol

Congrats, and yes, sub freezing temps would not be good for baby camping.

By the way Spencer, if you subscribe to the XtoolboX school of thought as to how old kids need to be to go on Xcursions it won't be long at all.
