Last weekend my youngest and I started rebuilding the trailer we have had for nearly 30 years. I wanted to use Xterra rims and tires, but their bolt pattern is 6 on 4.5 in. Normal trailer axle pattern is 6 on 5.5 in., so I got adapters. After mounting the adapters and one wheel, we discovered that it moved the tire out too far and it locked into the fender. So we took the old drop-axle off and flipped it, re-drilling the spring indexing holes on the other side. This effectively raised the trailer up seven inches, giving us plenty of tire clearance. Of course, the 50+ year old bearings were totally shot. Much to my chagrin, those bearings are no longer available. So it was time for a new axle. Since I was upgrading, I went to 3500# spindles and electric brakes. I also went with a straight axle tube (2-inch square, 1/4 inch wall). We welded it all together today and got it all mounted. Next on the list is to install all new electrical. I am going with LED tail, turn, and backup lights, as well as side running lights.
