EVAP warranty - being extended by Nissan
« on: February 06, 2018, 11:39:16 AM »
Anyone else get an email from Nissan this morning? Apparently they are extending the warranty on the EVAP equipment to 15 years or 150,000 miles. For those unfamiliar, the EVAP canister is the big black box behind the driver's side rear plastic quarter panel, which is meant to trap gas fumes and helps with emissions. It is notorious for giving Xterra owners a hard time (including check engine lights and gas pumps shutting off before your tank is full), especially if you spend a lot of time driving in dusty/dirty environments like the desert.

According to the email, the extension is only being offered on the tube that connects the fuel tank and the EVAP canister. For what it's worth, in my limited research, it seems that most issues people experience with the EVAP system are related to this tube and a valve getting clogged, requiring that you pull it apart and clean it all out. Well now, you can leave that process to Nissan!  ;)

If you had an issue with your EVAP equipment already and paid out of pocket to have the tube replaced or repaired, Nissan also has a process to reimburse you for the expense. Visit NissanAssist.com for more details on that process.

I did get this email, too.  I think I might be experiencing this issue, but I'm not sure if it's caused by the pumps here on base, since it's done it a few times prior to the Mojave Road trip this year (and even right after I came to Cali) or if I do have clog in there because of the trip.  I need to fill up somewhere else to determine if it's actually the evap system, or not.  Either way, I think I'm going to get in there and blow the system out myself, I'm not sure if I want to give the dealer the opportunity to charge me a ton after they've determined my off-roading is what clogged the system.

I have check engine codes for the evap system and wonder if they would take care of the issue or like RikRong is worried, use it to find a way to charge me a bunch of money saying it was not the problem.

If it's anything other than a clogged hose, they'll probably charge you for at least part of it. But many times, it's a clogged hose.

Just tell them you live on a dirt road.

I don't actually have a light.  The last couple of times I've pumped, though, I've had to hold the handle at about 3/4, otherwise it would shut off.  This never happened at other stations, which is why I think it's isolated to the station on base, at least that's what I'm hoping.

I missed that warranty by 100k.  :-[

Mine started the same way, no lights.  Then one calm morning the dash lit up and the engine sputtered.  Then over the course of 4 weeks I replaced the canister and all of the sensors until finally the lite went away.  That only lasted a couple of weeks until the P0420 code hit. Thankfully I didn't have to smog the thing until November 17 and that's where the the next chapter began.  :'(  Some day I hope to have a clear dash.

My .02.  If your going to replace the evap canister (which is real easy).  Change all of the sensors at the same time so you don't have to keep pulling the dumb thing out.  It can be done without taking the side panel off, you'll only have to remove the fender liner.

I haven't received the email, but plan on taking mine in for the ACU recall (air bag) tomorrow. I'll ask them about the EVAP thing too.

I've been getting the P0448 code after a day or so on dirt. Unfortunately I don't think it has anything to do with the tube. I just it's just in need removal and a air compressor...

Yea I think there's alot of confusion about what this recall covers, it only covers the tube, and the tube is not really the issue, the issue is that dirt is getting into said tube because the system does not have proper filtration and pulls very dirty air from the frame rail.  The real fix here is to clean out the tube and solenoid with air and carb cleaner then extend the tube to behind the tail light with a cheap filter that can be replaced cheaply and easily.

I extended mine with a smaller diameter hose that fit into the breather that connects to the frame rail. Immediately got a code and wasn't able to pump more than a gallon before shutoff. So I went back to stock setup. How did you extend it?

Your problem might be that you used a smaller diameter tube, you need the flow of a larger tube.
