Seventeen Palms
« on: December 06, 2009, 08:26:35 AM »
Went out to hike to the palms from Truckhaven Truck Trail. Good thing we did not try that. Its a good 7 miles on the road the around about way. After we found the palms we went road driving and had a blast. Went down Inspiration Wash, we did not go all the way thru. Need to do that another time. Did we went and di some Geocaching.

This is the perfect time of year to wander that portion of Anza Borrego.  As you figured out, you can drive up to 17 Palms.  5 Palms is not that far of a walk from the next parking area down the trail a bit.  All of those washes are fun to explore. Short Wash has some nice stuff, and from there you can either go down Fault Wash (lots of cool rock formations) or over to the short trail that ends at Vista del Malpais. Short Wash to Font's Wash is a nice way to get across that area from east to west.

Keep an eye on the Xcursions Forum, I'll try to set up a trip to that area within the next month or so.

Or, if you're looking for company for a trip out just post up.

Thanks Frank,
What I want to do is follow Inspiration Wash and see where it comes out.

From what I can see on my maps it looks like it heads down towards the dump.  If Bruce (Strikedistance) is still around and sees this, I think he knows that area pretty well. He always told us that the dump area was not as bad as it sounds.

If you're looking for a way to get down into the badlands that you can see from Font's Point, you'll want to go up Rainbow Wash from Borrego Sink Wash (if coming from the west) or San Felipe Wash (if coming from the east).  Either way, Rainbow gets really narrow in places, and the ground just off the trail is a thin crust like surface over really soft stuff.
