Keeping tabs on this one as I'd be taking the bike up out there if I pull the trigger. 

Never been out there, but are the trails do-able for a relative newb on a midweight moto? Any areas of contention (ie deep sand, rock gardens etc)?

I watch a video of a lifted Honda passport and stock Ridge line make the trip (ridgeline not so much)LOL

I really haven't been on this site since Covid.  Steve C brought this up to me and I am a maybe.  I should know more in a couple of days.  I have done Coyote Flats a few times and have covered pretty much every road up there.  I am not a big fan of the two roads to Funnel Lake, it worse than driving through a rock quarry, Steve can confirm.   I have stayed many times at the hunting cabin on Baker Creek and its a great spot as well as down the way on the creek.  I also enjoyed staying on the shores of Coyote Lake.  The spot mapped out for an overnight is not a bad spot as well.  there is room around that little lake for a couple of groups.  Is this an overlander style trip with a different camp each night?

Jeff - I am taking my trailer, so I don't want to make multiple moves.  I was expecting to go in, find an agreeable spot for base camp, then people can explore the area or sit and enjoy a beverage with friends.  Low stress get-away.

S³ - It is Eastern Sierra Jeep Trails by Roger Mitchell, La Siesta Press, 1983.  I picked it up at a Dick Cepek store in El Cajon in 1985 for $1.50 (list price).  Or a used one is available on Amazon for $17.50 (1971 edition):

Can confirm Funnel Lake roads are not awesome.  Definitely could be a fun wheeling day adventure for folks that want to do that kind of thing.
Coyote Lake is awesome.
Hunting cabin on Baker Creek is awesome.

100% confirmed, not taking the "shortcut" out to Big Pine.

Hey Richard,

               What are you riding? Has a follow rider and just coming off that trail on the X. A dual sport is doable with a capable rider. IMHO I would not attempt with an adventure bike. Largest bike for me would be a 450/500 dual sport. No KLR are anything near that kind of weight. There are rock gardens with smaller sized rocks.

Well noted. I'm on a fat Honda CB500X.  I figured in certain sections it could be difficult, but its looking no bueno for me for this trip anyways.

Curious on the post trip report on the trail conditions for future plans though.
