Desperate for Help!! X needs help!!
« on: October 03, 2016, 10:52:51 AM »
I got a 2012 X automatic.
Had the battery replaced under warranty at 30k no issues
Now at 65k,  my poor X is failing. Last night my X left me stranded, wouldn't turn over at all. Lights/ radio on, alarm still good. Just wouldn't turn over, just click click. Had to get cables to jump-start it.

This morning it wouldn't turn over the first time, second try it struggled but turned over. Weird thing was all the needles were shaking at the bottom then eventually went up and back down to indicate as needed.
Besides that the check engine like came on.

Took it to get scanned got U0101 loss of communication with transmission module
I've looked all in the site for this and nothing and I check on TNX and the guy had 7000 worth of work on it and nothing to help. Anyone else have any idea what I could try.

I haven't touched any electrical, last mods where the suspension. For now the battery is disconnected see if that helps reset. Please this is my daily need her up and running, anyone have any ideas or want to take a look at her I'm open to it I'm in SD off for next 2days.

Do you have any type of corrosion around the positive battery terminal or anywhere in the general vicinity?  The OE batteries tend to vent right into the positive battery terminal.  I've seen a couple of cases on TNX where they didn't catch the corrosion early enough and it shorted out several of the control modules.

Bad battery, starter? Not sure. Just throwing ideas out there.

It's not that bad I disconnected the battery and cleaned the terminal. Had a but of acid build up.

I tested the alternator. Disconnected the battery and car still running. So doubt it's that. Starter IDK how to test that haven't checked spark plugs either.

To test starter, pull it out (kind of a pain in the butt) then take it to AutoZone to test for free. Did that like 4 months ago...ended up being just my battery. SMH.

My guess is that it's a bad battery again, but that's just a guess. It's not uncommon for OEM batteries to only last 2 years or so, especially if you're putting a lot of draw on the electrical system (aftermarket radio/amplifiers, lighting, etc). They typically start to show their age and problems right around this time of year, when it starts to get colder overnight and in the mornings when you try and start your vehicle. My Xterra had a brand new OEM battery when I purchased it as a "certified" used car with 33,000 miles. It lasted me a year (until about 45,000 miles), and I then swapped it out with an Interstate battery from Costco. I installed my second battery mod, which put a much harder strain on the charging system, and the Costco battery lasted me about 2 years. Costco gave me a full refund, since it had a 4 year warranty. I then purchased an Odyssey battery from 4 Wheel Parts and haven't had any issues since.

The weird code and issue with your gauges could have just come from the voltage dropping so low while the vehicle was trying to start. That can play all kinds of tricks on your computers and sensors. I've never heard of that specifically on an Xterra, but I have seen vehicles do weird things like this with just a bad battery. You said the battery was swapped out at 30k under warranty, but how many years ago was that? I'd highly recommend trying a better, aftermarket battery and seeing if that fixes the issues.

A bit under 2years. So I cleaned battery terminal had corrosion, disconnected the battery for few hours. Struggle to turn over but did so on first try. Checked all fuses to start up in glove box and nothing.

Not to question anyone's intelligence can the battery bring bad pop up that code for tcm? I would think it give some other code .
Other then that ima remove it and get it tested at auto zone.
Other then that no big lighting no light bars yet no winch so I really don't know.

I echo the battery fix/replacement.

Found this:

http://www.thenewx.org/forum/12-electrical/158466-help-ive-got-code-u0101-trasmission-control-unit.html

Xterra's can be a source of electrical gremlin chasing...but like Joe and Rick are suggesting, a bad battery can be the source of all issues...try starting there (pun intended).

Any recommendations on battery between optima vs Odyssey?
Would spark plugs make a difference? I know starter could have a big impact but first ima get battery tested.

Well everyone says battery. Ima go get it tested today as soon as I can get another car hahaha. Other then that people say new battery.
So Odyssey
Which one?
JFanaselle which are you running?
Jayrat has 31m-pc2150s running at $340 I have no intent for a fridge just a light car or 2.
Price is up and down steep on my wallet so trying to make this happen but not leave stranded with no gas now haha. 4wheel parts says 35-1400t which is $240

So any more suggestions on that

This is the one I'm running, and I got it from 4 Wheel Parts for the same price you quoted. The 31M that Jayrat is running has about 50% more capacity, but the 35 is a direct drop-in replacement (you don't have to extend the positive battery cable).

If you want a cheaper option, head over to Costco and pick up their battery. I'm pretty sure it's the "24F" size you need there, but they can look it up for you. They're branded as Interstate and manufactured by Johnson Controls. It won't have much more capacity than your current battery and will probably also die within a couple of years (our hot summers hurt our batteries really bad around here), but at least they give you a 48 month warranty so you can take it back and get another. If I remember correctly, it's right around $100 bucks.

Also...not sure where you're located, but American Batteries in Escondido has some quality units at decent prices.
