I finally got it done.

I've had the stuff to do this for months and I have been actually working on it of a couple weeks.  Today I finally put it all together.

Looks good. I'm wondering, though, between the hi-lift and 2 cans of fuel, that looks to be a lot of weight on just one side.

Mitch is that steel or aluminum for the mounting? I made mine out of aluminum and it's light and has held up really well.

I'll be sitting on the other side to balance it out. ;)  I filled the gas cans this morning and so far I haven't noticed any ill effects.

It's 1/4" aluminum.  Its actually two pieces of scrap I got for almost nothing at the metal supply.  I'm really happy with how it came out.  Now we will see if it holds up to the test of time.

And Fred, last time I swung through EE they did have a bunch of cans; all types.

The high lift mount is made by Yakima.  If you would like some pictures of how it all mounts up I could get those for you.

Here they are.  I used pieces of 1/4" aluminum for the brackets.

That is brilliant! I see that there's some kind of cushioning in between the crossbars too. Definitely add this one to my "to-do" list.  Thanks for posting those pics.

I did the same thing for my fuel box but I ran the aluminum bars underneath all the way across the bottom and rested them on top of the stock roof rack bars. I put large bolts up though the ends to match a pair of holes in the Hi-Lift when I use to store it up there.
